    Test the egr

to see if it's working, if it is, leave it there!

Might be a good idea to read Mitch's thread on the repercussion & penaltys for modifiying or removal of emmission controls on cars.Look at what Mitch is going through.I know these controls can be a PITA at times but for what you gain it"s not worth the trouble IMO.Especially the sort of fines they can hand out & still put your car off the road.

Prob the easiest thing to do would be to just disconnect the plug from the solenoid...disables the EGR but if you ever need to put it back into service because of an emissions test then all you have to do is plug it back in...the problem is if the valve itself leaks / malfuntions.

If your doing it because of a new exhaust and headers, you can do the same but just leave it disconnected from the headers and block off the plenum incase the valve is faulty but still leave the actual valve and pipes there incase you need to reconnect it...its a real pain in the arse to remove unless your taking the engine out.

Check out the tech section mate and decide what best suites your purposes ;)

Agree with Craig, unplug/remove the solenoid and blank off the pipes into the plenum. You don't want to have to do what Mitch did...

I was under the impression that one of the main reasons for getting rid of EGR was to clean up the engine bay a little and make future plenum pulls easier?

If all the associated hardware is still there I don't see a lot of point for disconnecting EGR..

Mainly in case its malfunctioning or leaking or you get new headers that dont have a bung for the EGR pipe. People also remove them for what you said, to tidy up the engine bay but if you get sent to the EPA you will have to reinstall a properly working one ;)

    Cheers!

Has anybody had to replace an EGR, or is this one of those "urban myth's", can't really see what difference the EGR would make at a standard emission test ( sensor up the exhaust, check CO, NO, HCHO and O2):cool:

Mitch had to do it in the last week or 2.

Yes, I have replaced the EGR.
It's a plenum off job, then a pain in the ass to get it in. You need to remove both heater pipes at the rear of the engine, and wiggle the EGR in low, then up and under the heater pipe hose pipes. the EGR must be completely disassembled, with the side pipes to the plenum fitted afterwards.

Yes, I would suspect that the EGR will show up in an emissions test, however I have not had to do this emissions test as of yet. The egr reduces combustion temp by proxy, diluting down the oxygen available for combusion. This means less NOx emissions.

Not exactly sure what emissions standards need to be met with a EPA test- if its to the specs of the day, then you would be up against oily old buick 3800 VN commodores, carbied heaps and other old engines without the pollution gear.
If it is to today's standards, then we are all screwed... better carry thru on the Z32 'prius conversion':eek::eek:

Doesn't answer the question, " has anybody HAD to replace the EGR", looks like its being done here as a precaution, but I would suspect it wouldnt make any difference in a standard test ( when does the EGR actually do anything???)

As far as I am aware, the egr is only active in closed loop operation. I agree with baron, I do not hitnk it will effect a std emmision test.

Just had al ook in the service manual, if I was going for a compulsory emission test I'd take my chances, can't see it being an issue ( and if you saw the back of my engine you would undrstand why)

I can understand how you may be rebellious and against it all, but as far as the LAW goes, it's an offence. I disagree with all the tree-hugging hippy crap that is forced on us just as much as anyone else, but it's an unchallengable fact of life. Likewise, My car didn't have to have the EGR put back in, But I did, because at the end of the day, if you need to get it inspected, the mechanic has a 'tick or flick' checklist which determines if the car is legal. And when the EPA try to dyno test your vehicle, looking for the EGR (ie compulsory pollution control gear) will be the first thing they do.

If you are more of a risk taker than I am, good on you Baron. I played it safe as far as my vehicle inspection went, and thankfully, all they got me for was a non standard catalytic converter.

But you are not really getting where i'm coming from, but you nearly got there with "looking for the EGR (ie compulsory pollution control gear)". Is it??

    Hmmm

As far as I knew you can have non standard (hi flowed cats etc) that are legal, so they cant exactly get you just cause its simply non standard.
