Gday, just wondering what the cost and what would be involved in setting up the zed as a track car.

ive thought about it and come up with:

Brake Upgrade - stillen race setup around $4000
    Perspex windscreen/windows - ???
    racing tyres- ?
    weight reduction - DIY
    roll cage-
    race seat-
    suspension costs
    strut bar's

Im really looking at what the cost would be and is it worth it...

in the future the GT performance cup would be a great aim. certianly a 350z with track setup would be nice...

    any input???

You need to pick your category.....>>

Before you can fully cost the car as different categories will require different setups. Some categories will not permit the fitting of aftermarket brake kits or perspex windows. Strut bars are also a no-no unless installed by the manufacturer in a lot of categories, along with exotic suspension upgrades which can keep the cost down, but make "factory race cars" like the Evo 8 an attractive proposition.

    BRAKES

yeh i diddnt think that far ahead.

just a thought in the gt production . if they cant upgrade the brakes how to they race 12 laps flat out and still stop...the average ZED has brake fade after a couple of laps of hard braking...???

GT production must use factory cars no older than

2 years or something like that so the 300ZX is out of the question though the 350Z would be possible.

Improved production might be an option but the 36mm restrictor ...>>

and zed weight might be an issue.

    With the right pad compound.....>>

and good fluid zed brakes are not as bad as some people say they are, of course you can get better results from bigger kits. To the best of my knowledge pad compound is free in just about every form of motor sport going, and with some ducting heat fade is minimised. I regularly get 6 and 7 laps around tracks like Sandown without any problems on my modified stock setup.

    Forget it

Factory 280mm rotors are no where if going circuit racing. A few laps is one thing but racing is a different story.
phatdiablo you also needs lots of money and time and a good zed workshop.
You can have some fun doing Super Sprints and racing the clock as such and won't cost too much to set up good track car for this. They are normally only 3 or 4 laps.

But John, how about standard sized Brembo rotors.....

slotted with a good pad setup, e.g. a top range EBC pad.

    Max:thumbsup:

    Yes good

324mm is miles better than 280mm and if the DBA 4000 heat treated and slotted with their Kangaroo Paw webbing better again. EBC pads are not the best for racing. They work OK but don't last and there is way better pads that work better and last much longer for same sort of dollars. Their Green Stuff Pads are for cars UP TO 750 kg and the red ones are better but not much. Brake ducting helps also. I just bought some proper brake cut flexible hose that is 2000c heat resistant 3 inch for rear and 3.5 inch for front.
Also the series 2 Zeds and above and R33 GTR and R34 GTR V Spec have the Nissan thick rubber brake deflectors for brake cooling on front.

What pads recomended for track work?

Went to Wakefield and chewed mine up.

However most wear was in the first 3 cm and the second half was barely touched. Piston problem or normal?

    On their brochure

Have a look on the back of the EBC sales brochure as this is exactly what it says. Also from our experience years ago at the track they wore out in 30 to 40 laps which is pretty ordinary. This was on Zeds and GTR's driven hard, not pottering around. This was the Green Stuff Pads. The brochure I saw was on display at local B & R Brakes recently. They work OK just ware out way too fast and they are NOT dust proof like they claim. This is sort of, what is it an oxymoron?
By they way anyone out there got a Zed lighter than 750kg?

    According to their website....>>

The EBC Green pads are not for track use. Quote from EBC site..

Triple award winning EBC Greenstuff pads are now available in an upgraded AF44/78 formulation for most European cars, again ECE R-90 compliant, yet the new formulation offers higher thermal conductivity and therefore reduces incidents of brake judder, better cold braking and better wear life over previous EBC green formulations. EBC Greenstuff is an excellent fast A road pad for all road legal cars, but is not for track day use.

That could explain why you had problems with them on the track. For the track EBC offer a range of pads starting with Yellow and ending with Blue, which is for track use only and not road legal.
