Has anybody notice the massive increase in fuel prices recently...?... I mean this morning I paid $1.35 for Optimax... Obviously our government has no compulsion to use Asutralia's natural resources to combat these prices... So, looks like $2.00/ltr here we come!

Or is this a conspiracy to get everyone to use public transport which they've invested "so Much" money on?

When I get the car back

it will be a mix between public transport/car pooling and driving my zed (which will be most of the time).

A few things I dont understand

Pushing oil prices up too high will only result in people taking public transport, drive less and car manufacturers building hybrid cars, people converting to LPG etc so in the long term, I guess the oil companies shoot themselves in the foot.

The goverment has taxed our fuel at around 50cents per litre all up (excise and GST). So why would interest rates have to go up if fuel prices keep going up? I know they say its because we are spending less on other things but we pay craploads of tax already on fuel anyway!! Our goverment is laughing all the way to the bank anyway when fuel prices raise anyway!!

Also if they cut down the excise or GST or both on fuel, Australians will have more money to spend on other goods we pay tax on anyway So the government wouldn't lose all the money. And our standard of living would increase.

But considering higher fuel prices means EVERYTHING like food and anything that gets transported by trucks etc goes up, the goverment makes more money AGAIN on the taxes and levys etc applied on those items (tax on tax on tax etc)

I have a feeling that our government who gets massive salaries and fringe benefits (like tax paid cars and tax paid drivers with tax paid fuel etc (why even have a massive salary when everything is paid for anyway :) ) has become a tad out of touch with the rest of its citizens.

Still, here in Canberra we are lucky to not have to worry about road tolls, expensive car parking and a peak hour traffic that makes riding a pushbike look fast. I feel for yas.

    Bring on alternative energy...

The problem here is there are more factors to consider than bastard oil co's raising prices willy-nilly :(. Costs of extracting/refining oil are growing, as there is less & less of it. The closer they get to the bottom = the more dregs they're sucking up. Many wells are depleting @ ~8%/year. The oil companies don't really want to lose their profit margins either, which is understandable.

There's also oil futures trading pushing prices up, based on speculation re: supplies remaining, and more recently, hurricane Katrina. From what I've been reading we should see a correction in oil prices sometime soon, but it's debatable due to the looming "how much do we have left?" question.

BHP is suffering a loss from Katrina of around 25,000 barrels/day @ a total cost of $1m/day...which is nothing more than a pinprick for them :) according to analysts. So if that's what it's like across the board, it really shouldn't affect prices much.

I agree there is a serious problem though re: prices we're paying..which is made very obvious by this statement:

"Since July 2004, the oil price has risen more than 80 per cent. Although it is true that nominally the oil price remains below the all-time peak levels of 1980, it is sobering to remember that they are above 1974 nominal levels by a massive 75 per cent. The 1974 oil shocks led to a nasty recession and a substantial stockmarket decline."

Apparently the IR wont be raised until next year, and they have no reason to raise them as yet. I can't help much on that topic.

I'm not an economist, but that probably wouldn't be a sustainable solution? If it does bring in a lot of money for our govt. [which is then pumped back into the economy], we'd be losing out (less spending on infrastructure, environment, etc.). :(.

Would be nice to see a reduction in pump prices though.

Sucks huh. Costs will keep snowballing until they reach our wallets. Keep in mind that food production costs will increase too, not just transportation...ie. farm machinery/food processing. Lucky Coles/Woolies have decent buying power!

I personally wish they had introduced light-rail here on the Gold Coast now, it'd be a roaring success .

    Cheers,
    Rich

In Hobart even standard ULP is $1.35/L today :) (Not that you'd use it!

    It's about time the Govt:
    a) Took the GST off petrol
    and/or
    b) Pegged the excise at a fixed value per litre
    c) Used Aus oil resources at actual Aus cost of production.

Oh well, I suppose each 1c rise now is actually a much smaller % rise than it was when petrol was about 80c a litre.

You can save petrol - some of these ideas seem a bit lame but they do work:
Reduce cruising speed by a few km/hr.
Increase tyre pressure by about 5psi
Consider parking fewer times and walking to the car.
Try not accelerating hard from a stop (OK you TT owners might find that one a bit hard to live with!)
Check out and if possible reduce extra weight in your car. Example: drive with only 1/2 a tank of fuel - it saves over 20kg.
Be smoother in the way you drive. Slower application of accelerator and brakes.
I get 10km/hr+ out of my daily driver (a '95 Maxima which has the VQ30DE engine - like a VG30DE but with cam chain, alloy block and only one throttle body) using it for commuting only. I only use my Zed for country trips and I'm not happy unless I get at least 12km/l out of it (mind you, it is an NA of course!) driving to average 100km/hr point-to-point.

    i think you'll find

that the pertol we buy generally does come from our oil, just that oil everywhere is sold at the set price, otherwise everywhere in the world would buy it from whoever had it cheap until they ran out and they'd then be at the mercy of whoever had oil. the real thing that annoys me about the petrol price is that we pay the same for 95 octane as what you guys do for 98 octane

you are correct, tassie .. what many do not appreciate is that petrol

prices in australia could be halved tomorrow simply by the removal of the "parity pricing" policy which many do not rememeber or would not even be aware of nor, possibly understand ..!!.. apart from the double dipping via excise and gst .. the higher the price the more duty/tax dollars ..!! .. you do not need to wonder why australia is having massive surplus budgets ,, half your answer is the petroleum rip off ..!!

which reminds me of the definition of politics ..:

    "poli" from latin, meaning .."many"

"tics" .. "blood sucking creatures" ..!!

    :angry::angry::sick::thumbsdown::sick::sick::(:(

Excise tax is fixed at 38ยข / litre

it's the GST which keeps climbing. IMO they are playing into the hands of the biofuel lobby which actually may not be a bad thing in the long run.

Something needs to happen to put an end to global warming:angry:

Baz, just heard little Johnny on the radio about fuel prices taxes levies parity pricing and it is too difficult and would be unfair to "artificially" reduce the petrol prices. And he sounded so sincere. God bless his little soul.:thumbsdown::thumbsdown:

thats what I was thinking! Is it seriously THAT much of a problem that you guys are thinking of stopping driving the Z? It's not like you don't make #Times as much as your weekly petrol bill anyway.

jeeeez ..how bloody pathetic is that ...!!!! it wasn't too difficult to

introduce parity pricing, just as easy to remove it ...!!
..and "unfair" ..WTF ..?? unfair to whom ...??" and "artifical" ..holy sweet j, parity pricing is a totally artifical for christ sake, simply a mechanism to artificially raise the base price and so increase the tax collection .. he really is a heap of horse shit ..!!!

and did you see him on the 7:30 report tonight.. ?? totally lost and inadequate trying to explain away the current telstra stuff up .... !!! real despair material.

    What does Johnny care?

he gets chauffeured around in tax paid cars driving on tax paid fuel with a tax paid driver I bet. Its no wonder some politicians become out of touch.

When they brought in the GST they PROMISED it would replace all other taxes. What the hell is the 'excise'? Sounds like a tax, and sounds like the government trying to have it both ways and laughing to the bank with our hard earned $$$

I must admit I laughed when he said 'its not fair to artificially lower the price'' wtf!?

Also, unless I dont drive the zed AT ALL for a month at a time, public transport here would be only a fraction cheaper for all the hassle it provides.
