if the cost of maintenance is not that much, i think people would like to pay more for a zed.

    agree in theory.

The problem is that its ALWAYS a gamble. Speaking from experience, paying more does not mean that gamble is reduced.

Thus, often paying less is the more economically sound option, unless you are 100% sure the last owner is trust worthy, has done EVERYTHING right, and knows, and has told you EVERYTHING there is to know.

That kind of guarantee simply doesn't exist.

I've thought a little bit about this the last few days. I've spent over $7000 on my Zed in the year and a half I've owned it and I bought it for just under $12,000. However, it's probably worth maybe $6 - 7k at the end of it all and by looking at the car, the only contribution it looks like i've made is some clear indicators on the sides.

All of my money has gone to repairing and replacing items on an almost stock Zed...and I can still see me spending thousands more, without even buying the big ticket stuff. Mods, jspec front, wheels, etc ect..

The problem is....why should I, when it might be cheaper to pull apart another? If I can find one for $5 - 8k, wouldn't it make more sense? I'll easily spend at least another $10k before I'm happy with the way she looks and drives, but I'll still need to spend more ....when realistically I could find another Zed that's already at that point for less.

hope i dont get flamed for this but here are a few reasons zeds are cheap:

    1. they are not cheap, check other cars of similar value back in the days and there prices today, check out a supra turbo making 300rwkw for around 18 gran or a r32 GTR low 10gran mark....also you will find people prefer a 4 banger turbo....i sold my SSS turbo 1993 for around 7 gran.....a 25 gran car brand new, go figure...

    2. People including myself want a car that is newer, no hassels, feels nicer, smoother........believe me many people on here say " everyone thinks the zed is unreliable, thats coz they never service it".....id have to disagree with that, they do service it, however they service it as if they are servicing their corolla or honda etc....all in all the zed is a very high maintainence car, like others in its league such as other top end cars.....

    Flamed ?

I was given a pair of asbestos undies when I joined this forum. Haven't needed them yet but that could change shortly. Wanna borrow them ?
    NO skidmarks, never been worn.

You made some valid points & some contestable ones.

    totally agree.

What people fail to realize is the car was completing with VERY high end cars.

    Vettes
    Ferrari 348
    Porsche

Compared to even just those 3, it is a SINCH to maintain and keep running.
in that respect (as in, when looked at in the right context) it's a VERY reliable "SPORTS car". (sports cars being generally un-reliable)

However.... because of it's price it's purchased as a daily. Something very few of the 3 examples above would EVER be.

Against another choice of daily, the Zed becomes a horrible car to keep and maintain.

    but that's the point.
She never was meant to be a happy shopper.
Dont let the boot space fool you.

ibbi do those cars come with rwc? a legit one? Cause if i was to buy a car, i dont want a dodgy rwc cert. Id want the seller to take the car for a rwc at one of my chosen mechanics.

People can sell their car with a dodgy rwc cert all the time. A smart buyer will get the seller to get a rwc cert at a choice of his own mechanic.

What's with you and RWC's? All they are is to show that bushes are in good nick, wipers work, lights work, brakes work, no oil leaks, nothing falling off and there is enough tread on the tyres. RWC's aren't worth the paper they are written on IMO, up here you need one to advertise a registered car. Buyer beware regardless of what is being bought.

A smart buyer will have a mechanical inspection done at a workshop of his choice, not a RWC

I think prices will stabilize at about 6-10k for a good one. The shit ones will practically go for free, but thats all there worth. with the amount of wrecks these days.

Ya RWC only say the lights and brake's work. Thats it.

I agree with some of what you've said but i still dont think that high end zeds should still suffer. Supras and GTR's realistically will cost similar to own, a 32gtr could probablu be worse.

the honeymoon period of low kay late 80's and early 90's cars is over well and truely. no 32GTR has 56'000 kays like u used to see . so where alot of people could buy them and just drive them for a year with no repair work, that just cant be done anymore.

But all this does in my opinion is help highlight the truely great cars. I think a R32GTR with a rebuilt motor or a R33 motor, mechanically spot on with great paint and interior should be worth 20k. If i was in the market for one i would want the best available regardless of the price.

In comparison to other cars and just in general. 15k is chicken shit money so is 20. If some goose cant see the benefit of spending an etra 5k on a car that has had 20k spent then he deserves the cheaper one

    agreed.

    Another thought I had today.....

The 20 year old TT manual Zed is probably worth around $10K for av condition (not a shit box, but nothing special).

My wifes mint condition, well maintained and loved 2002 AU Falcon, we purchased for just over $8K for a 7 year old car.

Look at the depreciation of the regular family shopping trolley and the Zed's price has held up well for a very very long time.

Then again, we brought NISSANS not FERRARI's. Anyone expecting a return or investment is deluded.

Yeah a $28 "safety inspection" isn't going to make or break a car for me...

Are you guys serious about the RWC thing? I dunno about your states but in vic it is a big thing.

I spent OVER $3000 to get my daily drive roadworthy (my fault for buying without a RWC).
The RWC included things like new suspension, brake pads, fixing a radiator leak, new windscreen, wiper blades, brake pedal, tyres etc.

yeah we know whats involved. The point is that a car worth 15k should have all those items in good condition anyway

when buying any car you would get a serious mechanical check done by your mechanic.... this will cover the rwc items and a hell of a lot more...

its wayyyyyy to easy to get dodgy roadies for you to trust them on their own

As someone who hung out for a 4 seater... DON'T BOTHER!

Sure the seats are excellent Targa storage space

    ...but

They are too small for adults

And kids (well my kids) don't like being in the Zed coz once in the back, you cant see shit!

My kids LOVED the 180sx. They still, to this day, HATE the 300ZX.

So trust me, don't make 4 seats a "must have" on your zed list.

if you find a good manual TT with 4 seats... bonus. But what I'm saying is, don't miss out on a good 2 seater if that comes up first.

REALLY..... trust me on this. I swore blind i NEEDED a 4 seater.

I could quite happily do without.

Agree with ugame, most of the time I just didn't like the back seats. Waste of space really. The 2+0 feels so much more snug and 'fitting' for a sports car. I wouldn't go back.

My daily drive is a 2-seater MR2 and I'm sick of it.
Many times I have done the stupid act of squeezing 4 people into my car and I know I will be tempted again if I had a 2-seater zed.
The seats don't have to be big or comfortable, I just need to be able to legally and safely carry 4 people.
    That's my reason for a 2+2.
