Yeah on the left hand side is a good place for weight & for access for the driver (not so good for co driver). I made an ally doubler (0.60") that runs across under the parcel tray & secures on both sides, bracket is bolted through parcel tray & doubler - use nyloc nuts or they will come loose.
not a good start... Went to eastern creek for my racing debut and disaster hit. 1st lap everything felt good suspension is awesome brakes great and was revving crisp all the way to 7500rpm Second lap coming into the straight hit rev limiter in 2nd and change to 3rd. Rest is history diagnosis: MOST WILL THINK IT WAS THE STOCK BOTTOM END?....NOT AT ALL F@#CK#N SNAPPED A CAM CLEAN AT DRIVERS VVT GEAR!!!! HOW INSULTING !.....at least blow the stock bottom end first In a way I'm happy this didnt happen on a big dollar engine .. engine is coming out to assess the damage but valves and head damage is obvious but will wait to see bottom end. Worst case time for a complete big engine build. So this performance setup could be going for sale.. turbos, manis ,dumps ,intercoolers...And 3 mild cams . .
Gutting I feel your pain - well mine lasted a hell of a lot longer & didn't break down it just got unwell over time. But still sad to hear man. Bigger & better time is it?
pics only pics I got to take is of the broken BEAST dropped off by tow truck at UAS.. Still looks fast
That sucks big time, not what I would have expected to see as the weak link in your setup Rob. Never seen such a failure without an impact, unlucky for your first track outing.
this sucks, ive never seen sucha failure before. rebuilt vct units? did u say before that there was some noise coming from one of these units?
Damn Bad news Rob, didn't get much of a run, was interested to see how it would perform too. Your not the first, i blew mine in a big way at Eastern Creek a few years back and got brought home on a Skyline trailer ( oh the shame) But bounced back bigger and better with a stronger engine ( all it takes is money) What cams are they?, does it looked like it was cracked? Iv'e got some money to help with your rebuild, sell me your inlet cam gears. need any help with the rebuild just yell out. Damn
yeah but it was the other one ..bolts came loose on the adjustment for +-5 degrees...... nothing major and nothing to do on this side ..
everything is only 7000km old with 3 oil changes in one year. JWT MILD CAMS SERIES 2 so guessing you could actually get a another reground since all blanks are now series 2..?? but will be going bigger cams with new engine specs.. these series 2 cam gears are here to stay
I have seen a few snap cams, almost all are nissan engines. Last was an L20B, very wild aspirated engine, stock bottom end with every trick in the book thrown at the top end. The story is usually very similar to yours, alot of revs, reground cam, un-balanced bottom end. Harmonics in crankshafts due to poor balancing (in both cases it is Nissan's balance job) are almost amplified throughout the engine with the vibration reaching any rotating shafts with a reasonale weight at the end of it, this unsupported weight(cam gear) is then leftto try and absorb the vibration. This can effect cams, turbos, gearboxes or any accessory driven parts like power steer pumps and alternators. While the balancing isn't extremely bad on most VG's, who knows how good alot of them are in stock form, add a heap of high rpm cycles and you have the answer. The result sucks, but it's better than popping some pistons and having the turbo's eat the left overs.
Sure I have $182382 NZ you can have for a bit - that's worth about two cents in Ozy money  Yip I just threw over $3.5K at mine just to replace one piston Obviously it ended up being more than one piston being replaced but that was the starting point. Harmonics DRZ400Y says - that is a scary thought, lucky I had mine balanced BUT what if it is out
Sorry to hear the bad news rob, i was following this thread and learnt a lot from it, would you look into doing a engine convertion now or will you stick to the vg30? hope to see you in your zed soon!!
I like to keep the original setup in cars and besides have too many upgrade parts in the garage now to change If I decide I want a chev I'll get a monaro
Very disappointing man... i was so looking forward to seeing this thing go... well, look on the bright side, a forged rebuild now.
Wouldnt this be caused by a warped head? Thats been the case with my brother's RB30, he's snapped 2 cams, in both cases the heads were warped...
