So you are actively converting to the vq30 ? I wasn't sure if your top pics were a trial fit or what. Eagerly awaiting finished product and dyno figures :)

I can see both pros and cons with this.

OK, you get a more modern engine, but you lose your soul. It's not a 300zx any more. You might as well put a V8 in, and then you at least join the V8 club, but you still don't have a 'real' 300zx any more.

On the other hand, you still have a 3l V6 that hopefully works the way it's supposed to work for a long time. Just don't open the bonnet and show anyone what's there.

it's a 3L V6 Turbo, just because it's lighter and has more room in the engine bay, doesn't mean you don't have a 300zx! :)

    2001 Nissan 300zx...

I can see where you're coming from and I agree to some extent...

But you can look at it from a different perspective.

One of the cars which have the VQ30DET is the 2001 Nissan Cima. If you backtrack this car down several models to the 1988 - 1991 you'll see that that model had our very own VG30DE and a VG30DET. Nissan, like a lot of other japanese car makers use the same engine for several different cars during that year, not just one.

Which leads me to believe that if they ever released a new model 300zx in 2001, it probably would of been powered by this VQ30DET. After all, the 350z made the jump to the VQ series with the VQ35DE...

So really, you can tell yourself that you own a 2001 Nissan 300zx. :)

And like you said, it still has the same soul in a 3l V6 made by Nissan. It's just the original VG30DETT soul went to heaven; found out there was no more room up there and got kicked out. Then became reborn as a VQ30DET. :D

    Cheers
    Rob.

thats a bit flawed, if it actually matter it's a turbocharged 3L V6.

the arguement of it n ot being a real 300zx anymore could apply to any modifications

    Well,

To a lot of people it will be a lesser car. It may be a 'better' car but still not the real thing. Most of the Z32 stuff centers around the engine, at least around here.

It is a bit like a SIII Jag with a V8 conversion.

Don't want to knock you Tom, cause it's a seriously good idea. I'm just a bit of a purist.

Hey it's all good Stef, we aren't getting into a fight here... it's good to get different opinions on the subject anyway, that's what forums are all about aren't they?

We're still going ahead with it and still planning on some big things in the future for the VQ. Aftermarket parts like cams, springs, valves, pistons, etc are readily available for the VQ and I'm hoping to expand the market with some more items like aftermarket plenums, etc.

    Time will tell...... :)

it mightnt make a difference to those in the know but it may add to the stigmata of the vg30 being a "weak\crap" engine once all these v8\vq conversions are finished, But thhen i recently saw a vq powered r32 and its got me thinking lol

    Same!

my mate had been talking to Tom a while back and then came to my place and said "Toms thinking of doing VQ's into Z32's for around $5K drive in drive out.

I'd missed this thread, and said "BS.... that must be the cost of the engine only"

then i find this thread dug up :gasp:

OMG if this comes off, at around that price, I would be soooooo interested when my motor dies....maybe even before it dies given you could easily spend them much in 2 years just keeping a VG based zed running.
Keeps it more original "Zed" than any V8 upgrade imho (not that there's anything wrong with V8's)

Well the project halted for the last month due to a huge amount of work on at PZP however I've hired a casual mechanic to alleviate some of the pressure and give me more time to tune cars, complete complex jobs and further some product development. :)

I've organised the transmission adaptor to be made and we may even have it in out hot little hands by the end of the week! This means we can continue with the custom crossmember and we should have the motor mounted within the next week.

We've also put some PZP silicone hoses into development for all of the pcv, idle and coolant hoses so when we get around to 'refreshing' an engine before it goes into a Z, it will have all new hoses, gaskets, etc and ready for a long lasting life!

Hopefully I'll have some pictures by the end of the week!
