Hi people, Still a newb to these prestigious cars but I have read that with an Automatic gearbox, as the throttle is constant right through the rev and speed range if need be, so therefore a BOV choice is either pointless or is all down to the sounds they make. As many people have said this is not important on an Auto, I want to now draw your attention to my main question. Is it possible to remove and plug off the stock BOV's and vac lines (that go to BOV) to allow the intake to 'compressor surge' or ''dose''? I do not use my car for racing or thrashing around, it's my daily driver. I am just looking to make it stand out. :-D I would appreciate every single opinion, advice how to do this, criticism or suggestion. I am trying to find out if this has been done, if so, what affect did it have good or bad (on the turbos), what did it sound like, does it at all compare to an RB engine's compressor surge sound? Links to Tech articles or how-to's or even previous threads about this. If there is no way to make this ''dose'' or even ''flutter'', I have a Plan B. Thankyou very much in advance.
That's what I had a feeling about, hence including my question about affect on the turbos. Thanks mate.
Just do a search for dosing or compressor surge, its been talked about a lot with lots of opinions. Also you can have a bov on an auto, its just not going to blow its load every time the auto changes gears like in a manual. Our cars tho have metered air and once you vent to atmosphere you'll run rich. This is why our cars have recirculation valves which vent the air back into the intake tract. There's better places to get cool noises from imo starting with a full exhaust upgrade.
Yeah mate I'm aware of that. As I said it's my daily so I have a cat-back N Power system. Nice and deep. Love it. Yeah well I will probably buy those Z1 BOV's that recirculate. My stock ones are starting to flutterdump.
1. Yep, its possible, you'll need something to bung up the 4 holes you're going to have once you rip those Recirc valves out and something else to bung up the lines that goes to the Plenum from the Recirc valve. You'll get your flutter, though only after planting your foot hard then letting go completely. 2. It can also be done if you have a BOV with an adjustable spring and setting the spring to be on a hard setting (meaning it'll only open up when boosting hard). For a manual this'll be ideal to sorta have the best of both worlds, having minor flutter in low RPM / boost scenarios while still Venting / Recirc'ing while shifting at full boost. But for an Auto, I'm assuming the effect you'll get is only vent / recirc when you finally let your foot off the accelerator after planting it hard. Either way, if you have stock turbos and boost, you're not gonna get the same flutter as out of a modestly modded Skyline. Theres a few factors for the difference, but I think its mostly because of the extra piping we have in our Zeds, along with generally lower boost and smaller Turbos. Effect on Turbo life? This is always going to be debated. My own opinion is if kept to low boost scenarios I don't believe it will cause catastrophic failure any time soon (stock Zed Turbos are dirt cheap anyhow, I have 2 just sitting at home I can't get rid of lol). In relation to our Zeds my OWN belief is less then 9 PSI (stock boost, yea I'm aware its 9.5 but for simplicity's sake...) I would be comfortable having compressor surge. Higher then that, I want the air to vent or recirc (vent AND recirc in my case because I'm such a BAWS! :zlove: GFB Hybrid BOVs lol ). 3. I'm curious, what is plan B? Oh and I love your Sig... "Boost Lee"... MoulaZX
Hey mate, thanks for the reply. appreciate your very detailed answer. My Plan B is to purchase a pair of Z1 direct replacement BOV's that can recirc or vent to atmosphere via a simple screw on screw off fitting for the rubber recirc hose. Same dimensions as stock BOV just looks much different. Comes with a cone shaped trumpet screw on attachment for when you're not recirc'ing. I really have a thing for flutters and dosing though! Also, I think these BOV's might have an adjustable spring! Yay!
