Not sure how much of a mech. head you are but just thought I'd check. In your 5th pic your holding a wheel with a directional tyre. If those are the stock rims and the wheels are on the wrong side of the car but you have the arrow facing the right direction, you'll need to remove the tyres from the rims and change them. But you may already know this just thought I'd check. Also the wheels have L and R cast into them so there is no excuse for a tyre shop to put them on the wrong side.

PS beautiful car :zlove: I wish my old z had paint that perfect. I say keep it stock looking and you'll keep the value, look after it well, I'm sure you will. Happy zedding.

If you look closely at the rims they will have L and R on them.

Don't forget to add a plenum pull and possibly 200k service to that list along with a/t gearbox service and change the diff oil (probably never been changed before).

Yup, a plenum pull and tranny service are also on the list.
Also for those of you who wanted an engine bay shot :D

Hrm, interesting tps you've got there, maybe someone can clarify whether that's a later revision that nissan went to in 97?

Why's it interesting? Whats different about it?
Also, went over to Eddie's (Tony321) place last night, and we did a Conzult and compression test.
The Conzult came up clear (however not all of conzult was working properly, he said because it was a 1997), but the compression is down in Cyl 1 :(
He said it might be a sticky valve, and after I get the service done we will test again.

    cylinder 1....

how low is cylinder 1??? Ideally you would want somewhere in the 155-175 psi range..... How many times did he test cylinder 1??

yeah tested about 3-4 times got very low comp about 100. Oil in the cylidner didn't help so hoping its just a siezed lifter as apparently oil has not been changed for ever. All other cyls came back strong

    damn....

it'll be a pain if it remains at 100..:( I would suspect that the engine would still drive fine, but eventually the engine would have to be stripped down to repair the low comp.....

If it still remains the same at 100, even after the service, what would the cause be?

the usual, worn rings, detonation causing damge, starved severely of fuel at some stage, worn valves, bent valves, badly misaligned camshaft, timing belt installed incorrectly, all the same things that can happen to the older ones can still happen to yours, just less likely coz your cars so much younger

    yep...

    basically what jinxed said....

If it does remain at 100, unfortunately your options are to either just live with it
and drive the car around until that cylinder eventually dies. If its the rings, you may find that you may consume your oil between services..

The other option is an engine rebuild. For an NA motor, for decent rebuild, you'd be looking at somewhere between the 5-7k mark...

or you could just buy a 2nd hand motor and drop that in..... but then, you have no guarantee that that motor is any good.....

This pretty much covers it I think, as long as it drives reasonably well and does not go through too much oil (using a slightly thicker oil may help here) I'd go with the 'live with it' option I think.

You could get a leak-down test done to find out exactly what's up if you wanted to.

Well the guy I got it off said he hadn't had it serviced in 2+ years, and I just checked the oil and it's pretty much completely full.

How hard is a leak down test? What does it involve? Cost?

    yeah but....

    ok a few explainations....

Even though he didnt service it for 2 years (which is not good), if it was using oil, he could simply be topping it up every few months.

Also, the low compression can be caused by a valve not seating properley. Hopefully only a lifter issue. But if its more sinister than that, then its still anengine out job. Or at the very least, off with the heads. And while heads can be removed while the engine is in the car, its much easier just to take the engine out....

A leak down test is basically when air is forced into the cylinder, and then the rate at which it leaks out is measured... the faster it leaks out, the more wear and tear and lower compression.... if its leaking from the valves, say the exhaust valves, you can hear the air escaping through the exhaust....

Give the car a service and see how you go. Maybe just a sticky lifter.

    Cheers

Yup there were 3 types or models. The standard 89-93 then i think there was a newer model from 93-95 and then 95 onwards. Wish i had that one on my 89.
