Hi, can anyone please suggest a z mechanic in Perth???

I recently had the engine pulled out to replace knock sensors, wiring harness rebuild and since the engine was out replace anything that otherwise would be impossible to get to (meaning everthing)..... and just as I was starting to enjoy the full power of my car it's gone back into limp mode. It's booked in to get fixed on the 19th, 2 week waiting period to get it looked at again!!

I am well aware of the 'reputation' of the 300 but there MUST be someone out there that not only knows the car but can fix it too???

Is it too much to ask that when you take your car to a 'performance centre' and pay a substantial amount of $$$ that your car performs when you drive out?? Or that when you ask for advice on performance upgrades you don't get 5 different answers??

    Please help!!!!!

Wow seems you could have used this forum sooner.. nice looking Z btw!

We have a tech day coming up in Perth.. we could all have a tinker. :) otherwise Zrated here on the forum has turned his tinkering into a business.. I assume with decent rates?? on the other hand, it could be something simple that could be sorted out here and now.. I assume you mean safety mode with lower boost etc?

If you don't trust us Z obsessed freaks and want to go to a mechanic that knows the Z, prestige motorsport in wangara have had heaps of Z's through their workshop. I'd leave that as a last resort though!

As for recommendations on performance upgrades, businesses will typically tell you what they know and it usually isn't much unless they're a specialist.

I'd recommend doing your own research as there are a lot of options and most of what you need would have already been answered here so make use of the search facility.. twinturbo.net is also a good resource.

In any case, tell us what mods you have already, the level of upgrade you're after and we'll most likely be able to help.

Has it gone into "limp home mode" or "safety boost"?

Limp home mode means that it will basically sit in 3rd gear on an auto box and won't use over-drive from memory. Safety boost means it will change gears as normal but your boost will only go up to 7 instead of 9, though if you have a boost controller this might be hard to tell. Run an ECU diagnostic on both the auto box and the main ECU. Just need a paperclip for the ECU and the auto one just involves playing around with the gear stick.:

Passed by your blue beast on albert st in osborne park a few weeks ago. Very nice! :zlove:

If you want help with your car, Tom (ZRATED) is definately a good port of call. Also, try and come up to Scottie's Tech Day and there will be plenty of willing helpers :D

Come on the cruise on the weekend too. Go to the Coming Events section and have squizz :D

    Cheers

Sorry to hear about your car troubles. As everyone else has said, PM ZRATED (tom), he will be able to help you out. As for the Z's reputation, well old cars + poor maintenance + high performance = some problems. Once they are fixed however, :D :D :D many good times lol.

On a side note, your Z looks very nice. There seems to be several really nice zeds in perth that I have never ever seen before, where did they all come from & where have they all been hiding?

I hope the plans for a "supercruise" come to fruition soon.

Thanks guys! Will definitely get in touch with zrated/tom. I'm not sure what mode its gone into but its running really rich like ... i'm only getting 250kms outta one tank, idling rough (i think its hunting or something?), and it feels like the turbos aren't doin much. The gears seem to be fine. I think it might be the boost one.

I'm hoping that when i take it back they'll fix it, as it will be under warranty but i don't plan on going there for future work. And there is no way i'm going to start snooping in ecu's with paperclips etc .... hahaha i can just imagine ... like seriously how many chicks do their own diagnostics etc? I know where everything is, i have an idea of what everything does, i even know how to open the bonnet!! but stuffed if i'm gonna do it myself.

I'll try and make it to the tech day ... i'll just have to get details ... and as far as trusting 'z freaks' hahaha i've taken my car to the supposedly 'top performance centres' in perth with little to show for it, so theres no issue there.

