Looking at buying a 300ZX in a year

Hello everyone, allow me to introduce myself, I am Damo and I'm looking at buying a Nissan 300ZX in about a years time, I'd like to spend around $15,000 on a N/A 2+2 Aus-Spec preferably post 1990 in manual, is my budget realistic or should i aim a tad bit higher?

Now, I've been reading the tech tutorials and the reason I want an Aus-Spec 300ZX is that there would be less chance of someone winding back the odometer? Also maybe Insurance might be a tad bit cheaper than a Japanese imported one right?

Also, I'm curious about the fuel efficiency of these things, mind you I know its a "sports car", so I'm not TOO concerned about it but I'd prefer >20L/100Km. I'd like to hear what you 300ZX owners manage to get, I live in a country town so the majority of my driving would be highway, no start-stop like you get in the city.

How are these things like maintenance wise? Again I know its a "sports car" but how is availability of genuine or aftermarket parts on these things? Easy to source? Pain in the neck? I hear the engine bay is really tight and hard to work on.

Whats this thing like performance wise? Would it compare to a BA/BF Ford Falcon in straight line performance/acceleration? Is the car comfortable to drive? Whats a realistic 0-100km/h time for a NA 2+2?

Fuel and octane ratings, does the 300ZX need to be fed 98RON, or will 95RON suffice? My local petrol station doesn't supply 98RON.

    Thanks in advance.

hey man, all i can say is, there a great car to drive and with good maintainence you wont have a problem, also 15g will get you exactly what you want and more. for a really nice well maintained 300zx NA your looking at around 12g. also you will find mostly about 12-13ltr/100k's is average, but for freeway around 9ltr/100k's.

the parts arnt hard to source when you know the right people, just forum members, like cresta and so on. also the engine bays are a bit tight, yet as i said before and many people will tell you, its how you maintain the car, keeping good clean coolant, new oil, service, Also when you buy make sure you get one with the 100k service done and try to get one with the plenum bypass done. will make it alot easier on you.

As for seeing age, don't look at the clock, look at interior; seats, gear knob etc, and get a vic roads check on it for smashes and all.

Not so many bolt on modifications can be done easy, but after learning about the car, alot can be learnt from the tech section - http://tech.aus300zx.com/

As for performance, a 2 seater compared to a 2+2 isnt much different in weight, something like 80 kilos, yet the 2+2 has been known for better handling due to longer wheel base, yet that is a topic to argue, off the line a good clean 300zx NA will if not beat, get very close to a new BA ford falcon.

Also running on 98 octane fuel is the best for the car as they were made like that in japan, yet you can, and many do run on 95, even i do sometimes, yet you are able to change your computer in the car to run it at certain temp and fuel.

i do recomend getting a 300zx as they are lovely to drive and very nice with the Targa shades in summer, they also dont appear there age. GL mate! hope my info was helpful.

If you;re looking for a quick n/a its gotta be a 2 seater hard top. they really move. But a 2+2 aus spec would hold its value better id say.

If I was older than 17, believe me I would. Next year when i turn 18 and have my Ps, I'll be all over the 300ZX's like a STD from a cheap hooker.

Not necessarily looking for a "quick" n/a but something with a bit of power when i want it which a stock NA would fulfill.

Also, I don't really want the removable top, I'm happy with a fixed roof.

or a 2 seater targa, only 20kg heavier and you get the wind in your hair :D

$15000 will get u a VERY nice example, u can get a very good NA with plenty of maintenance and mods for $11k or so, like mine which is currently for sale. in terms of outright acceleration id say its about the same as modern falcons and commodores, except when u get to the first corner the family car will understeer into a tree and the 300zx will fly past :D:zlove:. and if your doing highway driving, 10l/100kms is about what i get. theres something wrong with it if its drinking more than 15l/100kms

    BigCol That's what she said...

An added benefit is that Aus-specs are WAY easier to insure. ;)

Nice car, looks awesome. I'd buy it soonish if my mum wasn't such a Nazi, that's why I have to wait until next year when i turn 18. The car would have to be completely stock though because the new P plate rules down here would have me bent over the table and raped with the 10ft wide 30ft long stick of law enforcement for driving a car with performance modifications.

I'm going to be paying for the car with my own hard earned cash by the way, just in case someone decides to throw the parents buying me my car line.

Being P Plater with a sports car would be hard enough and expensive to get insured as it is, let alone a Japanese Import. Also a reason behind the Aus-Spec requirement :)

Just remember that if you want an Auspec, it has to be an NA and a 2+2(anything else IS NOT an Auspec).

Righto, I can't drive TT on my P's anyway, also I guess that means I'd be stuck with the removable roof? Thats only a little preference, not crucial :)

To the best of my knowledge, they are NOT Australian built. They are Japanese built, manufactured to Australian requirements/equipment levels(Auspec).:zlove:

I like my chances, going by what everyone has said here, I'll have enough dosh to pay for full tank of fuel, full year of comprehensive insurance, a years worth of rego + stamp duty tax and 4 new tyres if they go for about $12,000-$13,000 right off the bat.

i got me a nice NA Jspec with a few nice mods LOL.. low K's .. will be looking for a cheapish (under 10K) twin turbo come next year LOL.
for the price ur giving urself, you can find a VERY nice ZX :).. however... maybe aim for one about 11-12 so u leave urself a bit cause maintainance can be a pain LOL.
Economy is remarkably good considering :LOL.. i get about 9.5 outa mine on highway... about 13 around town..
Well when you get it :) you will definately have fun :).. and hell. if ur in NSW when you get it drop me a line and ill bring mine up and we can have a look over yours :)

No you can get a n/a hardtop but it wont be aus spec, which is the obvious disadvantage

I can sacrifice the hard top for the cheaper insurance, not a bad trade off!

i had about the same money you had, however i bought a car that needed a bit of work, came with a cracked aftermarket front bar and thats about it, but that way i could make my car exactly how i wanted, still a long way to go but its exciting seeing your car change into something you really love:)
