What is peoples experience racing Evo 9's?

I was racing the other night (on a race track ofcourse) against an Evo 9 and a wrx with uni chip and exhaust. Both running 1 bar of stock boost and i also was running 1 bar of boost. Off standing still starts i would get owned thanks to my car wheels spinning alot, and still wasnt able to figure out at what rpm to lunch at for a good take off.

On a rolling start from anything above 50km/hr i would straight away pull a car length and eventually to over 2 car lengths anything over 150km/hr and on to even 250km/hr the zed would be infront. But just got upset at how awesome the AWD evo and wrx grip off take off giving me a hard life just trying to catch up to them.

Iv heard heaps of people on this forum saying oh wrx and evo pfft i always beat them ra ra ra, but i doubt it would be from standing starts.

    Whats peoples take on this.....

    cheers

i have beaten many wrx's off the line, havent come up agaisnt an sti off the lights yet just rolling.

have raced an evo 7 off the lights and won (both 1 bar of boost). Saw him a few weeks later and he raised boost past 1 bar. and it took me until 3/4 of the way through 3rd to get past him

oh yeh all mine was also done on a track

Well my personal experience isnt all that good. My ex had and 1995 WRX, stock, and My Z use to distroy it in any sanario.
But as soon as they get a bit modified is when it gets messy! I start panicing and tend to over rev and, ooops, wheel spin city!

RE: Taking off, I find you need to be between 3500rpm & 4000rpm. But in saying that, once I drop the clutch by no means can I go full throttle, I will get the slightest wheel spin but I have to flutter the gas till it fases out. Once its all grabbing down, flat stick......:D

Overall its about a 1.5 second process to eliminate total wheel spin. Through this method is how Ive owned GTO's and S15's....

Onced raced a mates cousins Evo 8 on 20psi, he had me by a bus length, and that was a good take off, but once where on the straight, that 20psi was equlivant to a Z's safty boost:p :p :p

    And yes, all Eastern Creek.........

My take is, you can't launch your car properly? :D

I think its the 255's on the 20 inch rims, they are kinda bald lol

But still thats no excuse to not beat an evo 9

Practice makes perfect, I used to cook the shit out of the tyres on my 89T trying to launch it. Granted it's a bit of a beast but it didn't take long to learn it. Everyone has different techniques, but in my opinion the most important thing is you've just gotta RELAX! Dont get so throttle happy!

My suggestion is to just do as you do now but ease of the throttle a bit and then try again... Keep trying until you feel it's getting better, there's no "magical" rpm point where you can just drop the cluch and go! There are WAY too many variables (like bald tyres, 20" wheels that are too big, suspension setup etc) which make comparing car A to car B completely impossible unless they're indentical in every way.

Just practice launching, hell do it in a "private" carpark if you have to. It sounds stupid but there's no need to run a whole race and then have to wait until it starts all over again before you get another shot at launching lol

    Practice, practice, practice!

Must be an interesting Race Track. Rolling starts?
BTW, Wizard was only pulling that sort of top end speed at PI and he had the benefit of a high speed entry onto the main straight.
You will go blind if you keep doing it, you know(place BOTH hands on the steering wheel).
I can recommend a good Instrument Technician if you want that speedo repaired.:p:zlove:

What you're going to do is nominate which "Race Track" you're using at night, so that I don't accidentally drive onto it unknowingly.:eek::eek:
Oh!, and try using a bit of lubricant to avoid blisters on your hands(worked every time for me):p:D:D:zlove:

Just a quickie, AK I noticed you don't have a front number plate. Is that legal (in your state and or in QLD)?

  15. RedZedMikey

RedZedMikey RZM should now be DZM

It is DEFINITELY NOT legal in Queensland. I got the ticket to prove it while I was up there for the Nats in 2003. Is also a 3 point offence in Qld!!!

  16. CHILI

    CHILI Indestructable Target

Not legal in NSW either(you can't even have a smaller plate fitted).

itis certainly not a 3pt offence in qld in 2006-2007, i must have been done at least 3 times, 230 bucks a pop i think

I think until you've driven one - let alone driven one hard, you will never understand.

The abilities of the WRX and especially the Evo are phenomenal.

I second those comments, although never having driven one I have raced a heap at yes various race tracks in both the state supersprint series and various track days etc as well as with some v8 Supercars and all I can say is corner speed and handling is key to there success. The wrx and even more so with the Evo, the things corner like they are on rails and the 4wd systems pull them through every time. The MRT Evo 9 at Circuit battle went through the turn onto the straight at Wakefield undertook me in the process and was maybe a car length in front before I could lay down full power again. The cars are very quick through the corners and on a twisty RACE track or off the line at the DRAGS that will mean an immediate advantage. Its only the outright power of the zed that will push it too the win as long as the STRAIGHT is long enough
