yeah i'm up for a group hug!! :D

I voted yes cos i thought, "hey we're all mature people.. adults who can participate in civilised conversation about important topics" but clearly from even just this thread, discussing whether we can discuss religious/political topics is getting a little out of hand... from both sides of the argument.

    Its obviously a "touchy" subject

Everyone is entitled to an opinion but when "opinions clash" is where the problem is, personally i don't care which religion is better or more "correct" or if George Bush is a wanker, at the end of the day ppl think different stuff, personally im not here to start arguments about this sort of stuff, if this is going to continue in the future, all this useless bickering i'd say forget about this topic its not worth the hassle

    Regardless i would say No.

In my opinion, i don't really care, i love a good debate/discussion on peoples beliefs.

I bring here the same guidlines i would suggest at just about any social function with people that aren't, good friends or open minded. Not to say that any of you aren't infact good friends or open minded :zlove: .

This general rule of mine is purely because I know there are people that would be offended by my atheist views, and quite frankly seeing as one's beliefs isn't really that important as long as you have a general respect for who they are as a person and vice versa, it is in my opinion that there is a certain grace period with new people.

However, as the open minded person that you are, i would discuss the finer details of what i believe and vice versa, knowing that i wouldn't offend you :p

    Amen brothers!

Well before this topic gets locked and or deleted I wanted to say thanks to most of you for contributing.

I raised the topic and am an atheist! But I am still prepared to listen without calling others PIG or a ****** moron.

Its a big universe and there is room for different opinions

    Too sad

How many active members are on this forum?

Over 800 active (supposivly). At time of writing, I dont think 34 is an overwhelming majority ;) The poll has only recieved a fraction of people who care one way or the other. Perhaps the others aren't fussed either way or haven't had the chance yet or even looked. Imagine if a fraction of the way in an election poll they said 'looks like liberals gonna win, lets not waste any more time with this'. LOL

I dont think a whole new section needs to be dedicated for it, but say there was. I wonder how many people dead set against talks on religious topics and/or get offended by any word that has a hint of faith attached would not only read the discussions, but add their 2 cents worth :p

Low key ones like what aK had posted earlier which had nothing to do with one particular faith to another you would think would be fine. (and to lots of members, it appeared that way. But it became religion vs aethiest. (instead of the usual one religion vs another). I didn't think aethiests believed in God so wouldn't see the need to 'defend' themselves or fellow aethiests against something they believe doesn't exist!! LOL

Pete, I personally find posts about "Street Racing", "Excessive Drinking", "Video Games I've played recently", "Who got bashed by whom", "All Cops are Bastards", and "UDP vs FMIC vs SMIC's", quite annoying and sometimes offensive. Can I look forward to these subjects also being removed from future threads (in the best interests of harmony, of course)?:eek::(

    OMG!!

You said Amen!! It reeks of religion and am so insulted right now!!! LOL Christ!! My topic title also reeks of it. Jesus!!!! I said Christ!!! ARGHHHHHH

    LOL

With exception to a few comments, I think it was a good 'discussion' overall.

I'm all for the Group Hug with HaylZ, but the thought of being murdered by Mrs Chili puts "The Fear Of GOD" into me.:eek::eek::eek::p:zlove::zlove:

Now that should have offended a good cross-section of the assembled ratbags on here.:p:p:p:p

this is a 300zx website and it seems latly that all hold different perspectives about things......so as seen the political and religous stuff sometimes goes into an argument even thou we say that it isnt just so that we can get our own points across.........

im saying this as im a muslim and the stuff that is going on is terrible....just because of some individuals many of us are framed or we all are seen as werid etc..... eg i really hated what that sheik dude said and what was worse was the amount of media put into it....

thats why i think lets not talk about it and be what aus300zx is ....a close community of zedders

I havent read the book Baz and only grabbed the movie as what i wanted to get was out but found it interesting. What people have to realise is that these movies and books to some extend are written and made to be sold to the widest possible audience to make money!!!. Money being the key word so the movie makers sometimes bend the truth or what is thought to be the truth regarding these matters to make there book or movie more interesting. There have been a few religious remakes of recent like Mel Gibsons passion of the Christ which copped a hiding by religious groups.

