I'd certainly put it on a new post for a tech day, once you have gotten all the goodies you need, depending on the car and if it has really had a 100k service that would be the first lot of parts to get, then the under plenum bypass bits, ie: egr delete kit, new hoses, iacv hoses, etc . Plus all new fuel hoses, clamps etc a new fuel filter, maybe a new fuel dampener and regulator .

Pretty sure there is a list of all that's needed somewhere on the site or web.

Thanks again Scotty, I will search for the list but I do not intend on doing any bypassing or deleting.. I want this 'ole girl to remain original for as long as I can :)

    Cheers Brezzo :)

I dont know how you all felt when you first washed your Zed but today I certainly fell in love all over again :zlove:

I can't say for sure but I may of band-aided the fuel smell. I tightened all that I could and I think the offenders are the fuel filter and the hoses that start to run towards under the car near the battery tray. I took her for an evening drive and noticed the lack of fuel fumes even when I parked her up

One thing I am starting to notice more is the occasional rough idle. She idles at around 850rpm and then shakes like she's about to stall. I did think about what sort of spark plugs she has and the thought of the PTU crossed my mind but I'm hoping nothing will happen until I can take her to PZP or hold an almighty Tech Day.

No warning lights have made an appearance, only today after her first wash I went for a cruise and at the top of the street turning left the HICUS light flashed one ever so quickly, by the time I looked down at the dash it was gone and i had turn the corner. It hasnt flashed since.

    ECU Diagnostics

I do have a question about this procedure.. sorry

I am familiar with the flashing codes as I used to do the same thing with my last vehicle. We used to call it the 'paper clip' test where I'd place the two ends of a paper clip in separate pins in the diagnostic plug and turn the ignition to begin the flashing.
My question is if I do the same 'paper clip' test with the 300zx do I turn the ignition first and then place the clip or do i need to have the clip in first before turning the ignition?

I'm referring to this thread http://www.pexcom.com.au/z32cms/e107_plugins/content/content.php?content.418 ..as I do not have a 'push to make' switch and I'm a touch confused. Sorry for the noob questions
..I'm just keen to see if indeed I do have any codes stored.

The 'push to make' switch is only a contact ON, only when the button is pushed in. As soon as you release the button the contact is broken.
These small switches can be purchased at Jaycar or similar outlets.
According to the instructions: ignition - On, connects pins 1 and 2 for three seconds to get the engine check light to flash.
From there on learn to read Morse code.

At some stage its handy to get an EcuTalk cable (around $110) and an old laptop (win Xp) the software is free.
You can see and do much more include clear error codes.

Regarding the deletes: you'll be very glad you did them especially the under plenum water bypass and EGR delete.
All the small hoses under the plenum are a ticking time bomb with these old girls. We don't get the snow here in Oz to need heated throttle bodies.

    Opps. I missed that one.
The Zed gods do require a blood sacrifice when working on them, someone else's blood will do.
You have not had to correct my spelling for a long time. Either I am getting better, or your slipping.
C'mon Chili.... Lift ya game. :D

Thanks for clearing that up Brezzo :) so the contacts for pin one and two only need to be connected for 3 secs to begin the morse code while the ignition is on. It doesnt need to be connected all the time during diagnostic. Understood :)

I see what you mean with the deleted plenum water hoses.. mine still has them and have a sort of 'calcium' build up around the hose clamps. I'm guessing also the car may run a touch cooler? Is there a specific kit for this bypass and it would probably be something I'd do on a forthcoming and much needed 'Tech Day' :D

I do plan on getting an ECU talk cable in the future but I need to prioritize fixes and get the major work done first before I lash out on accessaries.

Cheers again Scotty... I'm currently reading it

Today I approached my Zed expecting the sweet smell of octane but to my surprise.. nothing. Not like the day before where I would stand 5 feet away and smell the fuel fumes.. hmm. maybe its a good sign, maybe she already knows I'm here to look after her and behaving herself lol. Still, will be renewing as much as I can in the way of hoses, filters etc.. Just so I know where I stand with her. :zlove:

As for the ecu talk, one of the local guys should have one, see if you can meet up with them and run a checkup on yours. See what pops up, clear what codes need clearing and what stays so you'll know what to fix etc.

Mate thats an excellent idea.. But i have not met anyone from the forum yet, and only just missed out on a cruise the other week.

** So I'm putting this out there... if anyone in PERTH would like to meet up with me.. share a beer or two and have an ecu talk and lappy I'd be more than happy to arrange a suitable time **

If there is a calcium build-up then the bypass should be moving up on the priority list.
With a hot summer comes the added pressure on the cooling system.
I think the "plenum pull" article you are reading also covers the bypass, but if not there is an article in the tech section that does inc picture guide.
If the pic links are broken (sorry some are not the best) then google z32 water bypass.
The water comes from a pipe at the back, goes under the plenum, and connects up to the water side of the turbo. One each side.
Here is an alternate site that also covers this.
    https://z32.wikispaces.com/Coolant+Line+Bypass
You'll see what we mean with all the hoses in this pic.

You seem to all into this so I'll leave you to the steep learning curve.

These cars are like "Christine" while you throw money at them they smile and behave themselves. Soon as you stop they will bit you in the wallet

Cheers for your time Brezzo :) I will be studying this and more no doubt.

I'm one to not worry about getting my hands dirty and may look at doing the plenum pull on my own but doing it a first time would maybe like some more experienced owners to maybe stand by and give me tips and tricks while the work is done.

Thats a classic movie 'Christine' and I'm one to believe that every car has its own personality and 'spirit'. I'm currently trying to 'sense' out a name for her as I do with all my cars.. I have a HZ GTS that I'm restoring called Hazel, the previous car I owned was a Vauxhall Calibra 2.5V6 called Veronica - I learnt a lot with that car as I did much of the mechanical work myself. It wont be long till I find the right name for my new beast.

LOL. I, and a few of my fellow zed owners here have several harsh expletives we call our cars that I cant repeat here as it would get me banned for a month for using bad language.
You can see the names I have for my cars on the bottom of my sig, which is also a link to view them. (self promotion :) )

When your doing the plenum pull, mark and label everything, and take your time, don't rush it.

Time is not a problem round here. We ALL started where you are and this forum has always prided itself on helping not flaming.

So this week being xmas and all... I have limited funds and trying to decide what can I do to the Zed with them.

Maybe an oil change with new filter? ;)

What oil types are you guys using and where in Perth can I find the right oil filter please? I like Penrite oils and use them when possible. Another question that comes to mind is Do you use engine flush?, which one?

Will be ordering from car craze too in the next hour or so,
that will knock out the fuel filter and the door actuator...
just to be sure about the fuel filter.. is this the right one?
