just checked for physical spark, it is present but really really weak and inconsistent

checked another cylinder, same weak spark was present so it wasn't a one off.

unwrapped series 2 ptu and checked connections, all looks fine. had somebody crank it while I wiggled the wiring about, no change.

checked 3 earths at the back of the plenum that we undid previously, re-bolted them after a clean and still no go

feeling it's an earth, where do the coil packs and ptu ground?

Have you looked at the ground wires at the ECU end where they all meet . Good idea to hit that with some heat and solder it .

it doesn't make sense for those to have failed while the car's been on stands, but a good general tip none the less that I intend to do sometime.

this is starting to annoy me. need to get the car running so I can pull everything apart again and tuck the rest of the bay! only 1/3 of the way done at the moment.

I saw the weak spark you're describing on a Zed once, it was the ignition coil relay in the engine bay fusebox causing it.
If you've been moving that fusebox, check the connections to the base of the relay.
Or - because Zed - try swapping the relay, if you don't have a spare then use the aircon relay as a test mule.

I got really exited when I read that, went out and swapped relays around and still ****ing nothing. NOTHING. doesn't even COUGH

are there any inconsistencies with the relay colours? as in, each green base must have a green relay, yes?

Yes. I moved two earths from that area further forward to where the carbon canister was. The bottom one is my hid high earth, and my high beams are working...

Should have mentioned this before. Code 55.

Everything I did during the tuck has been documented with pictures in my build thread if anyone wants to have a crack at it...

which of those can I check with ecu talk? that's all I've got access to

    thanks btw.

as a temporary test, try jumping the ignition coil relay (bit of wire with spade connectors on each end to join the two pins on the relay socket that are normally open when the ignition is off). crank the motor over (or turn the CAS manually) to see if the spark has improved.

Weak spark is definately your no fire symptom. I had it as well when I moved some stuff around the engine bay as well, code 55 as well. Turned out to PTU wiring related if I recall. You can try to directly ground the ground wire from the ptu harness straight to the plenum or even to the neg terminal to troubleshoot a grounding issue with the PTU.

Coil relay as Mick said. All of those under relay connections probably really didn't like getting moved, and wouldn't be surprised if there's an issue there. If the wiring all has continuity from the relay terminals, then you can try bridge it to rule it out as well.

I got frustrated at not being able to get it going, so I've continued with the rest of the project and now there're hoses and wires everywhere. I'll report back when it's reassembled.

This is exactly my problem has anyone come up with a solution yet

    misszen Red ones go faster!

    Yep 2nd that from andymac-

I went through exactly the same thing a while ago with weak spark and it wouldnt go and it was likewise - after some unrelated work on the car, it took me a long time to work it out (felt like forever) as I went through everything and thought that even the weak spark it should have fired and I was convinced it was something that I played with, but it also turned out to be the PTU - - never again said I - I upgraded to a series 2 and said I would never use a stupid series one again (was a big headache the whole thing - I had even replaced the AFR by that stage (it's now my dummy/ and standby AFR for my dual intake) given the relocated the PTU this would make sense as well
