Of course it will, firstly you'll get a 12 month warranty at the very least. Any problems with it are almost certain to arise within this time. Aslong as it's a reputable shop that knows what they're doing, a rebuilt auto will kick the shit out a 2nd hand 15 year old auto of unknown condition. Now you have to take your car to somewhere who didn't supply you with the gearbox, as you said then having to pay labour. Whereas a shop who rebuilt it for you would do it all for nothing covered by the warranty if there are any problems. By the time you add up the cost of getting it looked at, and the real potential of it shitting itself in the near future a brand new rebuilt auto is the only way to go imo if you're deadset on staying auto.

You could always man-up and go manual! ;) lol (too late now I realize)

Good luck with it anyway, hopefully it's nothing serious...

give the guys you bought the auto from a call and tell them exactly what has happened. ask them if they have someone they can check it out for warrenty...they will probably say take it back to the guy who installed it. tell them i cant i dont have the money to do so as he will charge me to check it out, when installed everything was fine this is a week down the track...just explain to them how it is...and see what they say...

to me the fluid is a good point. it may have clogged somewhere in the line from your old box and pushing the shit thru untill finally it cleared up and passed through. people can be shifty though they could blame it on your cooler setup or something and try be dodgy...

Kool i plan to call Joe tomorrow and ask him what he thinks. I did some testing of the auto on the way home. It shifted quiet well. No signs of any problems like what i had earlier that day. Im going to be very careful atm and hopefully nothing goes wrong. But ill see what Joe thinks tomorrow.

Thanx for the help and advice guys.

Ok spoke to joe this morning and he was a bit shocked but said could be the clutch slipped or a seal got sticky or something and came good again. He suggested i continue to dsrive ti for now and see how the car goes. If it happens again i can take the car back and get them to check it. So now ill look into that RACV membership now when ive got time;).

I would strongly suggest you speak to the people you purchased the box from and who are supplying the warranty. If their is a fault with the box and you need to claim you have to make sure they were aware of the problem before you incurred any cost.

hey guys, it seems my auto problems havent gone away yet:(. Now ive been driving the car like a granny and it seems the auto will play up ever so often.

    Basically while driving and im either sitting at a set of lights/traffic etc or im crusing to a set of lights/traffic etc and i go to accelerate my auto will suddenly lose gears, like it will be stuck in 1st and wont shift into second. The car will have very little acceleration as well. Now when this has happened ive first tried to correct it by doing the following things;

1, manual put car into 1st gear with no change
2, switched O/D off with no change
3, switched Power & Hold modes On with no change

Now after all this, i decided to pull over and try turning the ignition off and then turning it back on and i found the auto would back to normal. Since then this is what ive been doing to fix the auto problem im having. Its annoying having to pull over all the time to fix this and i hate when it happens in heavy traffic. Ive tried doing an auto diagnostics from the tech guide but i cant get it to work. Dunno what im doing wrong but i cant get any flashing lights.

Now the last few days ive been driving with my O/D off and on to see if the auto will slip in this mode and so far no problems and the car seems to be shifting a bit better like this, but ive found it tends to pull abit when shifting up and down with the O/D off. But ive also noticed a few times my power light flashes 3 times when i start up the zed. Now i think this means ive got an error code in the auto but i cant run a diagnostic to check whats wrong. Im planning to take the zed, when ive got some cash to the auto specialist in lilydale but i thought id try and get a diagnostics check done first so i can relay this information to the auto guys or i can posssible fix the problem if its a dead sensor.

Any ideas guys and does anyone know how to get the auto diag. to work??

    red32 You talkin' to me?

Adam, go to the "Tech" section, activate the A-Z index, go down to "Transmision", search down to "Self Diagnostics for Automatic Transmissions", and take it from there! My bet would be a fault in the speed-sensor circuit! But it's a Zed... you never know!

Could well be an electrical problem, if you can get hold of conzult it would be much easier to diagnose as you can drive while monitoring the solenoid stats.

well it seems i cant escape this problem with my auto. I was pretty much ready to call tony at yarra valley auto to have him check my auto out and then today i got the scary sound of metal rattling inside the box when i put my foot down. I had to limp her home from footscary after picking up my sister from the train station.

