Convince my parents that Zeds aren't junk!

    Hidds THAT annoying guy....

to be honest, I regret getting my Z as my VERY FIRST car.. INSANE learning curb with repairing EVERYTHING ALL THE TIME... so much money spent on it... and that's just repairing shit, haven't even touched the performance side of things yet on my Z

i picked mine up for 6k, and spent probably double that getting her in working order

listen to your parents, get something you wont care about as much, a little charade or something easy to work with, save your money, and wait till a mint condition one comes along, you don't want to be spending every single pay check fixing things and repaying your parents back

if you do go ahead and get one... call one of the members to come and help you look for one, nothing better than an extra set of eyes who know exactly what to look for with these things

I dont know what you guys crying on, but if you guys treat these cars good. They not bad cars.
I own my car for last 2 years without a single problem.
I always do the service ontime, never thrash my car like a shit box.
I always have fun with my car now and then. Like racing with other cars but never gone over limit.

If you looking for good NA look between 8-11k mark
For TT look between 11-15k mark and always buy stock or least modify car.

Buy cheap and it will eat ur wallet.

While Shifter makes good points, I see it this way...

    Your only young once!

Do you want to look back in 10 years and say "Damn, I shoulda got that zed that I really wanted", or do you want to look back and say "I'm glad I got my mortage a year or two earlier, I mean I'm only paying the thing off for the foreseeable future."

The way I see it is simple. A mortage will always be waiting for you, youth won't.

I dont think you need to be young to enjoy a zed.

Lots of wingers here, its a cool car man up and get one. They're tough to work on but not impossible. What even comes close for the price in looks, power and handling?

Simple solution. Ask your father to at least do you the dignity of taking one for a test drive and a bit of observation, allow him to be the one to drive it. Make the offer of allowing him to take it for a spin on a regular basis if purchased. Watch his mid-life crisis kick in and the zed shall be yours. Also point out that the limited seating capacity will deter you from taking mates that may tempt you to hoon. Also point out that owning a car that requires slightly specialised maintenance will teach you how to budget and set money aside responsibly. Also a 2 + 2 treated as a 2 person vehicle has ample room as far as a coupe goes.

As for the zed's reliability, to be honest my NA was/is no less reliable than most of the alternative traditional "first car" options, breaks down less than my mates' commodores and what not. I own both a TT and an NA now, the NA was a daily driver and the TT is presently, I commute 60km+ daily and have yet to experience any form of catastrophic mechanical failure from either. The reputation for z32s being unreliable comes mainly from the maintenance costs on modified TTs and the cramped engine bay. It's pretty basic physics, put more power through an engine and it'll suffer from more wear and tear. If you wish to go down the power building path later down the track, then like with any hobby, expect to have to put some money aside for it.

To be honest a lot of this "zeds are crap" stuff comes from other import owners that only know how to spout bs because "they heard" they aren't reliable and are crap.

    2 things

Dont need to be young to enjoy them

Owning a zed held me back from getting a mortgage by far more than 1-2 years. I love the time I had with my zed but thats the fact. If I went straight into saving for a house I would have saved about $150-200K (how much the prices of houses rose while I 'recovered'). :) It was only the tripling of the home owners grant that gave me the opportunity to enter the housing market. Without that, it would have been impossible. And now my house in less than 2 years of owning it, is worth $100K more than what I bought it for. My primary job only earns me $45K a year.

The zed was my first car and I loved it to bits. But with age comes wisdom and a reshuffle of priorities. Living for the moment is fun for a year or 2, but living for the future is great for the rest of your life.

Thanks for all your input guys, I've been told to wait 4 months -.- because at least then i can test drive stuff :D
Just so you know, I'm not the type of teenager who wants to go hooning around in his car anyway, and I won't be modding it (thats why i really like the look of ZXboss' car)
Basically by the sound of it, theres a bit of variation. Some people don't seem to have to much trouble, while others can spend considerable amounts on Zeds. o_O
P.s How would i even get my dad to test drive a Zed, it's not like you can go and rent them...

Or get a job, save, then buy what ever you like. Or if you have a job already save and get a loan.

Call some car ads, go have a look. Take for drive.

Don't get started with a Zed. They cost money and it will be pain in the bum. Our cars are also addicative, cool, smooth and great fun. Just be carefull.. there may come a time you also have to choose between a girlfriend and the car: I smoetimes miss my girlfriend, but love my z32.

    # aslo do what all the other members here do; drive safe & alway to the speed limit.

Is your father into business investments? well Ive got one for you to show him... my kit conversion product has been years in the making and you are lucky at this time that I am 2-3 months away from from completing it. By converting and overlapping panels on a cheap 90's sports car, you can make it look like a 100k one, this is automobile art that most people envy. Imagine the coin you could make by simply assembling and flipping a thousand dollar product with art as its selling point. I'll let the design do the rest of the talking :)

The design... its basically the picture below but in high resolution.

Second hand car yard, someone you're considering buying from from carsales.com, test drove both my zeds before putting money down. Evidently you won't be going to investigate a car on your own if your parents are this involved with the process. The catch is you have to work him around to at least giving one a look over.

With a bit of luck, Nissan fever might even kick in. After I bought my NA, my father who had long lectured me on saving money and playing it safe and not err driving "enthusiastically", traded in his boring old 90s sedan for a turbo Stagea with a big body kit and rediculous roof spoiler. I then bought the TT, and he started looking into upping his boost. Midlife crisis and oneupmanship make for a beautiful bonding experience if you know how to direct them a little.

This really is easy to fix

Tell your parents you are getting one come hell or high water, if they object and financially block it advise them you will back in a week as you have been offered and paid holiday to Thailand where by you will return with one less kidney and a bit of a scar, while you are there with your new small fortune in hand you will also want to root yourself silly and pick up something nasty at the same time...

Conclussion, just easier for them to cave in then worry about you getting AIDS and losing a kidney.
