Nah i like them but not as much as something like a late model corvette. More to the point, i prefer v8s to turbo 6's so it would have made more sense starting with a factory fitted example.

One of the things in Australia is you dont have as much of a choice for the money so its easier to start with something cheap, and spend here and there

Unlike a lot of people who start making changes or upgrades to their cars, you're experienced enough to know how much the changes will cost. Knowing how much your car would owe you, I'd take a good look around at what other options are out there & make your decision. It's a real eye opener to look about to see what else your money could buy. Like you mentioned, many desirable models are selling surprisingly cheap, especially if you find a desperate seller. If your Z ends up owing you $50k or more, you'll probably easily blow $30k when you eventually sell. If you buy something else for $50 or $60k and just jump straight in & start enjoying it, if you bought well you'll enjoy every moment knowing you'll only dump maybe $10k when you sell it. GL!

Afraid I don't really have the time at the moment Dave. And if I was to do a kit car, I think it would be a Clubman. Had a go in one a while ago, hugely good fun.

Mine is not a track car at all, I don't get too excited about circuit racing. Much rather have a fang in the mountains.

I think I'll pass Kingy, that's an even worse investment than throwing money at the zed!

That's pretty much my reasoning at the moment. As much as I love zeds, I'm pragmatic enough to get rid of it :p

Any high performance 90's car that has done the kays and has not always been garaged is going to need dollars to keep it decent, 20 years say is a long time in automobile history. Not sure what is expected in that situation but the reality is it's a long time and a Nissan like any good Jap car will on average do better than most.

Spending more than bare maintenance on any car like that is going to be a love thing, depends on what you want and where your priorities are.

I tell you what, the grin on my face after chasing the likes of Porsche 911s, brand new R35 GTRs, highly modified R34GTRs (& dozens of other cars that would smoke 99% of cars on the road) around a race track and while maybe not passing them - or even getting passed but never loosing any serious ground......

You would know what to do straight away if you had seen it for yourself :)

The Z32 is getting to be an old girl no doubt about it but she still has the ability to bring just as much fun as ever - just in slightly different ways now that's all :)

To be fair they are not much chop as a good road car once they are heavily modified, my blue car has gone just past the point where it was fun to drive on the road, it's now just plain stupid.
Wifeys 97tt is NICE, does everything a good car should and is better to drive than a lot of brand new vehicles, we will tweak that one just enough to keep it as a good road car.

You need to answer the question of what the intended use is for the car before you can decide on how far to go with mods.

Racing dollars are always justifiable :) spending over regular maintenance dollars (dollarZ?) on a road car does not make much sense to me seeing that newer models are usually better in all the practical ways than the older stuff. No matter how much we would like to delude ourselves :)

Might not have been in the game as long as most, but probably have spent a similar amount. I don't regret a cent, I am getting sick of sinking money into it, although that's probably because I'm just buying parts and aren't getting any results just yet.

As money and time permit. It has never been the major focus. the intention has always been for it to be a sleeper so as to not attract unwanted attention. And to be maintained in a state as close to a new car as I can. It gets better each year with small refinements and attention to detail that don't break the bank in any way. I would do it in exactly the same way again and all in moderation.

To me all cars regardless of badge are just a waste of money. All in moderation and keep a level head. There's more to life than this.

    Peter.

I spent 5$ on a NISMO badge once, just to have it arrive and find out it was cheap plastic...
thats money I'll never see again.

In the end of the day, if I were to throw 50k at a car, I'd rather throw it at a m3 or a 911 than a z. The parts would cost more, but it's a higher starting point to begin with.

I bought mine for $6K, spent $1.5K and used it as a daily for 2 years. Loved every minute of it. I know that's not big dollars but it's meant I've met some great people on here.

I will keep it maintainted but if an engine re-build is needed I will re-assess.

I think it is a time of life thing not so much the money - what works for you at the time before the zed I had a modified Jackaroo duel fuel , winch etc, sold it to put a new kitchen in the house!

When I was younger cars took up my time, now its my house and family and kids.

Zed - I bought mine for $4500 nearly 2 years ago as a daily, spent $2000 to replace the Auto at a time when I couldn't afford time or money to do a manual conversion. Spent another $2500 on it for basic mods, tune, intercoolers, exhaust , and it is about 220 RWKW , and alot of fun for me.

Now I am thinking about 2013 seriously about maybe selling up and getting something else - Audi S4, Evo 7 or 8 or similar. I had an EVO 5 in NZ, best car I have owned IMHO. A more modern version of that would be awesome.

A 23 year old zed unfortunately may not be keeping up with MY needs to fit in with MY life. However a more modern car would meet my needs. My 2c .

I would say sell up and use a bit more $$$ to get what you truly want and need at this time of your life :) My 2c

Except they are not so great, a good friend of mine brought an EVO ten or some POS brand new a couple of years ago, had the gearbox out of it about three times under warranty, the last time it was out the workmanship on it was so bad it made for an epic post of what NOT to do with near new cars.
The mechanics somehow smashed a hole in the gear case and just used Needit or similar to fix it - near new car, still under warranty etc and Needit used to repair a mechanics f up - pure awesome!

The guy got so sick of it in the end he and a good mate pulled the car apart and fixed it themselves, that's when they found the plethora of BS that had gone on, parts in backwards, missing bolts, bolts to long, to short, hammer marks on gearbox components.

Mostly not the cars fault but then the car should not have required the work, ditching even a 20yr old Nissan in favour of a Mitsubishi isn't a good plan IMO.

Well it all comes down to one thing really. Are you a Z32 fan for life, or did you just happen to stubble across one when you were looking for a car?

I admire the old classics at car shows (Monaro/GTHO etc). Of course they aren't fast and handle terrible compared to today's cars, but imagine the amount of money restoring them.

People don't always spent money to be the fastest, or best handling car out there. Obviously if you do, then nothing will compare to the newest cars coming out on the market. Obviously in 20 years they too will be handicapped just like the Z32 is now.

For me, I have been a fan of the Z32 the first time I saw one & still enjoy just looking at it in the garage :zlove:
Because of this, I don't really care about the money that is spent, as it is a passion of mine & makes me happy (most of the time )

If I want a fast car, I will save for a R35 GTR, but the Z will always be in the garage :zlove:
