Can a z31 alternator be swapped out with a z32

As the title says, my alternator in the z31 happily brings all my good batteries from 12v to 8v till finally the car dies.

I just put in a bit of sound gear last night (post dodgy alternator) and I have a busted z32 TT one I could get rebuilt to slide in and help with the sound system and keep the car alive since Im sure it would provide more amps then the z31's.

It looks doable, just need to change the pully from ribbed to v belt which I can grab off the dud one.

    Cheers mate

For a small fee if the housings dont match the sparky will tell me if the z32 gear can fit the z31 one.

Ill keep you posted, Im going to take it off now and see if ther z32 will slide in and maybe Ill take you up on that ;) just to get her back on the road.

I thought that the Z31 alternator was on the other side of the engine

It is ( hopefully I remember the 32 being DS the 31 is PS) but the housing still looks like it could work, but im basing this on just a visual and a measurement of the gap of the top mounting bolt.

If i need to mod or make the bottom bracket that should hopefully be no sweat

    Ok ill get into it.

Can you put up a picture when you get it out? I'm looking for suitable replacements for the VH. The alt appears to be the same except the mounts are slightly different, oh and the pulley but that's easy.

    Think I found my problem

Does this earth to the alternator housing? or somewhere else?

Well there is a separate earth on the Z32 housing, not sure if the Z31 is the same.

been told its highly unlikely this is the cause as its only a noise supresser. Dam it back to trying to take it out :(

do you happen to know the amps of the Z31 one?

The z31 alternator will not fit the z32 and vice versa.

There is a square plug, a small earth that is screwed into the housing, a positive that is bolted down using a nut.Your best bet would be a maxima alternator from another VG 3.0, the maximas have more amperage than the z31 alternators but you may have to use the pulley from the z31.

The following photos show my two alternators left is Z31 and rightis Z32

Besides the housing design differences front side dimensions the same

rear side view shows the harness goes in slightly different places but it all connected up

All the brackets and pulleys line up

So my conclusion based on swampman's statement is a previous owner has already converted my car to z32 because I give you the harness as used on my Z31

I can see that the plug/crimps were put there post nissan factory :)

Only problem i had test fitting my dud Z32 was the bolt for the bottom bracket to the alternator is too small, but hopefully Ill get the matching bolts from Chilled :)

    What do you think?

Can you tell me how to get the pulley off Im having a bit of trouble, is there anything reverse threaded?
    Cheers

Maybe i'm wrong i guess they do bolt together. My z31 alternator that came off my vg30et looks more like the right one. Mounts on the drivers side.

[IMG] The little black wire is the earth strap, the large one that bolts down is the positive wire, and the plug is for the dash lights.

Can you lock the pulley in place from the rear of the pulley with a screw driver or something? Other than that i guess you can drill 2 holes into the pulley opposite each other where a gap in the casting is and lock it in place with 2 bolts. If the pulleys are strong you could try a bench vice.

Never done it but I would assume normal right hand thread. Try a rattle gun maybe?

So far ive jus6t put the pulley between a vice and went to town on the nut I got a budge out of it eventually but then the thing gave me no more joy. I also noticed theyre both build different. One has a allen key center with a nut around it and the other doesnt, do I try to budge the nut first or the centre?

Hold the shaft steady with an allen key and undo the nut, right hand thread.

tassuperkart Its a lie I tell you!

Youre most likely to damage the pulley if you grab it hard enough in a vice to stop it turning.

The easiest way to remove the pulley when they get stubborn is to remove the back end of the alternator housing.
Then you can lock the armature up tightly in the vice and remove the nut.

It will also give you the option of replacing the brushes while your at it. So long as the slip rings are not too damaged that is otherwise they will need a quick clean up on a lathe.
While your at it, you might as well throw a pair of bearings to it as well.

Voila! You have just done a complete alternator reco.

Next time you do a recon on an alternator take some photos, i'ld like to see how it's done. Cheers.
