I had similar problems on my drivers belt, apparently it's to do with some

crazy Jap system that has a solenoid or something in the belt mechanism so when you buckle up the belt it stays somewhat loose over you...

Anyway, there is a connector under the seat that connects to the seat belt buckle, that is all part of this system.... Try unplugging this !

    Cheers,

    Matt.

    I remember years ago

reading that you actually use more fuel at idle then you do cruising. So their would actually be a negative benefit to fuel consumption if you did this.

Its just a habbit, not trying to save fuel or anything

But the car still shouldn't do it.

    happened to me too

somtimes i would take it out of gear while coasting to a red light, so dropping from 2500rpm car would just hit like 300rpm and stall, das would light up like a christmas tree!, 2 ways of getting her started, turning key, or putting it back into gear and the engine would come back to life!!
once it even happened in gear, going down a hill, all of a sudden engine just turned off, lit up like a tree again, tried to turn onto a side street to realize my steering had 95% locked up and could barely turn, had to slam on the brakes as i was heading for a gutter.
god damn that was scary, but its never happened before or after that time..

    If it's a habit, it's a bloody bad one.

It's about as dangerous as you can possibly get, short of reading the newspaper while you drive.Quote from mafi-zed...
You have next to no control over the car in an emergency (it's a practice that was used by "truckies" to overcome the speed limiters while going downhill. AND IT'S ILLEGAL AS WELL!)
Spend more time learning to drive, and less worrying about your idling.:rolleyes:

    Forgot to mention

    Its illegal too. :)

Besides, the zed will like you much better if you dont coast it in neutral all the time.

Used to do it ages ago, but figured the car was not designed to be driven that way so stopped. I never had any problems with stalling though even at speeds of 110km/h. The idle was more erratic though but not that bad.

Try adjusting your idle to idle a little higher perhaps?

Barry, if your car is parked on a slope (fore & aft, or side to side)

the belts will lock until the car is on more level ground. There is a counter-balance mechanism in the belt reel that actives this function.

what makes you think the zed doesn't like to coast in neutral?

    Cause

Had a look at the water temps - it goes up
Idle (when coasting) is erratic (wasn't bad, but idleling normally the needle didn't move at all)
braking performance reduced, much more dust on the wheels
Had to keep putting it back into 5th as the car kept slowing probably pissing off the cars behind me.

In the end, the cons outweighed the non existant pros IMO

My Zed has a rattle in the rear end

that only seems to happen in the cooler months, i guess it might be the nylon bushes retracting. i thought they'd be a little better than that. any ideas?

it tends to blow shit loads of white smoke too, also drinks shitloads of petrol. but it's messing up the St Helena Safeway Carpark at this time.

Simple fix for the bonnet issue

unscrew the rubber lugs at either corner of the bonnet and bring them up a centimeter or two so they push the bonnet upwards more, and it will pop up better. If they're shagged you can buy new ones.

problem with stalling on cold start

hi guys. my car i think has busted o2 sensors. the main thing is that when it is cold it idles badly and will sometimes stall. when it is warm it is fine. my dad reckons it is a problem with the automatic choke or something. any ideas? also what is the warning light on the dash on the top left of the section of warning lights that has the abs light in it ( on the left of the steering column)

    thanks

More amazing revelations about the Zed, that is the maddest yet.

    Can it be bypassed/removed?

    Cheers, mate

    What's this noise then?...

Finally got around to getting the old alarm system out, so I am in the shed, its nice and quiet, lots of trim removed, binnacle cover, consoles, etc, and then I hear this ticking noise somewhere up in the dash. Its not part of the old alarm because all that is out now.

Now I have noticed it, the noise is very clear and regular, say every two seconds. Like a switch going on and off.

It never stops - does the Zed have a heartbeat?

    Cheers,

    Barry

Re: Irratic Idol when I take it out of gear above 60 km/hr

This use to happen to me when coasting to a red light. I have a tendency to brake late as well . When I brake late, I don't have time to down shift to keep the revs up thus coasting to a stall.

What I'm doing now is to brake earlier and start down shifting. Yes it does feel weird at first changing your habit from a coaster to a down shifter. If you can't get use to down shifting, check your idle adjustment as Shifter said.

Once you get your idle checked out, you should be able to coast without stalling. But do try to keep it in gears. :)

This coast/stall can also happen above 60. I stalled it at about 80-90 with the idle fixed. And when you stall, you lose power steering so you better hope you're on a straight road or have damn strong arms to control the car
