    Hey guys,
Now I tried search, and I dont think this has been asked before but...
Im looking to buy my zx REAL soon, and well to save me the hassel of buying an N/A now, and a TT when im 21, i just wanted to know...
Is it possible to make a 300zx TT UNDER the power to weight ratio?
In my inspection of a few Z's, owners have told me that their particular examples were under, so P platers could legally drive them
They couldve been bullshitting, but I just would like to clarify
Id like to stay legally on the roads....like to doesnt mean I will though :D
    Thanks in advance
    James
ps. Warnings about 'if' I get caught probably wont deter me, but you can try if you like :)

    few options here.....

1, pack your boot with bricks

2, get yourself an elephant as a friend

    3, remove the turbos.

Lol, on a serious note however, i dont think it will be possible to make it legal for a P plater, as the write out of cars on that stupid list has power to rate for that specific car from the factory. They dont go testing and weighing everyones individual cars to determine if its legal or not. It covers the model in general doesnt mater if your running 1psi of boost or 20.........

sorry mich gotta dis agree with you there. victorian police have the authority to get your car weighed and put on a dyno for the p platers. im yet to c if i can add additional weight to make the tt heavier so i can drive it

It has been asked before, and its over power to weight. I have a 2+2 manual, the registration sticker says it tare weight is 1600kg. So to have 125 kW per tonne, a 1600kg car would have to produce 200kW.
A TT zed is more over the 125kW/tonne. Its 220kW stock. So you are over the limit, but as I understand the penalty for being caught driving a car over the power to weight limit is really minimal. I think its a fine, no demerit points lost. There's a couple of P platers who drive TT's in Vic and they haven't been caught. When most policemen pull you over, they're more concerned with getting all your defects, so its rare for them to get you for power-to-weight. My friend (19) has been driving his parent's RX8 around for more than a year now and he's been pulled over plenty of times (once for speeding) and they've never even said anything about power-to-weight.
But if you want to drive a car thats over the power to weight legally, I think you have to prove to vicroads that all the cars your family owns are over power to weight, or that you have permission from your employer to drive the car for work purposes. (my dad owns his own business ;) but I still bought an NA coz its somewhat cheaper to run).
You can still insure your TT, but I'm not sure about what happens if you are responsible for a crash and they discover you are driving a car that you are not allowed to drive. But if you tell the insurance company you're driving a TT, and they agree to cover you, you'd think that they'd cover you in the event of a crash?

if thats case if you know your car is under you could force them to prove that its making that power making it illegal... they have to if you ask, ie. asking them if they have a tape measure to see if your cars illegally low:rolleyes:

considering that the car is ~15years old i doubt its makin stock power if its running stock boost, but yes i imagine you could get someone to tune your car, generating less power... decreased boost, probably similar to a safety map with a leaner fuel mixture rather then rich.

as for people telling you its under... odds are they were bullshitting.

dont alot of people on here have them even tho theyr not sposed to be able to drive em?:p

I didn't know they could dyno your car to find out? Isn't the power to weight ratio calculated on flywheel kw? If its RwkW then car's like the WRX would be well under power to weight? Same with a stock TT zed.
Seems a pretty stupid idea to dyno your car though. Most people would just detune thier car wouldn't they? Or would they take it to a dynotuner who could figue out what the car's real potential is?

Well im currently on P Plates and driving a TT, been done once for power to weight, was like a 150 fine or something... wasnt a big concern for me. Its well worhth it haha :D

nope, you can ask for your car to be weighed and dynoed under your own expence if they think its over power 2 weight. but if they chose to dyno it, for example if you have a lancer(which you can drive with p-plates), but worked off its tits, and producing like 300rwk and have a massive front mount, they ask for it to be dynoed. and they take photos of all your mods and compare it to the day of the dyno. everythin hase to be the same or they expell the dyno and you get a bigger fine.

And do they consider Flywheel kw or Rearwheel kW when calculating the power to weight ratio of your car from the dyno result? Because the wheel kW are sometimes 10 to 15 % less than flywheel kW so would they just add 15% to work out your flywheel kW?

flywheel kW is what there interested in

I'm sure there's ways to get the boost to go straight out the wastegates instead of to the eingine. Would kinda be a waste but would mean you are effectivly running a NA.

So you have to get this measured at your own expense? Cause measuring flywheel KW means you have to take the engine out and hook it up to a dyno, not a cheap operation at all.

Free dyno testing? Hell I'd lighten it up as much as I could and get it done, aslong as they give a print out after the jobs done of course... Then simply get it registered in someone elses name and just get listed as a lisenced driver for your insurance. Free dynos for everyone, yay! :p

    Ok cool
yeah I dont think I'll worry about it, but getting an N/A might be better because of the cost factor...but then again the power...hard decision
I have a friend who also said that P platers have a restriction on turbos specifically, nothing to do with power..any truth to that?
Im just trying to get the facts before I make the biggest purchase of my life (so far) :D

I don't know what the laws are in vic, sorry :(

Someone else said you get a small fine, but you'd have to ring DMV or whatever it's called over there to be sure.

chill out for a couple of years, get a cheap car for now, then when you're old enough and you've saved some money for maintenance and mods get the TT.

i drive a TT and am in vic and on my p's. got done once for power to weight ratio, paid a $150 fine no demerit points.

This isn't good advice, but all they do is fine you $150 and don't let you drive the car home here in VIC, I copped that fine a few times when I was on my P's.

A stock TT isn't under the power / weight ratio, Skylines are over by 1kw and 180sx sr20's are under by 3kw (that was proved in court when a friend went)
