Guys, I think my gearbox may be on it's way out. symptoms: Weird tapping/rattle from gearbox at all revs Weird vibration above 2500rpm It just....doesn't feel right. Thoughts? I haven't given much info but I'm not exactly a mechanic as you all should know well by now. Cost? Anyone know the cost of a new gearbox + labour to fix? All info appreciated guys, thankyou. -Josh P.s. Can I still drive it with the weird sounds/rattles/vibration? Stupid Q, but I have no choice.
definately sounda like its comin up straight from the gearbox mate. But yeah, sweet, thanks for info. Know anythin bout costs involved?
How's the oil look? Changed it anytime in the last 20 years? I wouldn't be driving it too far unless I knew what was making that noise...
An automatic I suspect? Bad news man, if so then the chances are that it's screwed. You'll find that most cars with the original automatic gearbox, especially from the '80s are totally shagged. You could try giving it a service, but I doubt it will make much if any difference. Should you drive it? No! lol When it goes totally, which it will, you wont be going anywhere. Dont expect any change from $2,500 for a full rebuild and labour for an automatic. I'd would suggest to convert to manual, but the chances of finding a manual transmission for the Z31 are extremely slim. Hell even if I had a spare manual I still wouldn't sell it to you because they're simply that rare! It's just one of those things, if you buy an older automatic car and it still has the original transmission then it's only a matter of time before it lets go. A fully rebuilt brand new automatic will last another 20 years though if looked after properly and built strong.
Ahh you're a lucky man then! Not many manuals getting around these days... Go look on your build plate and tell me the transmission model number, let's see if you got the kick ass one! The magic number you want is FS5R30A, if you got that then have a party because it's got the same internals as a Z32 TT manual. The problem is they're still damn expensive to get rebuilt! Yours must of had a hard life I suspect to let go, I've got 245,000kms on my FS5R30A and it's still going strong.
Remember i blew the doors off the boosted gtst at the same time lol, good times indeed thats why u cant sell it mate.
I'm worried Have I had a manual conversion! :bash: ? This is all the info HGZ31330009 KHGZ31JATMC 326B E4N71B RC35 X Next to that ^^^ plate, is a little plate that says "Built Nov 86" but on another plate it says 6/87? anyway, whats the go?
Oh dear! Your car was originally an automatic, it's been converted to manual! What a shame, thought you had an original manual there for a second. Now I dont know what to tell you, in theory it SHOULD have the FS5R30A manual if whoever did the swap knew thier shit but you cant really be sure now without looking at the transmission itself. I'm sure it will be stamped on the side somewhere...
Previous owner doesn't know! He was told it was an original manual... Odds are that it was converted before importation
If it does have the FS5R30A it's both good and bad. Good because you have the bullshittly rare, tough as guts manual, even if it's not original it's still good to have. Bad because they cost alot to get rebuilt. The real problem is that it was probably half flogged to death before it was even put in there. It takes alot of beating to break them especially on a stock car...
