I just did some numbers and came up with an engine speed in excess of 11,000rpm to move a manual TT at 300/hr. KEEP DREAMING! Someone prove me wrong? Oh and the working... 18" wheel with 45 profile tire gives rolling diameter roughly 1718.208mm. Based on 3.69 final drive and 1:1 fifth gear I came up with engine speed 10737rpm at 300k (previous 11000 was based on a 35 profile and 3.7 final drive). Now lets assume your engine revs that high (and it won't!) it would require a HUGE amount of torque for your engine to reach that rpm whilst dragging a car through the atmosphere (resistance) at speed...
Seen over 220 in mine... while toying around with a probably 750 motorbike of some kind. He thought he would live me standing still but..... not so!!!!! For me the most amazing thing was how quick and how effortless it did it. Looked at the speedo and OMG. It felt like it was in its element with HEAPS more in reserve. Never done it since, will never do it again. And when I hear TOPGEAR going on about top speeds of 320 or so... WHATEVER... With boost and some ECU tweaking, I can't see why a Z32TT can't hit 300. The June one in Bonevile did what 420 something??? But at the end of the day, a street driven Z will not see anywhere near 300 unless on the race track. Std boost, high flowed turbos, 2.5" exhaust and YES AUTO::zlove: And I wasn't even wearing rose coloured glasses.. Peter
I hit in excess off 200km (by not much) in my NA manual. Was doing a bit over 6000rpm as far as I can recall. That roughly equates to 9000rpm at ~300km/h in 5th with an NA diff. TT would be higher ratio, so lower rpm. I have had a big day today, so am most likely wrong, but I think it'd be somewhere just north of the rev limiter in a TT
More maths... Final drive is 3.64 right? So above figures will be a little off. Anyway point is based on 3.64 final drive,1:1 5th gear and 18" wheel with 45 profile tire... We get top speed of 223k at 8000rpm. Remember guys mechanical speedos and guesstimations lie!
final drive is 1:0752 not 1:1 Axle ratio (TT): 3.69 stock tyre diameter 24.858 1st:3.214 2nd:1.925 3rd:1.302 4th:1.000 5th:0.752 6800rpm : 180mph 289kmh 7000rpm : 186mph 299kmh 7200: 191mph 307kmh Think the point missed is the amount of horsepower required to get there.
You've got your numbers wrong. 5th gear 0.752, diff ratio 3.692. I used 285/30/18 7000 rpm = 185.51 mph = 298.54 kmh 7500 rpm = 198.76 mph = 319.86 kmh 8000 rpm 212.01 mph = 341.19 kmh 300 isn't out of the realm of possibility. Cd = 0.32 A = ... 30ft? V = 180 Power = 480 hp... I think A is actually lower than that though but its a starting point and 480hp isn't that much anyway.

I've had my aus spec past 220kmh before on a long stretch of private road ofcourse, doing around 5-6k in 5th gear with the na rear end. Still felt like it had more in it.

In the states When they first tested a 90' mod TT against the Vette. It hit the limiter (250kmh) No problem. For some reason the yanks got a much higher limiter than the jap spec ones. When mine was not running the best and only made 195kw it still did 260kmh. I have no doubt mine would run to 280 possibly 290kmh, and it aint modded nearly as much as some others on here. 300 certainly aint out of reach. Not saying we should be doing those kinds of speeds. But to say they won't do it is rubbish. If my 540,000km old vn v6 crap heap can still do 195kmh on lpg I have no problems believing a sports car which was intended to go fast can do an extra 100k or so. I'm not trying to defend the zed here as trust me I am over them. But one thing they are if set up well is fast.
Just want to add my bit here, everyone is assuming the manuals transmission is going to go faster, I have stayed auto for 2 reasons, 1st because I am lazy, 2nd because at hiway speeds its top gear is a better ratio. 1st: 2.784 2nd: 1.544 3rd: 1.000 4th: 0.694 Rev: 2.275 so power and torque and all other things not considered the auto should (mathematically) reach 300 with more revs to spare. This final drive is why I prefer the auto for the long drives.
Here is the easy way to workout the speed of your Z at red line in 5th gear. Note what speed you are doing at say 2500 rpm in fifth, then to get the speed at 7k rpm just multiply the speed you do at 2.5k by 7/2.5 i.e. multiply it by 2.8. For example say your Z does 107 kph at 2.5k rpm then it will do 107*7/2.5 = 299.6 at 7000 rpm. (I can't remember what the TT Z does at 2500 rpm but I've done this before and it came out to 300 I think either that or it was 280 or maybe that was the NA, but it was at least 280 at 7000 rpm). This works because the relationship between your rpm in any gear and the speed you are doing is linear (assuming your clutch isn't slipping). For example double your rpm and you double your speed. This isn't news to anyone who's a mechanic is it? As for actual top speed, my Datsun 240K could hit 175 km/h but couldn't quite hit 180 kph. My Datsun 260Z (with about 152 hp at the crank) could hit 180 kph (I think I got it up to 185 kph - it was a long time ago but it was definitely over 180 - on a Brisbane freeway racing a Jag). If you were describing my old 1970s 240K or 260Z you would be spot on. The Z32 NA Aus delivery version has the speed limiter set to 230 kph (now why would they do that if it can't actually get there). People on twinturbo recon they can get their NA up to 240 - 250 kph with the limiter removed - from the chip). Yeah they could be lying but that gels with my own NA experience of around 200 kph and still accelerating (westbound coming out of the sharpest curve on the Sydney M2 racing a holden). Now from dyno's I've seen the typical NA has around 120 kw at the rear wheels (i.e. loses 45 kw in the driveline). Now you want to tell me that my TT Z32 with more than 240 kw at the rear wheels (i.e. twice the NA) (not hard to achieve in a TT) will struggle to do 180 kph ?!?!?!? struggle just like my old 240K and 260Z with a fraction the power struggled. MY Z32 which eats 6 litre V8s for breakfast (and dinner) struggling to hit 180 kph?? The times I have being doing 180 kph in my TT Z my vision was still being distorted form the Gs I was pulling (usually done overtaking on James Ruse drive - up the hill). Any one with a TT Z struggling to hit 180 kph is driving a very, very different beast to the one I drive. Do I have the only fast Z, are you guys all stuck in safety boost or something, what's going on? Your as wrong about the top speed as you are about a Z32 needing to do 11,000 rpm to hit 300. By the way its entirely believable that the slot car red lines at a mere 224 kph. It would mean you have different gear/diff ratios than stock. Indeed that will give you max accel at the drags gearing it like that but that has no bearing on what a Z32 with stock gearing will do.
Hi Rob - purely cosmetic Hi Rob - to answer your question The 300 Kmph Speedo idea was because people always say that thing must go fast, they then look at the Speedo and go - only 160, thats slow!!! I know the speedo means nothing about speed potential, personally I dont intend to go past the speed limit myself, but the 300kmph Speedo would at least give them the imagination and stop them rubbishing my Z because it only does 160kmh (in their minds). My only concern is as Chrispy pointed out, the increments are not fine enough to read. I would say that given many people have the 300kmh speedo, they might have come across the same thing (except those crazy enough that actually want to go to 300) The best speedo pic here so far is Brock32's - anyone got something close to that in terms of cool/ hot looks or unique dashes - was hoping to get some cool pics of dashes in this thread. Anyone got a good pic of these rings with white face. Anyone got the customised face and patterned, I heard they were pretty good from a forumite here Cheers all Linda :zlove:
