Ok guys lots of questions from the newbie!! I'm buying an intercooler for the zed but I'm thinking of getting the twin uprgrade from ttzed rather than the big single, simply because I don't want any cooling issues with the standard front bar. Does anyone have these as upgrades and are they just as good as the big single? Does the single front mount bring heat control issues? I don't plan on any massive turbo upgrade and there is only about $200 difference so I guess I need peoples opinions preferably from those that have either orsomeone who has tried both. Cheers Rich
Really! Its interesting that you say that as you have the big front mount. I take it you have overheating issues or do you simply think that the side mounts perform the same function as efficiently. Rich
There has been huge debates on this. Some workshops say FMIC others say SMIC... I would say get SMIC if you are money concious and FMIC if you are after the appearence I'm sure both of them perform quite well as there is huge success both ways
I have a front mount as I like the look It is well proven IMO that side mounts outperform front mounts in the 300zx for 99.9% of applications. There are very good reasons and dyno proof in regards to this as well as yanks running very low 10 second 1/4 miles passes with them. Your decision is a good one so stick with it
why not go for a fake front mount that way you could keep the rice/tough frontmount look, while having the performance of sidemounts!
Who cares about having "the look". I couldn't care less about having a fmic in the looks departnebt I only care about performance and efficiency. Thanks for the opinions I will go for the smic. Cheers Rich
lol, nice idea for ebay.... you know i wouldnt be suprised if these exist. Located on the shelf right next door to those electronic BOVs.
I wouldn't go for a front mount if you have a stock bar, stock cooling system, or an air pod sitting behind it catching all the heatsoak. There are ways to negate some of the arguments against them (even the radiator issue, btw I have never ever EVER come close to overheating, even on mega hot days ). Also If you found a vertical core front mount, even better Do a search on the subject and you will find lots of enlightening 'discussions' on the subject
I am having a FMIC with the west wings kit WEIRD stuff I have seen of late. The twp in and two out FMIC actually have pipes that feed bacl toward the same side of the engine and have pipes with enormous bends in them that go back behind the IC. Now I recon they would be crap !! all too hard and if that was what you had to do I would have SMIC's. I intend tend to feed the other side of the engine so the piping is way easier. If you do it like this I think the FMIC has merit. It has way less bends in the pipes, and subsequently way less air resistance than either SMIC or weird FMIC that have hugely bent pipes. Anyway, I will see how it goes. The plans are in motion. I did see an ADVAN IC while I am here in New Zealand and it is really built well. The internal channels are actually extruded alloy as opposed to the weird fluted triangular light alloy v shape in most FMIC. The thermal mass in the ADVAN one is just what I want. Its quite heavy. Light IC's are not all they are cracked up to be. They heat up too fast and drop efficency quickly when pushed. I will search it out when I get home.
x feeding air is actually part of the problem with front mounts in 300s thats the reason people have started making them that feed back to the same side.
indeed thats why i wouldn't go front mount. cross feeding of air from left bank to right is an engine balance mechanism.
