Z32 VQ30DET - a replacement for your tired VG???

    Hey guys,

Check it out, I've just planted a VQ30DET into my drift Z... I think PZP will be venturing into these conversions soon as a replacement for tired or blown VG30DETT motors. The cost of rebuilds aren't getting any cheaper and the cost of parts are just getting worse, especially with the whole economy bizzo!

The VQ30 has great power potential (500rwhp with an un-opened bottom end) and it's new technology... They're easier to work on, inexpensive to upgrade (engine doesn't have to come out for turbo upgrade), plus you can bolt on a big single T3 turbo and blow any RB away... Oh and did I mention it's about 35% lighter than a VG30DETT???? :)

I'm currently working on a custom cross member so they'll sit lower in the car, plus a custom bell housing so the Z32 box will bolt straigh up... Then all I need to do is get everything engineered/road worthy... Hopefully we'll be able to offer a drive in drive out conversion in a matter of months!

    Anyway, here are some pics:

500rwhp without opening the bottom end is awsome...

love this, keep the progress pics coming ;) ;)

yep, proven too... not just forum talk!! there's a few guys I know of with vq30's in their s13's... running 530rwhp and one guy has put over 2 bar of boost through it! :O

Thats awesome... will the bonnet have to be modified at all? looks like it sits a bit higher than the vg... Also do you have a ballpark figure for the cost of conversion?

Nice work Tom, have you thought about the VQ35 aswell? Or is it not feasible? (I know they dont come turbo'd, but surely it wouldnt be too hard to stick on in there somewhere)

    What about a VQ30DETT?

Pipework could be frustrating with the intake design, think its just easier to go single. I dont think theres much you can do with twins that a single cant do.

Where it sits in the picture is too high for my liking... there would have to be a bonnet buldge there to fit the standard intake manifold in. I'm looking into custom intakes and lowering the whole engine about an inch too.

The cost of the conversion is not yet known. I'd like to make it available for about $4500 including the engine (drive in and drive out).

Yeah I have looked into the VQ35DE... compression ratio of 11.0:1 is a little high but apparently it still likes almost 15psi and doesn't have any problems. There are TT kits and 9:1 piston kits but they're big dollars. My main aim is to bring out an alternative to the VG which is newer, lighter, stronger and has the potential for more HP than the standard 300-350rwhp out of a boosted VG30DETT.

P.S. I still love the VG, i'm just looking for modern alternatives that has better compression than 120psi on all 6! :)

It can be done, it's just the amount of piping, cost of turbos, etc.... There isn't really much point. You can have a VQ30DET with a big turbo and a less cluttered engine bay for less $$$'s and less worries!

ditto... the intake would be frustrating and the pipework a nightmare. A big single would come on boost better and give high top end with a few more pounds per square inch! ;)

$4500, mate tom book in my brothers Z asap lol.

Btw, for the vq30det would you need custom made mani's or will the vg turbo gear fit? might sound stupid but i know nothing about the vq apart from the fact that its newer and lighter.

great idea Tom, dont know how you can do it for that money though.
Will be watching this with interest, shame its a ugly looking motor though....

We will just wait and see I suppose! :) It does look a little ugly however... add some polishing or put the big engine cover on (ill post a pic) and it'll look a little better! :)

Could it be done with out customising the cross member ? Might be a silly question as why would you if it can be done without :p with a custom sump, just thinking that it would make certification easier.

The Gloria Y34 CVT Automatic sounds intersting.

The Toyota Yaris has a CVT type and makes it drive like a golf buggy, one long gear, takes the engine noise and shift feel out of the driving experience with a sort of sterilizing effect. Not really what you want.

But with the elimination of torque converter loss and better use of available power through ratio changes. see page 5 http://www.nissan-global.com/PDF/tcvt_e.pdf

It could be useful in a 1/4 mile car.

Apparently they are a 6 speed steering wheel mounted button shift.

But I imagine a CVT would be not suitable for a drift car, sorry for drifting of topic :p

    NA conversion

would the price be the same to convert Na's to VQ30DET? I dive to perth to have it done rather than rebuilding a NA motor. Also what is the VQ30 out of originally?

If it's a kit we can just get it shipped over and we can do it in the shed, wouldn't take too long to swap over, less than a week if we take our time.

    I want to play

Single T3 turbo won't do anywhere near 500whp and is old tech anyway, GT35R should give close to 500 and be very driveable.

Be interesting to see if a big single turbo will clear the frame rail, from memory the sump on those motors is very difficult to modify for clearance purposes. But you are having a go, good on you :)

I'm keen to use mine as a test dummy, after finding out more first.

I've been playing around with cross member options and it looks like the S13 cross member is the goer... I'm yet to try the R32/R33 cross members but they all clear the pan a lot better than the Z32 one....

I've been told that the R33 cross member makes an RB25 sit a little lower than an R32 cross member. I might have to look into that as bonnet clearance is what i'm after. :)
