hey mate, all i can say is these cars a ****ed once you have an electronic problem, they dooooo not like running with slight faults with sensors and anything that upsets the ecu will cause it to shut off for protection on the engine especially an earth fault, once V goes down current draws heavy to replace the v drop, the ecu wont like that at all. if you have had bad earth to the ecu i would recommend getting the eprom tested in the ecu, it may need reprogramming

I was just playing with my timing and after just loosening the bolts the car would not start. Adjusted the CAS and it was all good again, weird.

We didn't touch the adjustment of the CAS, only removed it all together to test...

    Hey MagicMike,

You've probably already checked this a thousand times but just incase, while someone turns the engine over, try wriggling and pushing/pulling the CAS connector/plug. On renees Z, a simple gentle wriggle of this plug was enough to stop the engine and sometimes wouldn't start untill you wriggled it a bit. Haven't had the problem for ages now as I think I cleaned the plug up a bit and bent the contactors a bit so it fitted more snuggly...but I also think the plastic clips were fatigued enabling the connector to sometimes work loose.

Worth a shot anyway, as always it will be some overlooked simple thing.

Good luck getting it started, would be frustrating in the extreme knowing nothing should have changed but obviously something has.

    Cheers!

    Craig

Mine just wouldn't start out of nowhere a couple of years ago, (before I had any idea what I was doing so this diagnosis is from a mechanic) it turned out that the problem was the CTS was telling the ECU it was minus 42 degrees so it was massively overfueling and fouling the plugs before it could fire. It just turned over and over and over but no coughs or splutters or anything.

    neither did I

    I just loosened the bolts.

Unlikely to stop the car from firing, diagnostics will show, but MM's connectors ARE dodgy so worth checking.

If you havent done it already.

replace the spark plugs with some copper ones.

Even if you have fixed the problem with all this stuffing around. The plugs are have probably been hosed with fuel by now.

    Its likely they are rooted.

Coppers only cost $3 each so its worth a try.

Coppers + ptu s2 should get you good spark----- i know this is far from a zed but my xl250 had a problem starting and i couldnt work it out as it had spark fuel and was timed and just wouldnt show a sign of starting even though it had spark i tryed a different coil and it started straight up dunno what the deal was but hey it worked

There have been a few posts where PTU's have fried themselves due to not being grounded.

I reckon you've done your PTU. See if a borrowed replacement will solve your issues.

    UPDATE

    Still no go!

    Yesterday we tried:

Spare S2 PTU - no change.
    Spare CAS - no change.
    Jump starting - no change.
Brand new copper plugs - no change

    Conzult/Datascan - no faults, timing = 16, coolant temp = 30ish, everything seems as normal :(

Starter motor is making a strange noise tho and need to tap in a new thread for one of the bolts as the hole is stripped :( Bones will drop off a tap and bolt for me this arvie :D Cheers Bones

Anyone got a spare starter motor to try?

The only thing that got even a slight change was playing with the fuel pump relay (as per advice from Karl). Switch fuel pump relay off, crank with wide open throttle, when car gives a splutter switch relay on. Still knowhere near starting but the battery was dying (it's had alot of cranking to do in the last few days) :(

Those saying possible ECU failure, we dissmissed that as it connects fine to conzult and datascan and the thermo does not run constantly (like it would if ECU in failsfae mode).

So what else have we missed? And what else can we try??? I'm in desperate need of a guru right about now...

Have you confirmed that the injectors aren't jammed open or pissiong fuel out as discussed the other night?

I have a spare starter or 2

No didn't chech the injectors operation Chris :( Too pre occupied in getting plenum back on to hook conzult up to it (since I found my cable)...

Will pull plenum again this arvie and check.

    Keep the suggestions coming people...