Anyways i rang Tony at yarra valley and he seems quiet arrogent towards me. He stated the Z32 had really weak boxes and that the second one i had has probably done like 150,000 kms and been thurshed to shits and its what i get for buying that box. and no matter what i tried to tell him with my experiences ive had with the box be brutely told me the z32 box is just plain shit and everything gets burnt out.

I even told him i had Dontex service the auto but it didnt make him less arrogent to me about my problem and didnt really say anything to me that would stat the fact my auto is gone in his opinion.

Should i still take it too him or not. I think he seems abit bias to me getting a full rebuild done no matter what the circumstances are.

    BigCol That's what she said...

    Adam,

Without question I am led to believe he is the best at what he does but you will probably pay top dollar for it. Is he arrogant? Maybe. Does a company called Dontex mean anything to him? Nup. Does he care that you drive like a granny when the previous 148,000kms the box has been flogged? Nup. Would I trust his judgement? Yep.

I know for a fact that he does quite severe modification to these boxes. And he knows his shit. I rocked up in my car 5 years after it's last gear box service with different number plates and being a different owner, and he recalled the car (prior to inspecting the gear box). Not bad!

He will probably quote you for a full rebuild. But think about it - this is the only way he can provide any kind of warranty for his work. If he just flushed the trans fluid and it crapped itself on the way home you would go back demanding he fix it even though he did nothing to break the box. But if he rebuilds you will have piece of mind that the box will be sorted probably for the rest of its life. If you intend on keeping the car for years then it is always a worthy investment.

Look, you tossed the coin and tried to go the cheap way by replacing the auto with another box of unknown condition rather than rebuilding it so that you knew what you were getting. Unfortunately it sounds as though you might have lost that gamble. It is my opinion that a cheap fix is nearly always a great way to spend more money. Get it done right the first time and it will actually save you money.

Given your driving style, maybe there are other places you could get the auto looked at that won't semi-race proof it. Did Dontex have any opinion?

Thanx col, sry if i sound ungreatful but the thought of another huge amount of money on my zed was just to much for me to handle. Well when i picked up the zed from Donex and spoke to warren in person, i asked him what did joe think of the auto. and he replied its in good working order. I have been thinking about the full rebuild and yes i would love the piece of mind of that but can he do it for less then $1600, i dout it. Thats the problem i got no money at all. I earn $90 a week and half that goes stright to fuel. I was just not ready for this kind of problem wen i first brought the car. Im trying to buy brand new parts now and am planning a full restoration on my zed so this shit doesnt happen but until this auto is fixed i cant do that.

No problems! The only other advice I can offer is to get the mechanicals on your car sorted before all the add-on 2000 spec parts. I know how keen you are to make your car (at least visually) a 2000 spec car, but start with ensuring the mechanicals (engine, gearbox, suspension) are all 100% before hand. Otherwise I can just see you selling the car & all the 2000 spec parts cheaply down the track when the car breaks your heart and budget.

    More problems :(

Well my auto has started playing up again after 3 - 4 months of trouble free driving. Im having the same problem as before where randomly i would lose all gears and the car would just rev and gain no speed like it went into netural or something. Im differently considering a rebuild now and have budgeted for a $2500 build but what i wanna know is what can i do to upgrade the internals of the auto box so wear and tear is minial and lessen the chances of the box failing again.

Now i heard Doug (red32) say somethign about a short shifter kit or something like that what is it and can i get a auto shop to install one for me or do i have to purchase it separately???

A rebuild isnt $2500. If you are serious I suggest you give me a call. I have negotiated a good deal on box rebuilds with a reputable rebuilder in bayswater.

BTW his comments about the 300zx/patrol box is that it is built like a tank and with the shift kit its a pearler.

Yeh ive tried to do the self diag. but i couldnt get it to startup. I dont know if im doing it right, but ive followed the guide by the letter and it just wont blink at all. Its why ive been dieing for a tech day to ask for help but no1 is interested in hosted atm so i was just gonna wait. But now the box is playing up so i dont want to blow another box.
