Pissing down raining here today so I thought I'd take the zed for a spin. Driving on the freeway and the car started misbehaving so I decided to turn around and head for home. Another kay down the road and the zed started to drift all over the lane. Pulled over and noticed the new rear tyre came off the rim!!!!! Got talked into buying some better quality german tyres. Done less than 1k and it appears to have detached from the sidewall. At least it didn't do any damage. I remembered I left the car jack at home so I called a mate that only lives a kay from where I broke down. Just as I got off the phone a Burgandy 4wd pulled up. I got out of the car and he quickly took off!! I was only pulled up 2mins and someone was already planning to strip the car. My wife got his number plate at least.
Bloody scabs!!! Anyway - Glad that your incident did not end more seriously. A detached tyre on a wet highway???? Who fitted em? If you have any problems taking them back, let me know. On the day I took pictures of the other Zed on the Calder, there was another car broken down and abandoned about 10km up the road. It was a 85 (?) Corona. Suprisingly, noone had stripped anything off that.
Had them fitted at Fawkner tyres on Sydney road. I always use them and first time I've had a tyre issue. Will call them as soon as I dig up my receipt. I think I'll stick with nankangs. Not the greatest but good value for money. Yeah couldn't believe how quickly somebody wanted to raid the car I was ready to jump in the car and follow them, then my brain kicked in and pointed out the obvious At least when the supra broke down it took a few hours before someone pulled up thinking they're going to score some free parts.
The zed strikes again. On my way to work this morning. Left 15mins earlier than normal as I had to check a few systems before everyone logs in. Turn off the freeway only to find my car drifting. I quickly pulled over to discover I have a flat! Yes the spare wheel my mate lent me. I was only 400m from a petrol station, so I limped it there. Started pumping up the tyre and BANG! Sounded like a bomb went off. A 20cm section of the side wall blew off, luckily it didn't hit anyone. I look up to be greeted by the same cop that I met on the calder as we were moving the broken down zed. He looked at me and said, get the wheel off and we'll run it down to the local tyre joint. So I jack my car up to find large puddle of coolant leaking out! I popped the bonnet and noticed the top radiator hose split just before the clamp. The cop looked at me and said "Geez mate, you must have done something really bad. You are so unlucky!" I then noticed I left my tools at home. A few mins later I had a tyre iron and the wheel off. Got the tyre replaced and on my way to work. Walked into a disaster that took me 4 hours to fix.
I figure if I persist it will all be worth it in the end (I hope). I guess my downfall is I never give up. Ordered a new set of hoses, hopefully my patch up job holds a few days.
The thought crossed my mind on many occasions, but would set me back even further. Sent the last pair of bovs back for a refund as they weren't new or plumb back as advertised and ordered a set from the US as I have less hasles that way. Ordered a new pair of oxy sensors as consult is telling me one has failed. Finally, a set of silicone radiator hoses is on its way, hopefully that will arrive before my patch up job gives way.
Ross, Apart from your engine niggles, the rest of your car is immaculate. I'm glad you're persisting. Cheers.
Thanks mate. Your car is an inspiration, hopefully I can get it as neat as yours one day. Once the mechanical aspect is under control I will do a bit of bodywork and re-trim the interior (on a budget).
No wonder you had trouble fitting the engine with dumps. Glad you sorted it out in the end.:rofl::rofl::rofl:
Did a quick re-tune, pulled fuel back everywhere and the car runs a lot better now! Hardly stutters at all and is starting to feel more like a turbo vehicle. Will be wiring in an airfuel meter as soon as my new o2 sensors arrive (throwing up fault code). Then I'll try to get it on a dyno to try and get similar readings. I suspect my wastegates aren't right as it should be hitting 14psi and I'm not getting over 9psi and barely any boost leaks now. Also it only feels as powerful as a stock zed despite running a pair of T25/28 hybrids.
New adjustable front upper arms arrived today so I quickly fitted them. At least now it shouldn't chew the inside of the front tyres. Also hooked up an MBC and set it to around 12psi. Major difference. The car really gets up and moves for a change! Need to get it on a dyno as soon as I can spare the cash. New O2 sensors also arrived (and socket to fit). Got busted tyre replaced today so the car is pretty much ready to hit the GOR! Tweaked the fueling a bit and it's becoming a MUCH smoother thing to drive. Pressure tested the cooling system today. Had it pressurised for 5.5hours and the needle didn't move at all! Good news is the cooling system is fine. Downside is I haven't quite located the leak. I'll go with my dad's theory, that being that the line going to the overflow bottle has a hole in it or isn't sealing properly. Makes sense as it's the only line in the car I haven't replaced.
Went up the street a few minutes ago, spotted a silver zed near my place. Tried to wind the driver side window up and no joy! It struggles but won't go up. Great.
If I could get someone to the f#@king post office I'd have the window working by now! Might have to cancel my wheel alignment as there's no way of getting the window up and I can't drive it half an hour in the rain with the window fully down to get to the place. I just hope the weather's good tomorrow morning. Replaced all the coil connectors. Surprisingly it made a difference as the car idles a lot smoother now. I ended up cutting the old ones off and soldering new ones on as I don't trust the old contacts.
Fixed window problem. Discovered that the window popped out of the rail on the lower side of the door towards the door handle. Pulled the rail out, cleaned and greased it, refitted and the window is back in action again! New bov's arrived today so will try to fit them as well as new o2 sensors.
Window problem is back! Once I got everything together, wound the window down a couple times to find it won't go up again. Pulled the door apart again to find the the nylon roller thing that makes the window sit in the rail has snapped in two! So I pulled a bush mechanic and threw a lump of wood in the bottom part of the door so the window can't go down to the point of no return. Installed new silicone radiator hoses as well as the overflow line so cooling system should be trouble free.
