All good man. I had to stretch the vinyl alot to get it bend the way it did which gave it tiny creases at the edges, so im gonna trim the edge off and do that as a seperate piece, which will make it much tidier.

umm, i haven't looked at the door handles that close yet. I presume they come apart and ill just wrap each bit then reconstruct it. Im hoping the hatch was the hardest.

A couple of questions, not really related to the subject...

    In this photo:

What is the round bit on the corner (where you rubbed back to white)? Is that a piece that slots in?

Also, regarding the inside of the mirrors, did you clean the contacts after painting?

In the first photo, where you rubbed back to white, there appears to be a seam around that area. It looked to me like there was a plug (or similar), and the middle of it was rubbed back.

Just my point of view - happy to be proven wrong.

And what I meant about contacts was the 6 gold coloured "things" (in pairs) arranged around the centre of the mirror back.

Again, happy to be proven wrong. :)

    :) always open to comment

I expect to be wrong more often than right :br:

and that "seam" you can see is just the spray over the spray levels that i rubbed back. looks kinda cool.

    Mirror - Passenger side

    Mini update:

All these things im discovering about wrapping in general, the material, curves, stretching, heating. These mirrors, especially this one was another learning curve. This pic shows how you would stretch a flat section of vinyl of a curved surface. The problem is that it bunches up where the lines are making huge creases so i have to heat and stretch it out....if you over stretch it it will loose its adhesiveness(which happened). I think next time i will do it long ways.

Pic of what im trying to explain:

So here is the finished product.

I'm interested in covering a few engine bay components in carbon fiber wrap - more specifically, the timing belt cover and fan shroud - as another pre-purchase mod for the TT (something for me to do in my spare time :)). These are both heavily contoured all over... any tips?

    Yep, well....

    initial thoughts:

you have to consider heat, the vinyl has a memory and will shrink back to original shape unless post heated at over 90 degrees (so im told). Many contours dont matter, it might even make it easier doing little bits at a time.

As for the fan shroud those little sticky uppy bits will be dicky im not sure how it would turn out or how hard it would be.

Thats all i can really think of that would be an issue..heat. Im post heating mine to 80 or so i think hoping that a hot summers day wont do anything to it. Although its not the end of the world if it does. I plan on re doing a few pieces anyway once i get really good.

    cheers,
    matt

would spraying clear coats and stuff over it help protect it?

You can get clear laminate to go over the vinyl but its not heat resistant and its used for protecting inks when you print graphics onto the vinyl. I don't think they would have a heat resistant coating as there's no real use for it, though i may be wrong.

Hmm... I was hoping since they're just covers that they wouldn't get too hot, but I'm not sure. I'll put up a thread asking when I'm closer to the project.

What do I need? Wrap, scalpel and a hair dryer?

Maybe after you have had a long drive just see how warm certain parts get. anything under 30 or 40 should be alright.

As for carbon fiber vinyl. im only familiar with 3m products and im fairly sure they dont sell it in australia.

this site has alot of info and ideas as well as a few lambo wraps :D

Im using a scalpel type knife, masking tape, hair dryer, felt and plastic squeegee and a lamp(lol).

Just take a bit of time to cut off all the little sticky uppy bits and smooth out the shroud
It shouldn't weaken the shroud much, not like it's a structural piece anyway. Looks better too.

I'm not sure about the legalities of tinted tail lights here in Australia but if you want to do any of this stuff I'm more than happy to come round since your just up the road :)

The black roof look is nice, i have enough off cuts to do a few i think if anyone is interested. Its a lot of hours work though to get it perfect.

This piece and the front would take me about an hour or so + trimming

Yeah probably not legal but I can always take it straight off :) ..... I forgot about the targa roof, that would be perfect for a dark tint :)

I'll order some dark tint for the rear lights today :D I'll pick the middle tint, don't want it too dark

matt's right, you cant get he 3M vinyl wrap in VIC, however!

my mate has rolls upon rolls of it here in vic, (CARBON FIBRE - check my build thread, to see my dash etc done in it) so if you need prices, let me know!
so easy to use, heat, stretch and wait.

however, as matt has found, curves and corners are hard to do, only way to beat it, is patience and time, using primer also really helps as it sticks alot better. but its all practice makes perfect.

anyone looking for 3M carbon, hit me up with a PM and i'll forward the details :)

edit: i tried to wrap things in my bay (old intake pipes, fan shroud -was shaved etc) it just comes off and can cause a hazard if it gets caught on things.