My main concern is how do we know 100% for sure what is true and whats not. After all the bible is in fact a book originally conceived and written a long time ago, It has had various reworking's over the years which could have involved minor tweaks or changes to suit the ongoing changes relating to religious beleifs.

I am not highly religious by any means but did get married in a church had my children baptised under my religion and attend the odd service at our church in Sydney and this topic is discussed on occasion.

Reading some of the posts in this thread, it is impossible to accept that this is the close-knit zed community that you would like to see.
There are some on here who espouse rabid hatred of anyone who holds on to a religious or agnostic viewpoint.
In the past 24hrs I have witnessed the ranting of some extremely troubled individuals, individuals who I would find it very difficult to be at ease with in any social fashion whatsoever. You and ak are not part of that group, and nor are many other of the members I have met in the past 6+ years, and who I have great respect for.

I get offended that it is believed that because I don't believe in God, somehow I practise paedophilia?

I don't need god to know how to life morally. If I choose to accept God that is my choice but the problem IMHO with religion is that someone always wants to convert you. It's a personal choice, and if I care to change what I believe in, then I will look at all my options and choose. I don't need to be preached to.

Also, I kinda thought NZR was like for posts such as "Spotted a Red Z" or "What carpc are you using in your Z". Just because people decide to postwhore this section doesn't mean it should descend into a free for all talking about whatever you want.

I also find it funny that some people considered the thread that aK posted non-religious. How many times does God have to be mentioned before something becomes religious, or how much % of a picture has to have the word of God on it before it is? Does this mean I can have pornographic pictures in all of my Z pics so long as it only takes up a certain percentage of the picture without it being classed as pornographic?

    Meh 2c.

that's exactly my issue with it.. I don't get offended by anything but feel I have to intervene when someone's spouting crap and I haven't got time for it!

As moderators we have no problem with religious posts (provided they are non offensive, denegrating to others, etc), however it is almost a guaranteed precursor to a flame war. While the original post which starts a thread might be innocent, it always goes down hill from there and that is why we are against this. As moderators we are getting tired of HAVING to step in because people aren't behaving themselves, we should have to be involved in only a very small number of instances, yet that has not been the case. People know that if they go over the top we will take action, and so rather than holding back people are counting on that fact and posting something they know they shouldn't, because they know we will come in and remove it. It might be unfair that a whole thread gets removed (or we ask that it not be posted in the first place) because someone else has made inappropriate comments might be unfair, but we have to stay within the bounds of reality here. Moderators spending significant amounts of their free time individiually deleting posts within a thread is not how we want to spend our days, especially when it's in regards to a topic which actually has nothing to do with what the forum is here for (cars, remember them?).

Part of the guidelines are to prevent offensive posts going up. Now it takes 2 people for an offensive post, one to post it and the other to get offended so I can understand how theoretically therefore any post is a dicey issue, however with a post which is either pro or anti religion there is already a tightly wound spring ready to go off and rather than handle something dangerous wearing a protective suit and a box (springs go for the crotch, trust me) it's smarter just not to handle them at all when there's no need.

This forum is about the 300ZX primarily and so if other non Z related issues have to be sacrificed then that seems like a logical choice rather than let them ruin the forum and it's atmosphere. If this was a forum about religion, and 300ZX flame wars were causing problems, then our decision would naturally be the opposite.

If people want to discuss religion, politics or anything else which is likely to lead to a flame there are plenty of other places to do it so I don't see why people feel that it has to happen here when it's to the detriment of the forum atmosphere.

Geoff said it's a big universe and there is room for different opinions. That's true, but on this forum there is not the room for the arguments between those with those different opinions, and in an online community those two simply cannot be seperated.
