    I know 1

case of psychosis from weed, a cousin's good friend. I get more out of speed (as in KM/h speed) than weed or even alcohol.

As the partner of someone with mental illness...

I'd never try any of this stuff. I may be a bit 'square' but if you saw the trauma involved in living with mental illness, you'd never try drugs - EVER - even if there was a 0.0001% chance of anything happening to you.

Cigarettes will be the next to be illegal

Has anyone else noticed recently the govt. is trying to quickly 'phase out' smoking... and with good reason. Just look at the way related cancers and other health probs that are costing millions of $ to the health system.

I mean, i understand it's addictive and have nothing against smokers, but it is self inflicted.

    I dunno man

there's a whole lot of $ in tobacco taxes and just think, the earlier you die, the less time receiving government pensions and other subsidies.

Not often I agree with Nathan, but he is absolutely right on this one.

Pity is that his advice will mostly fall on deaf ears.

As for you Col, you're not "square" mate, you're just bloody realistic. Your partner is in very good hands, with someone like you for support (I'm pretty sure Nathan will agree with that also).

    i go the other extreme.

    legalise it all.

banning just doesn't work, and creates the black market, which is the source of much crime, and drives addicts to do stupid things to get their fix. in the states, 3/4 people in jail are in there on drug related crimes. think of what this costs the gov. war against drugs just doesn't work.

check prohabition of alcohol in the 20s for good example of why banning drugs just doesn't work. alcohol consumption dropped for like a year, until the black market kicked in, where levels went straight back up to where they were. then when it was legalised again, alochol consumption stayed the same.

agree that meth probably can cause psychosis,

but to say that this dude was 100% stable, had some meth, and went and cut off his nuts.... well i highly doubt that. meth may cause psychosis in heavy users, but i'm thinking it will occur over a span of time, and not after a particular night. i also think the psychosis is due to the large degree of sleep deprivation associated with heavy meth usage.

not saying it is or isn't true, but please explain how it can be proven that a person does or doesn't have a predisposition of sorts? and how do you define normal?

    This is true for alcohol...

I'm affraid the affects of meth are far more severe.

Hence why alcohol is still legal and meth along with other 'harder' drugs aren't in all countries around the world.

I believe amphetamines was used as early as the 20s by doctors to treat mental illnesses and eating disorders until the true affects were discovered...

    Acid...

I've heard of people staying in permanent psychosis after an acid trip. The trip itself can actually be diagnosed as temporary psychosis (eg. laughing non-stop at things that aren't funny at all) and some stay in this state permanently afterwards.

    Health cost > pension payment

So I dont think thats a concern. It costs an enormous amount to treat smoking related problems. I agree though that probably the only reason they are legal still is the huge amount of $$$ the gov gets from taxes and probably campaign donations/kick backs.

    Good question

I doubt youd get it off one dose either, one binge however is certainly possible. I think its a lot to do with sleep deprivation also. When I see guys/girls in ED with "insomnia" as their presenting problem I laugh as usually tends to be guys on meth or speed. I ask them if they wanted to sleep why the hell did they take the stuff in the first place? Im a softie though so help them out.

Predisposition is usually related to family histories and childhood/teen behaviour. Some people while not schitzophrenic have borderline behaviour and with a strong family history you would probably say these guys are predisposed to it. How to prove it is only retrospectively (looking back) as there are no diagnostic tests really for anything related to psychiatry.

    actually

the US government probably profit from it, the privatized prisons and corporations like Microsoft certainly do, they get hella cheap (slave) labour out of prisoners.

Unfortunately it's having an effect in the courts with people doing time for lesser crimes and for longer.

Oh and of course Australia is going the same way. We probably won't profit from it though with American companies running our prisons.

maybe, but only cos you charge too much :)

I think the labour part is a good idea

Personally I think our prisons are way too soft. People actually want to go back. I think they need to return hard labour. I mean we (the tax payers) are paying per day for these guys so we should see something for it.

I reckon chain gangs digging ditches around Perth would be great. Could lay all our powerlines and fibreoptic cable underground for minimal cost over what we pay already.

    DAMN RIGHT!!

These fellars do shit all physical work/labour while in prison. They get to watch TV, play video games and just laze around.

TOTAL AND UTTER BS!! How is that type of treatment meant to discipline someone??

I just look at it like this:

Everyone knows they used to put cocaine in coke (can't half tell by the name!) and everyone drank it in public etc. Now if you get caught with any at all...

Somking is kinda the same and then they brought in legal ages, banned from more and more areas, and i truely think it won't be long before even private health funds won't pay for smoking related illness. I mean there is that much proof it's almost definate: if you smoke you will eventually get sick and die.

That's the feeling i get anyway... but i'm right nearly half the time!!!:LOL::LOL:

    Egg ....

    Excise....

...on cigarettes is nearly 70% depending on brand. eg Longbeach 40's... 66% on say Winfield.
That equates to over $5,000,000,000.00 per year.
I recently saw the estimated figures of what smoking costs, sick days, medical costs etc and this figure was aprox $500,000,000.00
I don't think the government is real interested in stopping smoking, they say they are but $4.5 billion profit from excise is a lot of tax.
