Hold it....lets not get carried away now!

In my 22 years of being a mechanic, including some crazy days at Trade School involving a certain LJ Torana with a 327(yes I did drive a V8 once) Chev, some sticky Micky Thompsons and a smart arse in a 2.5 Turbo Alfa I have never seen an Auto beat a manual in a street drag!

Maybe the Australian way where Hugos Race matics and tricked up power glides seem to rule but certainly not in Japan where most if not all the RH9 club cars run manuals. :zlove:

I distroyed 3 gearboxes, 2 tailshafts and a R200 diff in my Skyline 2000GT because I would do 6500RPM flat changes. Granted not many people will drive their pride and joy like that but there is no way an auto should beat a manual in a drag race!:D :D

I don't know, I'm pretty happy with my 12.6sec from 210 rwkw, in a supposed heavy car

What about technically? As I understand it, if you took two identical cars, fitted one with an auto and one with a manual, wouldn't the auto hold RPM up high and also not loose boost? This should give it the edge to win? Plus, especially if you have a transbrake, you're going to cane on the launches if you're any good.

What other factors are involved? Ignore drivers skill of course, pretend same driver.

That took about 27 seconds too long!!!

You must be slipping.....I thought you would react much quicker than that!!!:D :D :D

Sorry to burst your bubble but currently the world's fastest RH9 car is an Evo 8 with a 5 speed trans, street tyres and Exedy triple clutch. NO sign of an auto at all! .....even with 900whp!:)

    Best 1/4 Mile pass - 9.50 @ 148MPH

    Fastest 1/4 mile 156.9MPH

    Best 60 ' 1.48

Like in Japan....it's all about how fast you're going at the end of the quarter. This guy is well over the 200KPH and pushing 250KPH at times!

    Update and pictures.....!

To date, 7-1-07 car has ran a best pass so far is of 8.95sec and a best MPH of 165.6. The best 60' time put down to date is 1.43. This was the worlds first Evolution to break the 8 sec barrier in drag racing.

I think what they're saying is that for the normal everyday driver, auto's will allow for quicker times.

yeah thats what i also thought true as well!!

wouldnt you loose boost during gear change? i mean u havta take your foot off the pedal to change gears right and whenever you put your foot down the turbos go through the whole process again of spool up n etc

but in autos your in boost all the time during gear changes

edit: which is why i think bovs are useless in auto cars, cos u can never get a proper PSSHHHHH sound lol

    We tried this ourselves.

It was back in 1989 and we had two VL Commodores in the workshop. Both Executives.....one an auto and one a manual. Both were in for major services which included full injector clean, throttle body clean, EGR check / replace etc so when we finished both cars were on par.

We then took both out to a quiet stretch of road and gave them a run because at that time i too believed an auto was better for "everyday driving"

The Manual beat me by about 3 car lengths over about a kilometre! :(

    hmm interesting!!

but wouldnt that like really damage your clutch/gears??

I would think that slamming your clutch in at 5k RPM (I'm sure in the time it takes to change it would get at least there) cannot be good for it.

As soon as you do the valve body modification to the autobox, you win 0.5 seconds from your 1/4 mile time.
My gear changes are instant and hard, but not so hard that I get any more than a chirp from the rear wheels when I hit 2nd gear. That's what I asked for when I have the modification done, after all, wheel spin = lost traction = slower car. Flat changing a manual in a 2wd can only result in a slower time.

Now I will bring up member fleet, and before I go into detail, fleet's car is a track car and is set up for such, however, 437 rwkw - 5 speed manual 12.5 sec 1/4 mile. Mine 210 rwkw auto 12.6 second 1/4mile.
So I guess too, in a manual you have to have the skillZ that come with plenty of 1/4 mile practise, whereas an auto it's pretty much foot to the floor, with some skills required to get the car off the line.

    and this quote is untrue.
I can assure you i can PSSHHHH with the best of you boys and girls

    thats very interesting figures greg

as for the above is this because you have the shift a will kit installed or are you talking about normal driving, without the use of the SAW??

PSHHHH...you just take your foot off the accelerator which closes the throttle bodies and sets off the BOV. Same as a manual. The difference is, we can change gears without setting off the BOV if we want to.

I don't have shift at will, I am referring to a valve body modification, which increases line pressure, hardening and quickening the gear changes.
You get used to when the car will change gear, and if you ease off the throttle a little you can create the BOV noise should you desire it, of just keep the gas on if you don't want it.
Any time you are on boost, if you remove your foot from the go pedal, the BOVs will sound, manual or auto (assuming you have BOVs that is ;))

Yep, though it's better not to back off. If you don't set off the BOV's you won't run rich through losing that measured air, you won't slow down the turbos and you won't drop revs.