"engine pulled out to replace knock sensors, wiring harness rebuild"

was there meant to be a comma in there? was your engine rebuilt or just the harness fixed up?

indeed welcome its a shame you didn't join on a better note. Well as most of us will tell you we have all had are fare share of problems and experiences so come 2 a tech day or talk 2 tom

from what you just said It might be a boost leak. after they had the motor out its quite possible they didn?t tighten all the clamps up properly and you have simply blow a hose off. From what I understand as I have never had it happen 2 me the car wont boost properly if at all and it will run really bad because the air ECU is confuse about where all the air is going/coming from but im not a mechanic so don?t take my word for it :p

I took it firstly to a shop in osborne park, my work is on main st so i'm in the area everyday and its close to home (carine), then i took it to o'connor, they both have speed in the name so i thought it would be the right place to take it ;)

They said they had to rebuild the wiring harnes because it was all cracked and melted and stuff... dunno .... they said not to bother trying to get a second hand one cause it'll prolly be in similar condition and new ones have been discontinued (as you might already know) which i can't understand why when its a known issue with the z's.

Its definitely related to the knock sensors because i had diagnostics run on it at the workshop and the knock sensor error came up again. And the way its running now is similar to how it was running when i first went to get it fixed.

I think the boost controler has helped because before it used to stall when idling now it just runs rough.

haha waztted at the moment i wouldn't even take on an excel with a bodykit (you know bodykits make them go faster!!) but once she's all fixed up ... watch my points fly :D

How much did they charge you for rebuilding the wiring harness? You can still buy them, they cost a bit though:

    http://www.courtesyparts.com/z32/z32_oem_popular-engineelectrical.html
    http://www.conceptzperformance.com/...trical&CA=41&UID=20070207214105202.154.74.180

Same with knock sensors. They are still for sale too.

So, they said the knock sensors were causing the problem, they replaced the knock sensor and the harness and the problem is still there? Id go back and make them fix the problem. If I were you, I'd expect free labour as a minimum on whatever they fix.

Kk well when the knock sensor triggers or stops working it freaks out the car so it retards the timing, turns down the boost and probably another couple of things witch would make the car feel underpowered and sluggish. it can be jerry rigged with a resistor but you should try to get it fixed and if they both had speed in there name it could have been 'Xspeed' and 'Speed works' they are not 2 bad they are just expensive and often don't like working on the zeds

And when they say the rebuilt the wiring harness the probably replaced the plugs and damaged wire as I think the only place you can get a new one is the US but if it still dosn't work tell then 2 fix it at there cost

Performance upgrades are usually done in stages with each stage removing the worst "bottleneck" in the system as it goes. Here's a couple of sites to look at.

Yeah the knock sensor problem will be fixed by them and i'm not paying for labour.

I wanted to buy a new wiring harnes found one in us but can't remember what the difference was when i told them about it they said that it might not be the right one etc i asked them if they could source one etc and they said it would be easier to fix my one...

Thats just proving my point again if they spent a little time looking into it (and being in the industry i'm sure they would have known where to look to find one) i would have bought a new one and this would have been avoided and to top it off i said to them that i don't mind paying for their research time or for new parts cause i know that it would save me in the long run! I think the plug they replaced on the harnes is faulty.

But as far as new mods, when i bought the car it did have some work done to it, first thing i did was take it to speedworks, asked them to do a full inspection to see if there is anyting wrong with it and to tell me exactly what it already had done. Went to pick it up and they handed me my keys and said yeh shes all good.... then i said ahuh but whats been done to it and the guy goes i'll have to check with the mechanic... go figure.

I know the exhaust has been upgraded but how am i ment to know whether its from cat back or from engine, then what about down pipes etc. or for example i've fitted the front mount intercooler and i think it came with intake bits so do i still need hi-flow intake?

I guess what i'm tring to find is someone to look over what my car has currently, help out with planning what steps i need to take and then fitting, maintenance etc but who actually cares about what they're doing.

    Is that like unreasonable?

ZRATED sounds like just who you need. Knows Z's and wont stuff you around. Otherwise come to scotty's (ZWEET) tech day on the 18th of FEB, I am sure that everyone will be happy to give you a hand and help diagnose what they can in the meantime.
