Either your Cats are disintergrating (needs immediate attention), or your mufflers have Steel Wool packing which is now falling apart. Both need to be checked asap.
Less likely(but not impossible), some clown has shoved steel wool into the exhaust to try and get past a noise test, and it's now coming out.

    gotta be

mufflers or possibly someone shoving steel wool in there, hopefully the latter or you'll probably need new mufflers. Having examined cat guts in the past I'm sure that wouldn't be it. :)

you dont necessarily need new mufflers,

    sometimes this can be repaired.

    true

I had the pipe replaced in mine but with the low price of them these days I probably wouldn't bother.. I think she also wants a different sound so not all bad, it may also be a contributor to being down on power.

It's the stainless packing coming out of your muffler

The perf tube on the inside has obviously cracked or rusted through.

You will need a new muffler
