wow looks schmick. few quick questions. for the boot what kind of taping did you do? remove the rubber seal around the rear windscreen? and tape along there? or just tape over the windscreen right at the edge of the rubber seal? also a bit on terminology here i dont understand. plus method im trying to get down in my head concrete. so you primed it, sanded it down smooth with 400 and 800. then cleaned it with prepsol or whatever. then colour coats (how many? as many as you want? until it looks good?) leave it 2 weeks, then spray on some clear coats. one after the other without sanding inbetween? only sand the top clear coat with 2000? also, what do cutting and buffing mean. always wondered what exactly a cut and polish is that they offer around the place. once i understand these terms, i figure ill know what is meant by cutting and buffind the clearcoat after its on. thanks for all the info! just gathering the last few bits im not sure about. ill be using acrylic in the tent too so pretty much following your process.
yeah sand the primer with 400 then 800 till when u look at it from an angle its like glass. The better u sand the primer and the car originally the better the paint will look. Do about 6 coats of paint then unMask the car and let dry for 2 weeks. Then prepsol, and spray clear strait over it about 7 coats of clear. unmask car again and let dry 2 weeks then get a detailer to cut and polish.
out of interest why would you leave it for 2 weeks before clearing? its not like its cement and it needs weeks to cure.....
If your not bakeing (spray booth) it will need to sit a while, the clear is still soft... I sprayed a car (backyard job) over a month ago and I know the clear is still soft.. It can be cut etc etc but only the best things take time...I know some hot rod builders wait 2 months before wet sanding... But those are the Really big boys...
he hast shot clear, just base which dries much quicker, and 2pak is fully hardened in 2 days max with no booth if the correct amount of hardener is used. Acrylic is a different story but are people still painting hot rods in acrylic"?
i thought it was urethane.... urethane single stage with urethane clear is pretty rich for your solid colours.
I thought when it was yellow undercoat it was the same as mine two stage pearl yellow, but then you painted it blue, yellow is great sticks out like dogs balls but gets plenty of lookers though matt
update... while the paint iv sprayed is drying iv decided to paint my calipers and a few things in the engine bay this weekend...make it look more blue
cheers man, missin driving it real bad ey. hopefully spray clear next weekend if it dosnt rain and temp stays above 25 deg
update..... sprayed clear coat today. finally the spraying is over with, bloody fumes get ya everytime. took a quick snap of what zed looks like at the moment. front bar and nose pannel are just hanging there. still need to put it back together, sand the clear down in a week then get it buffed by Brock32 hopefully day before cruize on 26th. still looks better in person i reckon
update... iv left the clear coat drying for the last week. got a big weekend of sanding ahead...and alot of red bull drinkin. plan is to sand the whole car with 1200 grit by sunday. then get it buffed and detailed by Brock32 on the 26th. il keep postin pics as i go.
update... ok so had a big weekend of sanding once again and got the clear all sanded down. practiced a bit of hand buffing on top lhs of the rear bar. now you can see that color starting to come through. Brock's coming over this Saturday morning to finally finish her off!! I was going to wack on all my new exterior seals but they showed up from coz bent to shit by the couriers which was a bitch. Coz has been great as always however and they sent me a whole new set of seals the same day i complained about the conditions of the ones i receaved. Here are some pics of the paint and ...and some of the damaged seals dented seals
