20deg IIRC for the VVT. Don't think it would cause this sort of problem if the base cam timing is correct. I would be checking that before going much further.

Where in Brissy are you? Might come round with Niall if your nearby.

My first move is to disconnect all non essential sensors, this includes VTC solenoids.

He's in wynnum i think, bit of a trek for us chris

Yeah - any help would be appreciated :bow2:

In Lota - just south of Wynnum/Manly, so it is a bit of a haul to get here - although Andy is worse off :p

Will get the cam timing checked tomorrow - pretty sure VCT seemed to be working OK on datascan, but its something else to check out. Any ideas or suggestions are welcomed:confused:

Any ideas on how blocking the Balance bar off would improve it? Thats the best we have had it running....

Only that blocking off that balance bar would dedicate the IACV to that bank only, it's definitely sounding starved for air.

It actually completely blocks the IACV off totally - where it has a gasket into the back of the plenum, is only a chamber that feeds up into the balance bar - which runs along to the centre of the balance bar (can't find a pic to explain it)
By blocking the balance bar, the 2 sides are running completely independent of each other bar the AFM and air filter.....as though the one side is starved of air - so is breathing thru the balance bar....

Only thing left to check IMO, is cam timing, either the T/belt is out or inlet cam shaft has rotated say 30 - 40 degrees.

Mark alluded to this with his reference to 'cam lobe broken'; I think he meant cam spigot.

Andy also suggested this and it would certainly produce the symptoms you have. Gavin Wood has recently fixed another workshops stuff-up wherein the timing was 40 degrees advanced and yet the motor actually ran... similar to your dud bank, very poorly!

Good luck for the weekend :zlove:

    And...

I think you may be able to compare relative camshaft positions at #1 TDC if you have another Zed available, also at #1 TDC via the oil filler.... ?

One of the tests i intend to do is a vacum test, if we block off the balance pipe and vac test the faulty bank we can prove late valve timing

    Good

So we'll expect you, Zed32TT and Chrispy at Gympie for lunch Sunday :zlove:

    Fuel in the plenum

Gotta ask yourself 2 things right here.....
    How & why.....

Are you 100% sure that the air intake side of things is all clear and that the actual throttle IS opening ???

    off topic foot note:
Had a mate with sort of similar issues, turned out to be a wasp nest that had blocked off a good 3/4's of the intercooler cores.... the cooler had been in storage for a few months whilst the engine build etc was done, he fitted it up and had all sorts of dramas in solving the problem, we couldnt see the effected core area when looking into the pipe connector but once we shoved a mirror in there .......
 farkin nightmare that one !!

I think AndyMac is on the right path with the blockage idea & you've even confirmed it by creating vac leaks and getting a "better" idle etc......

I dont know if this will work, but as a simple test at this stage of desperation ....
have you tried dropping off the hoses from the throttle bodies, effectively turning the engine into a N/A engine for a test run .

This will show 2 things straightup.....
1/ that the throttles are actually opening....
(if one throttle is stuck shut, you'll get fuel in the plenum because it will be sucking it from the other side via the balance pipe )

2/ that you have airflow through both sides of the system.
(again, a blocked side will mean that one bank has to get its air from the other side.... )

The only way fuel can get into the plenum is by being sucked back up from a point past the injectors, there's only 2 ways this can happen...

a massive vacume created by a blockage
    or
    incorrect cam opening/closing

a combination of both posibilities perhaps ??????

    the plot thickens :bash:

FREE BEER FOR MARK AND NIALL!!!!!

Thanks so much guys, for everyones help.

The culpret was a broken intake cam pin, causing about 15 - 20 degrees advance of super gay timing. The questions mark is, how did it break? iv had the gears off twice during the course of the build and the pin was DEFINATELY there then...
not out of trouble yet, just in the process of rebuild.. but highly confident!

    CASE CLOSED

That's the second I've seen now. Weird...

I've got both TT auto intake cams here if you need them.

    Great result!

Well done ALL. Don't forget AndyMac's input: when all else was said and done, Andy persisted with advice. :zlove:

Free, I was going to chuck them.

Not too sure on the condition as they've been sitting in my box of bits, but you can have them if you come and get them.
