    red32 You talkin' to me?

The same auto gearbox is fitted to the Nissan Patrol (GQ model, I think). Check around the 4WD wreckers, the price should be less if you specify the Patrol 'box. On the other hand, have you considered a manual conversion . . . should be able to do it for around the same cost (or perhaps a bit less) if you fancy a manual. Also canvas the forum for those who have already done the conversion and have a spare auto box lying around, un-used and un-loved!

    I am currently replacing mine

I got flooded and water damaged the clutch plates in the auto box.
I bought a box and cooler for $800 off another forum member, so allowing for somone to swap the boxes over another $500 ? its not so bad. Going to manual is costly to get it right, (ecu etc). There are boxes around, mine is a TT which made it harder but the N/A box should be around if you hunt and advertise. Tyhen get the shift at will from ESS Racing and you have one nice package, again.

ok i did some pming and ringing around. I got a cheap quote for a auto box for $550, and then got a quote on labour install which turned out to b $900 for 6 hrs, so im looking at $1400 all up which i can afford by myself. I believe this is my best course of action and im willing to take the risk with the box.

I was at Joe's yesterday, he said it was your torque converter that stuffed up. There's another zed there, belongs to Jetzx. Joe said he's having a manual conversion done so maybe you could use his old auto gearbox?
Also, how is it $900 for 6 hours? Dontex charges $88/hr unless he's including the upgraded oil cooler install time, changing oil in new box and cost of having your old gearbox pulled apart/ inspected.

Actually it is. They are charging me for everything in that $900. Thats 6 hrs labour cost. $120 for a standalone oil cooler and new oil replacement into the new box. Warren was surprised to know i found a box for $550 so yeh. I spoke to him and they wont charge me over christmas time to leave my zed there. Which is better as ill be able to save up a bit more cash in that 2 week period the shop is shut.

ok guys heres whats happening. I have decided to buy the $550 auto box. I checked it today and the oil was a light golden colour, andit didnt smell burnt. So the box is in good condition:). So ive organised to pick up the box tomorrow morning and then ill drive it up to Dontex Performance and drop it off. Hopefully it'll be fixed fixed just after new years. wish me luck guys.

    The Zed is back

Yay, i got the zed back from Dontex performance today, i am a very happy zed owner. Its been 1 month and a half since i last drove her and it was great to drive her again. Thanx you Joe and Warren from Dontex for fixing my baby, i have missed her so much over xmas and now i can drive her with piece of mind it has been fixed properly.

In the end the old auto blow up becuase my torque converter broke off and smashed through my box completely destorying it. Thank god for Dom at Holford who had a reasonably price second hand auto box for me.

Thanx for all the support over this everyone. I really appreicate all the help and adivce everyone gave me. I hope this doesnt happen again and i hope to see everyone on the new tech day/cruise in 08

Had a problem whie driving the zed today:(

After having the zed fixed a week ago, i had a bit of a scare today when i was driving to work. Basically i had been driving for about 20 mins when all of a sudden the car wouldnt change gears:(??. It was like i was in netural or something and when i put my foot on the accelerator the revs would go up but i had very little acceleration. I was worried i would break something if i reved the car to high, so i was just coasting down a main road at about 30kmph.

I immediantely turned into the nearest side street thinking i would need to get the zed towed home:(. But after i accelerated the car heavily a couple of times the car began changing gears again. Im at work now and will check my auto oil when i go back to the car after work. But i hope its nothing to serious. My mate at work said he had a simiular problem with his old car once before and it was no oil getting to the auto. Could this be the cauase for my auto not changing gears?? I know Dontex installed a standalone oil cooler for my auto.

Any others ideas on this guys, and do u guys think i should call joe and ask him whats wrong and possible have him check the car again.

first of all get racv total care. you will get towing included etc...

next i would take it back to the guys who installed the trans and tell them exactly what happened and get them to check it over.

You replaced an old automatic gearbox with another old automatic gearbox? In reality there is no way to tell the condition of it without cracking it open and having a professional look at it or in your case driving it and see if it messes up.

Yeah do what the lady suggests and just take it back to who did the job and get them to look at it and see what's wrong. The smarter thing to have done would be to just fork out the cash and get your old tranny rebuilt. The last time I got a quote for a full automatic rebuild was around 2.5k, so you wouldn't be that much worse off if you consider the fact that the gearbox you have just replaced it with will need a rebuild someday anyway.

read the thread before you go and suggest forking out 2.5k...he clearly mentions that he does not have that kind of cash atm and the z was going to stay off the rd until he came up with it which would have been a whileee...so he has chosen to go with a 2nd hand box untill he can save up for a rebuild...

The job will have to be done regardless with an older transmission sooner or later.

Over a grand to replace a 2nd hand gearbox with another 2nd hand gearbox that's going to need rebuilding one day anyway. Or 2 grand to rebuild the one that was in there and have a brand new gearbox that will last 20 years. You do the math...

personally i would either replace with a 2nd hand box, or if im going to be looking at spending that much i would do a manual conversion...

regardless adam didnt have that kind of money hence why he opted to go a 2nd hand box for now.

$1,400 is a damn good start to go towards a full rebuild, but do I agree with the manual conversion option instead. Bit late now though...

Cheers for the adivce Chad. Im sure the auto is still under warrenty as i had a 30 day warrenty from Holford. The problem is if i take it back to dontex will i have to pay for the labour in checking as im really low in funds im looking at $400 in the savings if im lucky. A rebuild is out of the question. A rebuild will not garautee my auto wont last as long as a 2nd hand auto. But i appreicate the adivce. That is why i posted this thread to find out what u guys thought i should do. I spoke to Warren before i left Dontex and Warren stated Joe said the new auto was working fine. So im not sure what has casued this problem. If it happens again ill get The zed towed home immediantly.
