Yes, you've guessed it. Another My Zed wont start thread.

Hey guys, the last time i drove the zed, which was friday night, everything was great. When i tried to start the car to drive me and my mate out it wouldn't start.

So first i thought it was the battery as it seemed like it was a battery related problem. So i tried to jump start it, also leaving it charge on the other car, and still no luck.

I tried swapping batteries, no luck.

Tonight I swapped the PTU with a known working one (and in the process moved the PTU near the fuse box), and the FPCU with a known working one. Still no luck.

I have checked the coilpack connectors to see if they were still pushed in tight and they were.

I dont really know what else to check, can someone shed some light on my PITA situation?

Well as I turn the key to start it, it sounds like its gonna kick over and start, but then it sounds like its getting slower and the lights on the dash dim.

Theres no loud clicking sound like when the battery isn't charged enough.

What other info were you after?


Its a big pain becasue its my daily.

 

Try jumpstart it with a set of leads...may have a dead cell in the battery.

 

Ok so. when you turn the key can you hear the fuel part start up? When you try to start it does the starter motor kick over like normal?

 

Tried that mate, even used another battery

 

Ill go have another check, it sounds like it usually does when i'm starting it though.

How much of a pita is it to change the starter motor?

so youve kicked it over at high speed and it didnt start
we can assume its not battery

check your cas - rotate it under the cas test - listen for injectors while your there this will check your cas is working and you get to check its fitted properly - because you have to put it back in - lol

then check for spark at a plug- you can then back step from here to find the problem!!!!

hearing the pump doesnt mean your getting fuel as it has a filter and regulator to go through as well as things like PPV's etc affecting it as well

loosen fuel rail hose and it should leak as its under pressure - then you know if your getting fuel (prepare for the spill - and only do it with a cold motor (thats you) - NEVER WITH A HOT MOTOR

check your air flow and test for vacuum leaks
if theres no leak - you then have a problem thats likely to be mechanical and major


when asking for help diagnosing always test fuel air/vacuum and spark first and post results
more info is always helpful as was mentioned - eliminate as you go - it will be easy to find the problem if you do - remember that those tests take only 40 mins to do

if you eliminate by test any component - let us know and we'll help you get there

from there we can really start to diagnose the problem with some sort of confidence as without those basic tests, its really a guessing game even for the best experts - I only mentioned vacuum because the TT is heavily reliant on a good seal

anyway check a spark plug first for spark then check your fuel at the rail for pressure - dont reverse that - ie leak the fuel then test the spark or you could blow yourself up!

eliminate the possibilities and post back and we can help you have a win - I'm sure

why would you think its the starter - is it turning over slow even with the jumpstart and good battery??

turning over but getting slower and the lights diming mean either excessivepower drain or lack of power, if you have ruled out your batery check your earths and the connections to the starter motor, bad connections mean you have to draw harder on the battery to get the right amps to start giving similar symptoms to a bad battery.

 

Sounds like normal battery operation to me, it will only crank a motor for so long before dying, and he's been trying for a while by the sounds of things.

To the OP, have you checked for fault codes before you go chasing ghosts? If your cranking but not getting anything firing and this has happened overnight...check your fuses for the fuel pump relay, and check your fpcu, it's in the tech section.

 

After much annoyance the problem was........no petrol.

Well, i am assuming because my driveway is really slanted i think the gauge fuzzed up and gave me an inncorrect reading.

Because the dial was just on empty and when we are on fuel light we have a few litres left.

So i put some petrol in and jump started it and it decided to start for me.

No offence, because I've done this before myself in my old Torana, but don't you hate when you realise its something so dumb and simple and you feel like a moron afterwards? >.<

 

LOL!! Dont worry mate i did the same thing a couple of days ago. Thought i wired in a new S2 PTU incorrectly so redid all the wiring just to find no fuel in her

 

Alright, after 2 or so weeks, the problem is still there, but with a twist..

It takes ages to start, i have to connect it to another car and just keep turning it over and pressing the accelerator. I have tried another PTU and FPCU, i doubt it is the FPCU becuase it is pumping fuel.

When the car is running it has no problems whatsoever, but it takes a long time to start.

What do you guys think the issue is? I haven't heard of something like this before.

 

check your fuel filter there is a belief that running your tank empty will drag through the sludge. not saying this is the case just something to look at. if it is the case it may also be worth running an injector cleaner through as well. not as good as a proper clean but you may find an improvement.

 

Disconnect the TPS for a few minutes to clear the self-learn.
Reconnect.
Get Consult.
Check you have TPS at 0.44V at idle. Adjust if not.
Get a timing light, check for 15 degress at idle. Adjust CAS if not.
With Consult, do a Base Idle adjust, and ensure your IACV is correctly set.
Check battery voltage is around 13.4V whilst running. If not, your Alternator is screwed.

 

Clean the coolant temp sensor and connector.
