Hi i am looking at putting thermo fans on my car as the old plastic fan shroud got caught in the fan and broken into several pieces. I can get some thermo fans of a falcon for free i am pretty sure they are 2 10" fans side by side. So do you think these fans will cool enough or should i be getting one big thermo fan? What do you think? Any opinion is welcome and greatly appreciated.
Replace the shroud if you can - the stock viscous fan is ideal. How did the shroud get caught in the fan?
I really dont know how it got cought i was driving down the highway and noticed my temp guage rising :-( so i stoped and half of it was stuck in the fan.
Stick with the viscous fan. No matter how good a thermo setup you install, it will ALWAYS be playing on your mind that it could fail without notice. The slightest rise in your temp gauge and you will be pulling over to ensure they are still operating.
Late model falcon thermo fans might be a winner. Get an aftermarket temp gauge and you should be good. But dont bother if you have fmic then youre asking for trouble.
Thermofan is good if properly set up. Took a bit of fiddling to get mine right but finally working well with 56mm twinpass radiator, 16" spal fan, and UAS fan shroud. Heaps of $$ involved though. If I was you I would just fit another OEM fan and shroud, and maybe replace the fan clutch for the hell of it while everything is in pieces.
I've got a set of EL Falcon fans waiting to go on and I expect them to work fine (after all, if they've got no problem cooling a 5-litre V8 then a 3-litre V6 won't be an issue). They won't fit if you've got a TT though, there's not enough space between the intercooler plumbing. You'll need a large single fan if that's the case.
I'm a strong advocate of thermofans, although there are more horror stories than not. I have a 16" davies craig fan on at the moment with a 16" SPAL waiting to go on when I do a system flush before it gets too warm out there. My fan is turned on via the ecu and attached to the low speed sub-fan relay, and comes on at 80 deg, off at 75 deg, and off at speeds over 100km/hr. Sub-Fan high speed kicks in at 95 deg. Since I've done that I've never seen temps hit 100, even hitting the hills in summer with air con on and I only expect better once I put the SPAL fan in, as the craig fan is an old straight blade monster with massive hub, so flow isn't great.
Thanks heaps for all the opinions! At the moment i am looking at putting thermo fans on as i don't want the same thing or something different to happen to the OEM fan. will 2 10" thermo fans be sufficient to keep it cool enough? Oh by the way its a TT. Thanks again.
I havn't investigated the setup, although someone around here has used the dual 10" ford units from the falcadore quite successfully, but yeah, I, and a few others can recommend a succesful single 16" setup that works, but you'll have to dig deeper for dual 10". Give it a go, be a pioneer, etc, etc. If it works, great, if not, back to the drawing board.
can you even fit dual thermos on a TT radiator (being smaller than the NA unit)??? My 16" Zirgo virtually covers the entire width of the TT radiator
