Hi, going to be buying a 300zx in the near future and just want some info and advice on what to look for and what is a good buy. i will have upto a $12,000 budget. Im from Victoria.

It MUST be: Twin turbo, 2+2 and a targa top

I want it to BE/HAVE/DO: manual, bright red, not have big chromies, maybe decent looking aftermarket bodykit and/or interior, do a quarter in 13.5 or better.

I understand i wont get a car thats all of these things but i would like to get this car to this level even if i have to do it myself.

Questions: are all T Turbo setups parallel or is there singles or sequentials?
What are some common problems i should look for?
Do they have as bad of an overheating problem as people make out?
Can you get an import 2+2 or are they all aus ones and is the power level different from the imports and can you flash the ecu?
whats a fairly safe boost for the stock twins? 14psi or is that too much?

Heres some links tell me what ya's think:)

Firstly, for that budget you can get what your after, just look around and dont but the first thing that pops up.

Secondly, they are all "parallel setups" from stock anyway. Some people attempt/do single turbo conversions, but thats not my area.

Thirdly, common things to look out for include if the 100/200k service has been done, if a plenum pull has been performed and perhaps if a S2 PTU has been installed. Heaps more, but thats a basic rundown. There is an article in the tech section about what to look for when buying a zed, look it up.

Fourthly, any car that hasn't been properly maintained for 20 odd years will overheat. Simple things like a plenum pull, radiator flush/rod and replacement of coolant will usually solve this.

Fifthly, aus specs only came in 2+2, jap specs came in 2+2 & 2+0, so your options are greater with the configuration you want. No power difference as only the jap specs come TT.

Sixthly, the highest boost you can run with standard turbos, intercoolers and injectors is 14psi. Thats whats generally accepted.

Seventhly, try buy a TT from the forum, not carsales if you can help it. You will probably get a better idea of the history.

Thanks button is in the bottom right corner of the post ;)

Huge turn off when someone goes to spray such a unique color and doesn't do the Engine Bay as well. Half assed job. That killed it for me.

yeah ok all in all i does sound like it has some good parts on it , , the fire wall is red ( thats a put off ) but still if he is willing to do a little work to it , he might have a good car , either way the car need paint on the gaurd, so maybe they can talk on price, and get some of the firewall done as well . over all i no nothing about this car, but it can be worked with .

hmmm plenum pull, so this is good if the car has this done because were in warmer climates and they can be troublesome?

that zx at the bottom looks real nice! love the vents between the headlights because ive seen some ugly ones. ill be putting ferrari/altezza taillights on my 300zx when i get em because in my opinion the tailights date the car. love the exterior but not so sure i like the interior.

Need a 2+2 because i have a 3 year old son so will need a carseat in there and yes i know there is f**k all room but il find a way. i have put 1 in my Mitsubishi FTO and that only has a little more room.

couldnt find the like icon but maybe because ive posted only once i cant do it?

so some good mods would be Intake maybe with cold air induction, twin 2.5'' catback pipes with muffler delete and maybe hi flow cat, boost controller, ecu flashable???, and front mount this would be a reasonable fast car maybe with some 245's or more and a decent clutch might do a 13.5 run or id need more?

Please don't put Ferrari styled tail lights on your 300ZX. It's a 300zx, not a ferrari. Buy it for the car it is, not for the car you dream of. Ferrari lights look cheap and ricey IMO. But hey, it's your car... You'll be the one driving it.

Why not opt for the 2k tail lights?

    Anti 14.7 x 14.7 = 44.1

Yeah, that sounds about right. I'll hit the 13's with good tyres and a good driver easily. More important than any of those mods is maintenance - restore it before enhancing it.

first mistake ... DO NOT DECLARE YOUR BUDGET ....!!!!!

then look at two in QLD .. that of blueZ( Garry), a ripper .... and that of Pregz, cannot recall if it is a TT but if so, another ripper .. !!

in terms of maintenance, presentation, plus, plus you will not do better than either of these class machines.

Hmmm dont know if id go as far as saying mistake because i thought i set a fairly high limit for what im looking for(looking at buying 1 in 4-8 months roughly)

i do like the s2k tailights but not as much as the ferrari ones and i have seen them in person and they look great unless theres different types but each to their own.

what brand is the front bar on the red one and what brand is the vents between the lights?

The small rubber hoses under the plenum can split if they have not been recently replaced dumping coolant and killing your motor,
and they are a mongrel to get at.
Correct we are a warmer climate and this plumbing is not required here.
A plus to removing the under plenum pipes is, if you have to remove the plenum again (to get at injectors) it will be easier.

Good luck on the buy. You are doing the right thing by doing your homework.

will prob hang on to my FTO for 4-8 months then it will be 300zx time:)
i know simulators arnt everything but on forza 4 playing laguna seca i can only manage to beat my stock FTO's time by 3 seconds with a stock tt 300zx but theres deffinatly more room for mods with the 300zx
this is my current ride 200hp FTO

Bar is a stillen bar I believe...possibly same for the nose panel....Look around at a few differnt Z's before you decide mate...that way you can discover common problems and make a final and well evaluated decision...also do alot of research on the forum first...will save you many hassles!

I'd steer clear of anything that has been extensively modified....best to start with a car that's fairly stock and build it up yourself IMO.

Look for under 150,000km's if you can as well...

Make sure you check in around and under the car.

Should see mid 13's or a flat 13 with basic bolt on mods:

    Exhaust
    Upgraded Intercooler
    More boost with a Nistune
    Bigger tyres and rims
    NA subframe conversion (optional)
    Bigger air intake pipes
    Pod Filter
    Carbon ceramic clutch
    Chrome molly flywheel

Pretty much what I'm running plus a little more

Good luck and welcome to Z land :zlove: :br:

Thanks DJHZEX i know its better to do myself but if some of it is done or its done properly i could save some money to spend on another department of the car.
Why would you want an Na subframe? they would be weaker right?

yeah probably 18's or maybe even 19's with wide tyres
running low to mid 13's do you have to max out the revs in third or grab 4th in a manual?

was riding in a 300zx and it was pretty crammed even compared to my FTO which is also a 2+2. i suppose if you only have 2 in there you can puch the seat right back right? or is it as crammed as i remember?

Whereabouts in VIC are you? Im in Bundoora 3083. If nearby, i would be more than happy to show you my zed and how nice it is and worth getting a zed. Its definitely quite unique and the passion will definitely come.

Mine is only a NA but if you enjoy my zed im sure it can only get better with a TT.

Zed is a jaw dropping shape anyway, no need to kill it with ferrari lights and change things like idlers on the twin cam belt, water pump and we ran a 75mm alum radiator never any overhaeting probs and we raced it at 15 psi, and for your info car will be quicker on standard 16 inch semi slick rubber than trying 18 or 19 inch that is for show not go

NA subframe means changing out the HICAS and getting a lower ratio diff...bit more fun at the drags :)

I wouldn't go much bigger than a 18 IMO...just get nice wide tyres with plenty of grip and you shouldn't have an issue with traction....Find third is the most evenly matched ratio....Think the zed's are best redling first and 2nd then changing third around 6600rpm I believe...
