Whats the best way to retrieve wandering tools from the top of the transmission without pulling it out ?.. Ive just lost a spanner and a socket down the back of the engine while trying to undo one stupid bolt.. :(

lol that sucks, i lost a 2mm allen key into the depths of my engine not too long ago, i wonder if its still there....plenum pull will reveal all (when i get around to doing it/get enough money).

in regards to your questiong though, i really have no idea, i thouhgt magnet but i dont think that would be too effective when its surounded by, well, a metal car :p

to be honest i had a bit of a stress a few drives after that, but made this thread and the general oppinion seemed to be that realistically it cant to much damage: http://www.aus300zx.com/forum/showthread.php?t=259619
(btw yes typo i meant 1mm in my post in this thread)

stu .. the basic magnetic pick up tool wil not handle a

reasonably weighted spanner .. try this ... get your hands on a magnetic sump plug ... attach this, using a hose clamp or strong glue, to a metre length of garden sprinkler hose .. and voila !!! .. you will pick up anything dropped/lost in your engine bay with a fair degree of flexibility as well .... damn strong magnet ...!!

disclaimer: hot300zx .. this will not work on fitzroy street, st kilda ...

Cool thanks Baz I had read of this before however the problem lies in the fact the tools have gone under the gear box housing and laying on top of the gear box itself out of sight.

Ironically while looking for the stuff i lost I found 3 Plenum bolts one with a 12mm socket still attached. None of them were mine lol

yeah, you need to for out the $25 on a good one, mine can pick up a 250mm shifter, or a claw hammer, or pull open a kinchrome tool box draw when its in the "pushed closed" position (ie it over comes the ball stop resistance)

The real deal is an owesopme tool, once got a pair of vice-lock pliers out from the backof a tool draw the (they) had jammed!

    *TIP: buy one of these!*

Go to the hardware and get this retrieval tool. Dont know what its official name is but its a flexible meter long metal thing with a push button on one end and an expanding three hook on the othe other. The more you push the more the three prongs extend and open up. $5 and so handy.

All these tools are great assuming you can see what you are trying to get, I cant :(

Jaycar sell Rare earth magnets. Those bloody thing are so strong, you often can't puull two magnets apart without something like leverage from a screwdriver.

That's another option if you go down the magnet path.

Supercheap best buys - they have a lovely little tool i like to call the long fexible springy grabby claw. The long flexible springy grabby claw has a red button at the top that when pressed it sends four claws out and then when released these claws grab whatever they have surrounded, saved my arse many a time, and has the benefit of not ataching itself to everything on the way to where you need it to grab something. But this tool like any specialist tool has a specialist price tag, AUD$2.00, i recommend every zedder own one

Just in case anyone is wondering

The whole reason this happen is my POS Battery Terminal lead is like 5CM too short, so Im replacing the whole thing down to the starter motor. There is one 10mm screw holding the wire to the back of the engine and its a pain in the ass to get out :( thus me dropping tools while having my hands in all sorts of spazzy positions
