We all know that this WILL be going into MK2, but before it does, and once you have it removed from the MK1, can either you or Bryan let me know asap......

Have tape measure and will travel...... If I can get my hands on it for a few hours I can duplicate it easily enough :D
I need 1 for BADZX & K1NGZ and the white ZX probably needs one too although it needs an auto first :(
(hopefully Bryan has a spare there for me still !!)

Yeah I know yours for a 2+2 but there wont be too much differance between the 2+2 and 2+0, the main hoop is the hard one....

Dare I say it, but a few forum members may want one aswell, and seeing yours is a 'PROVEN DESIGN'...... ;)

Will be good to see you back in a zed, I'll come lend a hand after exams in mid november.

I'd be interested in a rear cage too for 2+2 assuming it complies with all the CAMS regs regarding mounting, materials, tube sizes etc etc.

Talking about roll cages. I don't think they are legal for 4 seaters especially 2 door 4 seaters. The only one you can have is the main hoop and that has to be 300mm, or 600mm I am not sure, further back than the rear most setting of your seat. They said you cant have the front top rails because you could hit your head on them.

The NCOP (which QLD will be under very shortly) is very reasonable, only real difference between CAMS and NCOP is the thickness of the mounting plates which is 6mm rather than 3mm. And the no front bits etc.

sure will. whats a good time? i was hoping round 3pm ish?
just looking at joins etc, i'll be running a 6-point cage.

and not to get too off topic, but half cages are legal in vic.
full cages must be within 100mm of any pillar and bolted to the front. no intrusion bars.
again, vic roads have certain laws. and cams have regs, personally im building mine for cams.

    CAMS regs are at

    http://www.camsmanual.com.au/pdf/10_gen_req/GQ11_Schedule_J_Q410.pdf

Be aware that this link will change for 2011 so navigate to "www.camsmanual.com.au/pdf/10_gen_req" to find the link after 31-Dec-2010. You are looking for "Schedule J".

None of the Google references on Vicroads took me anywhere so I have sent an email to them asking for a reference ... when I get it, I will post it here.

its to hard to have a happy medium i find.

VIC road only allow half cages or full cages if 100mm from any pillar in the car, not to obstruct the doors (intrusion bars) and cant be less than 150mm from the drivers head.
no cross bracing on the roof either with the cage BOLTED to the front.

i havent read to much into cams specs, eventually i will. im building a cage that will save my life, not save my ass from police.

    from my understanding.
welded in cage, intrusion bars etc all allowed. anyone know material thickness needed?

About a month ago i asked the local mechanic that does all the local race cars about full or even just the rear half cage and was told that roll cages in the 89 2+0 was not road legal and that if i had 1 installed that my car would not pass a N.S.W blue or pink slip so i chose not to get 1 for this reason

when you take measurements of martins cage i could probably CAD it up and then do FEA on it to see what sort of loadings it can take. could then show it to a proper cage builder and get feedback on possible improvements.

martini do you have any specific pics of where you bolted down/welded the tubes to the car ???

looks like it will be a very easy roll bar to replicate. alot easier in a 2seater aswell hopefully.

ill have that main hoop, then like you have 2 other pipes coming down to support it and have them going down into the covers just behind the seats

Hey Chad, I don't have any detailed pics - but basically there are backing plates in the wheel arches and under the car, I just played with the cage position until it was in the most stable position and drilled..

so simply just something like this:

    pipe, backing plate and bolts

it will depend on the use and ultimately the states laws for your particular application......

Each 'sporting vehicle' has very differing needs as to what they do.

    IE: two extreams.....

    A/
a cage for a drag car has to not only take a high speed rollover but must also be able to take the sliding on the road surface, its calculated into the pipe thickness that a pipe of 'x' size with a given weight will grind away at a certain rate ..... imagine having a 50mm alloy hoop thats only 1.5mm thick fitted to an open wheeler and its now upside down and sliding on that alloy bar at 200kph, you'd be lucky if it lasted 50metres before it simpy ground away

    B/
whereas a cage for a 4x4 rock crawler wont have the high speeds involved, the impact on a rock during a slow roll with 2ton of vehicle requires a totally differant line of thought. Pearcing/crushing and kinks are the major issue in this case and because of it we see cages made from much larger pipe diameters but with thinner wall thickness. The larger pipe diameter spreads the load at a given point much better.
Simplefied..... stand on a kids toy first thing in the morning whilest half asleep or sit on one ??? .... obviously sitting on one hurts much less.
The larger load bearing area known as your butt will "absorb" the point of impact much better
    :D

    but to answer your question.....
generally road registered cars require a 32mmNB bore pipe size with a 3.2mm wall thickness as a minimum.
Mandrel bends only, crush bends like an exhaust pipe has are not permitted except on secondary non supporting braces
IE: a cross member over the floorpan and centre tailshaft tunnel thats fitted between the 2 legs of the main hoop may have crush bends provided its securly bolted at the highest point of the tailshaft tunnel.... this is about the only one I've come across where a crush bend is 'allowed'.
