MY aircon was disconnected at firewall , then a matter of 1x screw top of unit and 2x below . It should come away with the unbolted heater box .

How did you get it off the firewall? I've found 1 nut on top and 1 on the bottom right.

Did you undo the aircon piping in the engine bay ? Now if you havent you need to decide if thats a good idea as this will stop your aircon working . Mine was already disconnected so it was an easy option for me .

You don't need to take it out of the car, you just need to unscrew a few tiny screws that hold the Drivers side end cover on to the Core casing, remove the core, then replace with a new core, and reassemble the whole shebang.

Ok now this is the tricky bit . If your aircon uses the old R12 gas then you may have trouble just getting it regassed . Some people on here say that there is an R12 replacement . But as far as I know you have to replace the gas and the Refrigerant lubricant . I have heard others leaving the orings in and still worked with the rplacement gas , but protocol for change of gas is :

Change : Orings , Refrigerant Lubricant , Reciever/Drier and then lastly regas fittings to suit the new gas .

So you may want to get more advice on this one . For me it was straight forward as I had my engine out and had to replace half the system anyway so I upgrade to the R134 gas .

Your right its easier to do with the heater box out but you need to weigh up the drama of rebuilding your aircon system .

I'll probly replace the tape while I'm at it. I've got a feeling it might be ****ed. Do I need to undo a bolt by reaching thru the fire wall to get the core out? Where is it?

How do I find out what gas mine is? And my air con may need to be regased anyway cause it was never that cold. So I'm thinking ether my ac needs gas or my heater tap has been stuck in the open position. During the summer it was a must to take my roof off

The heater core has a black plastic retainer on the side . Unscrew it .
You need to disconnect the cable that runsacross it and to the heater tap .
But before you do all this you have to take the black plastic cover that covers the heater pipes .
Also the black climate control computer I think it is also has to be remove before you can get to the core .

If the AC looks old and has the small black nozzle covers on the two AC pipes that run across the passenger strut tower and along the rail , then chances are its the old gas . Covers are about the size of wheel tyre nozzle caps .

BTW , my heater tap was stuck open due to butterfly inside rusting away from the arm . So yeah will be hot all the time :)

in the firewall there is a rubber grommet that holds the two heater pipes . There is no resitance here it should just pull through .

The AC on the otherhand has a screw that secures a plate that holds the rubber grommet around the pipes . Needs to be removed so the pipes can go thru firewall .
They have big nuts on the end of pipes so be carefull not to get them cought on the firewall .

Just take your time . its not a quick fix . Heater tap takes almost 3 weeks to come from Japan once you order at your Nissan dealer .
So you wont be going anywhere soon .

Enjoy getting to know your car mate .... after all its a Z :zlove:

So no bolt with the heater core?

Heater core just sits in there with a black retainer . I think there is another one around the back which scres the pipes together and on to the body of heater box .

Did you buy it to do up tho? I thought I was buying a mint one but turned out not to be

Ahh yes , the quest to find a mint Z . The idea of a 20 year old car being mint just doesnt seem to jell with me . Yes mint body/painjob , interior , but thats about as far as I would take that term . Unless you know the history of the car like maybe buying one of a member here that has had well documented build and restoration then you always will be unsure of its history .

I bought mine cheap but it had a solid motor and a straight body and thats about it . I knew I had to get in there and get dirty , the only way you will know things are done properly . Was always going to start from one end and work my way back . This way I enjoy restoring my own car but also know whats been done to it .

BTW , things like heater cores and taps do NOT last 20 years and remain mint so things like this will always have to be replaced .
