    Front Face..

Is it possible to get one with a 1 Din face, so one of these could be slotted into the dash looking very neat and tide?

im sure someone with necessary metal skills could probably make something

So, where do you propose your display should be installed ?

If it was best suited to be installed in a Din slot, surely you would supply a kit for it to be mounted that way. It is quite a bit out of the way there though - you have to turn your head and take your eyes off the road to see it.

To me it seems like it should be mounted in a bit more direct line of sight so in front of the instrument cluster would be the obvious place. It does seem to block the lower gauges there though so that is not a perfect spot.

What spot is the display designed to be mounted in ?

it is not best suited to anywhere, as its not made for any single car. the most popular place is steering column in front of cluster as you mention (for me in my N14 it blocks 180km/h+, trip odo, clock and 0-1000rpm, so nothing important), above or below driver vent, on left of cluster on dash, in front of centre console. (ie in front of something unimportant, or 'between' a vent and a DIN slot).

the problem with din mount is <10% of people (when first asked, when i did the first batch of them a while ago) wanted to pay more for DIN mount. cost for me to get someone to make low quantity DIN mount for those who did want it was both more than most of those <10% would have paid, and/or more than itd cost them to make one themselves.

also, many people dont have a high position DIN, nor a free DIN regardless of position. and yes as you mention i didnt feel comfortable having it in the DIN as you're taking eyes too far off the road to see it, and certainly dont recommended people put it in a DIN for that reason (unless they dont look at it much).

it was made less than DIN size so people could, if they wanted, make a bracket or otherwise mount it in a DIN slot (rather than 'sorry its too wide to fit' with the V1 displays). that doesnt mean it was made to be mounted there though.

i think maybe 3 or 4 out of ~140 people who've bought one, have asked me if i have a DIN mount/bracket they can use with it.

    To make the bracket

For the people who knocked up their own din bracket how did they do it?

I had a look at on the other day, the upper and lower lip protudes out then there is a flat piece of plastic that covers the face between the lips then folds around the side, would it be possible to remove the face, sand down the lips to give a flush surface, the get a 1 din blank cut holes to match the screen, button, USB then mount it in some how?

no one has got back to me about knocking up their own mount in DIN - i assume the few that asked just found another spot for it. but there are probably 2 ways to do it:

the left/front/right 'C' piece has a 'tongue' in the top/bottom (and ends) that slots into grooves in the top/back/bottom 'C' piece. you could then conceivable replace that front C piece with a DIN blank, cutting rectnagles out at the top and bottom for where the back piece would 'bite' onto it. the tounges are 1.5mm thick, so if u want the back piece to bite onto the blank u would either have 1.5mm thick blank, or thicker blank but make toungues on the end that are 1.5mm (in width and depth from main plastic)

e.g. if u had 180x50mm blank, you would take 144m wide and about 4mm high rectangles out of the middle-top and middle-bottom. cut hole for buttons/lcd/usb. the edge bits of the rectangles cut out would need to be another 1.5mm deep (5.5mm) for about 3mm off the edges to account for where the tounge/groove stop (either that, or extend the grooves on the back piece all the back to the edge.

ud then need to figure out how to secure it all (perhaps just to front centre console by making din blank big enough it doesnt 'fall in' and with some other fastening of some form.

a completely alternative way to mount it in DIN slot would be to essentially make a 'socket' for it...ie metal bended in such a way that it leaves a 144mm wide, 33mm deep empty box in middle of it, it wouldbt be flush/same fronting the whole way, but it would allow it to be removed easier.

ie a top view would look something like this

    Code:

Put me down for 1 Green mate.
Have you got more pics of the blue though? Would really like to see some different angles

i dont have any pics showing it on any big angles. pictures dont tend to show it too well so its hard to take a shot at the best of times without it coming out looking different than it really does.

id really only get the blue if you're going to mount it somewhere thats facing you directly. the angles arent too big an issue, but combined with less visibility in competing light and it makes it harder. i.e. definitely not to be mounted in a low DIN.

a guy here made a bracket and he said in response to how hard it is to see, "not bad at all actually". picture of his position is directly below (then another general pic of blue lcd):

one other issue with availability - once i receive the green lcds at start of next month, ill have enough parts for at least 20 boards (i.e. 15 green, 5 blue) but due to a combination of quite a few orders in last couple weeks, and just now finding some of the enclosures defective, i wont have enough enclosures immediately for more than 20.

ill be putting in an order tonight for more enclosures, i may even get them not long after the lcd's at start of july. worst case some people may need to wait another week.

it is possible that i may be able to get some white enclosures. those people with blue displays may prefer the white enclosures (similar to this but in glossy/polycarbonate material), so they may wish to voluntarily wait and get one of those.
