I have come to the conclusion that the vinyl in the US kit is crap Mine lasted about 3 months before it lifted. I did some with 3M 77 and some with glue from the upholsterers. It ALL lifted. I spoke to the motor trimmer about this. He said that any vinyl that doesnt have a cotton backing ( the US vinyl is Nylon) will never stick properly. My job straight after i did it looked great. I had no creases and spent a lot of time doing it. What a waste!! It looked crap in 3 months. Now here we are 12 months later. I had to pull the lot off and have almost recovered it with padded GM velour in grey. The fabric with backing was 50 times easier to use. It followed the curves with almost no effort. Now I have a nicely upholtered interior that I know will not lift. It is Really stuck this time. Dont get sucked in use proper car materials and dont redo this later like I had to.
PM evz, he has a professionally retrimed interior and its worth every penny brad/dub's is also very good.
Im having the seats and trim done on the 27th i'll post pics here when done I'm a bit worried now cause i also have the US kit being installed, should I abandon it? Just get the seats done? and wait for the trim to do it in better material?
Did you paint the top half of the doors and dash or does it just look darker because the bottom half is lighter? I've been thinking about painting mine, or vinyl dye - whatever it is, VHT have a few colours. Wondering how well it lasts.
Quick question... anyone thought of using upholsters staples ??? Why people still insist on glue when you will never even see the underside, i have no idea ? I have seen metal pieces sag in cars from been left out all day, and people think glue is a good idea ??? Glue is an interior porduct BUT you are sticking your cars out in the elements so interior really becomes an indirect exterior... not that bright if you ask me When we did my mates car we got some of our chick friends involved, (always get chicks to help when it comes to material and fashion etc) ANYWAY just happens we got a fashion guru (works for Design Fashion) and she went to the "bloke'y" part of their company (do a whole bunch of stuff including top range womens fashion) anyway long story short she grabbed the boys leather stappler YOU never seen the underside so who cares what it looks like ??? The leather hasn't even thought about lifting and that was at least 4 years ago ??? I say.... Stapples ??? Or any other form of pinning that doesn't rely on just one product to do its job. Pin it down... now the leather, the stapple and the bit you stuck it to have to stuff up for it to come undone that way no need to complain about cotton backing or BS slippery backing or any other backing crap The vinly is one point, the "attacher" is one point, and the thing your attaching to is one point When you use glue you are relying on only the ONE point to work... IE use something that makes use of more then one point... like rock climbing, you have 4 points of contact at basic rock climbing is never use less the 3 points and you'll be fine ??? Same goes here... using glue IMO is like trying to rock climb using only your left hand ????
Re: Quick question... anyone thought of using upholsters staples ??? Im with Graham im going to do my interior in some other material other than vinyl...it just wont hold.. By the way AADOOR i used 90 adhesive glue (higher strength than Grahams) and i also did some stapleing around the bottoms...but that didn't help it still lifted, and i dont see how its possible to staple all sections without getting the staples to show...
Thanks for the help guys. Lucky my dad told me not to get that interior magic stuff. i really wanted it at start of year and dads like dont waste money and its not going to look professional. Guess its good i didnt get it but i still want to get it but not from interior magic. I dont mind the vinyl but yeh ill be after the cotton backing then. Does anyone know where i can get the material and where it can be done at a good price in nsw. I dont mind going anywhere between sydney and newcastle. How much would i be looking at for just the trim like interior magic and how much additional for the seats. there a lil cracked. btw whats the best material you guys recommend which is good in all ways, i cant afford to spend a fortune on this so whats good for me....cheers. thanks for the pics renzed.
Sweet..... More work involved BUT For areas where a staple would show we used pieces of elastic... same stuff people used to make garters for school uniforms and keeping socks up etc Anyway, we used those and sticked them or stappled them to the piece we needed to hold, and then really stretched it up to the top of the other end and attached it to that side. Don't know if that makes sense ? Basically we made sure their was little extra material on the end that would show and used a piece of material to hook it up to the other end .... i guess sort of like those things you can get for your bed sheets to keep them attached to each end under the mattress ??? see if that helps... haven't done a 300zx interior so i ain't that good a help, but some of the techniques i saw been used impressed me, so maybe some of it comes down to skill and technique and doing it for a living etc ??? Will try to see if there are other ways again to combat glue peel...
Here is the red vinyl shit almost gone Only the doors left but cant get any more grey velour till Jan.
Re: Here is the red vinyl shit almost gone man graham that looks great!!!...looks professional ...Is velour a lot easier to work with, like have you come across any hard to do areas??
Re: Here is the red vinyl shit almost gone Its 10 times easier to fit than the vinyl. The hardest bit of what I have done is the weird bent bit behind the centre arm rest. Stretching in the T shaped sides was a bit hard. But easier than the vinyl. The velour is foam backed and is about 3MM thick behind the velour. and it sticks so well i know it wont come off. The glue came from the upholsterer as well was $10 per litre. The velour was $35 a meter. I did all you can see with 1.5 metres. I will probably need another 1.5 for the doors cause of the length. I am pretty pleased though. Looks like a 96 model now. The grey is GM Iron Bark out of a Commodore. Its nearly ready to sell now come January.
do it right the first time :- heres some photos of mine, people look at it in photos and say what the? but when you see it for real people like it(wether or not they just say that as i'm a big guy and there scared? i dunno). and yes, it's shag baby yeah!!
