i would rather not go the GMH option at the moment..

I would like to keep it a little more simple plus i am a ford fan hahahahahah...

Hey Terry , I'll PM you practice sessions details for the DriftZ when I know them so you can come and have a look/listen. Its worth seeing before you you make a decision ;)

    FAR out isnt it obvious

    a 5.7litre V8 ls1 is LIGHTER THAN ALL 3 OTHER MOTORS suggested.

you have to understand that a straight six 3 litre will put weight ahead of the front axle
turning the zed into a boat. its not so much weight but WHERE YOU CARRY IT.
hence a V engine is better more weight in the centre of their car.
thats why supras are abit more floaty and slower on turn in than zeds.

an ls1 is lighter, can put out 300rwkw in NA form (imagine TT!) this is seriously the best bang for your buck. your giving it a v8, making the car LIGHTER, no lag whatsoever and the ability to make huge power with great reliability.

    what are you waiting for?

Is there any evidence to support this theory.

i understand the principle behind this but has anyone ever written up a tech article to this effect? I like to investigate things a little more than i need to...

Whats the weight difference between engines, by the sounds of it you are aware of the particulars concerning all engines?

i think the ls1 is around 80kg lighter than the vg due to alloy block and no turbo's hanging off the side, the weight hanging over the front axle is a no brainer.

Here is a link of a ls1 conversion

Apologise for being naive BUT, why is the weight of the axle a no brainer? Ok so the other engines are slightly longer, but by HOW MUCH? and whats the impact.. please dont get me wrong but i am trying to understand the dynamics of a conversion like this.. By the sounds of you guys clearly know something I don't so please share the love...

On a side note, inaccurate observations based on unsubstantiated evidence is rather naive in its own right. So i would rather fact than fiction....

hangs over by an extra 3 cylinders length, which would be roughly half an engine weight.. perhaps 100kg extra hanging over, induce understeer and extra tyre wear, will also need to change spring rates to accomidate.. or so i would guess.. im no expert but its just my conclusion.

Hmmm na like the TT factor to much!

TT V8 would be nice but I am too much of a tight arse for that. That being said, with the price of unreged Z's going about I may consider one for the shell and a track car at some stage!

Love the sound of the V8, but love the sound of the VG on song too much!

Teza there is some issues with situating the engine further forward in a car, the main one being the balance of the car will be upset which will induce understeer and make the rear end a little twitchier under power, however that is in a full blown race car where every little detail shaves tenths. If you were planning on doing it to a street car who cares really.
Think about it this way. We all fit large FMIC and upgraded thicker and heavier radiators into our cars plus heavier aftermarket front bars etc which all add weight to the front overhang of the car. Take away your FMIC and put your car on a diet and the differences would be very minimal indeed. Then if you are really worried about it relocate the battery to the boot etc to help share some load.

    In Summary
street car - no issues really unless really picky
race car - run more caster to help turn in etc and improve understeer conditions and maybe chaneg the suspension and or geometry to improve traction through travel and arcing.

I am with you Matt however a nice supercharged v8 zed is on the cards me thinks

    Thanks Jason

Appreciate your comments as i do from the rest of you.

Essentially what i need to understand the dimensions between these engines. This will help me gage what is required for the project. So a comment was made by Mafi that the difference would be around 80 kgs and 3 cylinders in length? What i dont understand is that even if it is an inline 6 and not a v the fact that it can fit in the car with sligh modification means that the overhang wont be that much greater?

Understand weight is a big issue but as mentioned jason depends on application. Mostly street car and straight line.

Not quite 3 cylinders etc but at least two. I have the dimensions around here somewhere for the VG30DETT and a few V8 engines but not the straight 6 RB's. Jeff Fear at SSS can help you out I dropped in there one day to measure a host of different engines most he has on pallets in stock. The main problem with a straight 6 or an eight is getting to sit on the crossmember the correct way. I am looking at using an R33 crossmember which puts the mounts around 110mm further forward in the engine bay. This will eliminate the need to modify the firewall however the engine will sit further forward as a result. Lose the FMIC and a few other bits and peices and increase the castor and the difference wont be huge, tyre wear may increase but that goes with the territory. I will have a squiz through my info and shoot some stuff over to you I have a bunch of pics etc too somewhere.

That looks like a crazy conversion...

Wonder where the radiator will sit.. The support has been cut out. Note the picture displaying the engine sitting almost half way on the cross member. Although you would assume that the engine is sitting further forward hense the radiator supoort being cut.

    Not too hard!

Change the gearbox to a GTST one, custom sump, custom engine mounts, computer and loom mods and mums the word,:D

With my z , the intercooler and radiator are all in the normal spot but slightly to the front. They modified the crossmember and sway bar. Ours still factory, No cutting to the extreme they did and still running the 300 box. I spoke to speed and sound and they wanted $3500.00 US to give me the info. I worked it out myself. should be on the road in about 3 weeks. And the room we have is scary.
