I got the a carbon clean by Tom at PZP yesterday and I have to say I am staggered with the results.

I expected to get a few KW improvement, something less than 5 though I assumed there would be other benefits to a clean engine such as improved idle etc.

Well, first the car does feel smoother, especially low down which is great for 99% of the driving I do.

And as for the other 1%, well the peak power increase was what really impressed me. I started with a baseline run of 172kW and after the carbon clean I got 183.5kW. Also the boost looks like it held a little better in mid range, though that might not be related. But, where the peak power increase occurs the boost is identical on both runs, so I can only assume there was alot of crap in there causing valve sticking, maybe clogged injectors and who knows what else. I highly recommend you consider this if you haven't had your motor cleaned. Ignoring the power gains, carbon build up can cause ping and other issues which are not fun.

"Loss" of power at the start is just the gears starting up I assume, as once boost hit the crossover in power happens. Anyway, here's the dyno with the before and after runs.:

nice. so that was your beast i saw :D

I want to echo, my car feels HEAPS smoother low down. Feels like ive got more power PRE boost (if that makes sense) than i had before.

    Car just feels more responsive.

Also, when I gave it shit on the way to work this morning, I didn't "ink" the person behind me. That may be related or may just be because I cleared the gunk when I inked a lantre yesterday morning LOL.

Would PZP know anyone in QLD who does this? How much was it?

For ugame and I it was free, as he was trying to decide whether to buy the machine. But after seeing the large power gain he bought one. I imagine he'll post up pricing soon. He's using a machine made by a company called Fortron I think, so maybe find out their distributors over there?

wtf thats a big increase . so this was a straight back to back dyno run and test? nothing changed etc except the carbon clean ??? dam thats an excellent result

interesting - i think i'll definitely be taking tom up on the service when i get my motor in.

Yep. Tom said he did nothing else except the carbon clean. Shocked me too. That's why I definitely recommend doing this. Remember it also cleans your injectors etc. at the same time.

Yep, that was my baby. Still a long way to go though. I'm trying to focus on a few fixes before I put more $$$ into power. For example, the suspensions creaks like a bitch, a lifters ticking and I have that fuel smell in the mornings haha, so once I get that fixed then g on the RWKW lol.

dyno runs with a potential fuel leak ?

meh, im sure Toms handy with a bucket of water too :D

Interesting to see we're both putting out simular numbers.

Ill post mine up in this thread too tonight to save creating a new one if thats ok.

I note your boost comes on quicker than mine indicating i do have a leak somewhere

and if thats the case... what will my numbers do when i get leak fixed?

......or ill guess it just means ill make power faster.

    AHHH hang on

all that gain could simply be coming from cleaning the injectors and less if not no gain frmo the carbon clean. The true test would be clean the injectors, dyno, then do the carbo clean then dyno.

Maybe you misunderstood, this carbon clean also cleans the injectors at the same time. The injector cleaning is not separate from the carbon clean in this.

What would be the point in having the injectors cleaned separately when this does both at the same time?

Now I think you have misunderstood Max. What he is saying is, that the power gains could simply be from the injectors being cleaned in the process of the carbon clean.

As in, just having the injectors cleaned with give the same power gains. Fark, now I'm confussed ;)

Depends on the leak. If your peak boost doesn't change, peak power won't increase as the leak will probably be insignificant as the turbos get to work higher in the rev range. If it is causing boost loss, you will find higher power (with the higher boost obviously). And yeah, post it up.

    Yes...

If the leak is on the intake side, less air will be entering the enter. Less air, less power.

Maybe, but, I was running really rich before (and still am) so I would have thought running rich means your injectors are basically giving more than enough fuel to the system? In fact, running rich probably means there was a lot of carbon build-up?

Though regardless, given the option of injectors clean or injector and carbon clean you may as well do it properly once yeah? I doubt there's much difference in price.

It may be that the power gain is purely a result of the Injector Clean, as part of the overall process, with the remainder of the motor being cleaned of carbon buildups giving no notable power gains.
Dont know, just a dumb electrician, but would think that it would all be advantageous, even if only a partial aspect results in a KW+++ reading.
Any1 in Qld have one of these?

my car had had an "upper engine clean" (same stuff they use on WRX's) when i first got the car.

Doesn't that clean the injectors? (question not an answer... i dont know)
regaurdless, cleaning carbon buildup EVEN IF THERE WAS NO POWER GAIN would surley be a damn good idea?

yes I agree doing both in one hit would be good, I simply wanted to point out your gains might be from the injectors alone. I'm sure removing the carbon would be beneficial TOO.

I am about to pull my plennum this weekend to have the injectors sonic cleaned, if the carbon service was available here I do it. I assume you don't have to pull apart the motor?

Nope, Tom said they just hook into the fuel rails.

    My car also runs rich

I'm hoping cleaning the injectors will fix it because I can't find any other issues. Perhaps I have a leaky injector, a custom tune should help too (thats early next year).
