Have you tried fitting angle rings.

This may help you ,the rings will bring the gauges out some more away from the dash, here is a picture of the angle rings i have fitted onto my center stereo holder.

Rob, I bought my Auto Gauges about 18 months ago from a forum member in WA. I have searched high & low and can't access any forum posts back beyond May this year(and I'm stuffed if I can remember who that member is). He was offering them for sale in unlimited numbers, and had a link to a website showing them in operation.
Mine are white numerals on black background(and blue on black when instrument lights are on). They flash red on black when they exceed their user set limits, and have an audible alarm as well.
Someone MUST remember this Forum member. They are 52mm Dia, and about 40mm Depth(with neat plug-in wiring harnesses)and have STEPMASTER/SWISS on the dial face.
The Part No. for the Boost Gauge is AGBOSMSWL270-WB (270deg sweep).

Rob I think you will def be better off getting slimmer gauges that fit without mods and sell off the ones you already have... More mucking around, but will fit cleaner and save the dramas in modifying stuff :D

No Chris, it was someone else(he had a fairly simple web site and a forum name that didn't indicate any business connections).:zlove::zlove:
Unfortunately I had a computer crash about 9 months ago, and lost a great deal of stored info(including all my Bookmarks data).:(
