Interesting, this shop seems to be doing both, maybe the removed/refitted or whatever list is for that but the point still stands the engine damage that I saw after the crash is not listed at all and yet the suspension parts all are.
Weird, Like i said though maybe they have qualified mechanics to do the job. Keep in mind your average panel and paint shop would have removed there fair share of engines and engine parts as they do paint engine bays and stuff, we have pulled a few engines before. but they wouldn't go as far as replacing your heads or something like that. i think your worrying a bit to much, it should all be fine, if they pop the bonnet and see the state of a Z engine and STILL think they can do it then they must be pretty good.
As vizard said most panel shops outsource the mechanical side of things, dont be surprised if it gets trucked to them then a mechanic to have that side of things looked after. A mate recently had his blown VZ SS repaired and the mechanic that it went to did an abortion of a job and tried to retune the car (bad idea). Anyway it cam back and went back to his usual shop and all minor things fixed and retuned but still it got sent to the wrong person for the job. get onto the panel shop and see who they use for mechanical repairs and go have a chat to them yourself
I see. now I'm getting somewhere. I'll call them tomorrow and my insurance company as there are 3 300zx specialist shops up here and I'll try to get my car taken to one of those. I don't want some random mechanic touching my baby. [TIS]
these days some smash repairers that do alot of insurance work hav e mechanical department too, and some of them are quite good. its fair enough that they are only replacing 1 spring and shock, other wise where does it stop. if it does sit lopsided at the end of the repair im sure they will put a new spring in the other side. you might be able to have the engine work done at a specialist for example but probably only if the repairer agrees. the mechanical and chassis repairs are normally done better by people who work together.
Keep in mind ANY WORK done to a car at a shop does NOT go through until the insurance company approves it. The shop inst just going to start pulling things off the car and painting it until the insurance company confirms the work. Also, regardless of weather you want a z specialist to do the work or not, if the insurance company wants to use the cheaper shop then they will. You may have to pay more excess if the z specialist charges to much.
Thanks for all the info guys, I do worry because in the past shops have told me they know how to do a job and then have no idea. I'll have a talk to them because after the crash the engine was smoking and power steering fluid everywhere, it really does need inspecting and on the list of things that were inspected theres no report of any engine damage which has me concerned and there were unidentified vacuum hoses all over the road, unidentified because I've replaced any obvious ones with red silicon and these were black. Also white smoke from the drivers side throttle body area, I'll run Conzult over it when I can. I've found Zed mechanics to charge much better prices than random shops as they know exactly what they're doing. The car is fitted with show polished alloy intake pipes/turbo outlet pipes with the silicon joiners, after the crash I noticed the gap between the two hardpipes sealed by the joiner was smaller and the silicon compressed, this along with the smoking and power steering fluid shooting out everywhere is why once again I'm worried because theres no mention of these listed as being fixed. I only just replaced the high pressure power steering hose 2 months ago. I agree about the shocks, really if its a problem I just assumed they would replace both rears so they match.
So I seem to have made my car better... by crashing it. ITS BACK cos I like it.. The repairs..... Respray, all new panels including bonnet and front bar, undertray and suspension adding up close to $7k
Looks good Alex. It seems like they did a good job. Which shop did the work? Good to have you back on the road.
Thanks, it was taken to Maxbutts, at Ashmore near Nizpro, by my insurance company. I was worried but they did a really good job. I have four pages worth of work detailing suspension arms that were all snapped, aircon was ripped apart the list is huge. All parts were imported from Japan, and nearly the whole front of the car resprayed.
MMMMM - MMMMMMMMMM .... Its peculiar how when you see something that you really like, you KNOW instantly that you really like it! Thats a sweet combo you have there and I am drooling. Its a strange touch but I have to say that the buper strip actually works! WTF? Congrats, I'm giving you a 10, love your work.
