Probably been asked before but I couldn?t do a search without the old forum.
Anyway, the point why I?m asking is because a mate of mine in his skyline got pulled up and defected yesterday for having a ?filter outside a box?.
What?s so illegal about that? It cant be emissions because the filter companies claim better economy with a pod, and it doesn?t take a genies to figure out that better economy = better emissions.

Oh well lucky ours are nicely hidden

It's not the exhaust emissions that are the problem it is fuel vapour emissions that can leak out back through the intake when the engine is shut off. The boxing of the filter is apparently to trap the vapour so that it will be sucked back into the engine next time you start.

I may be wrong but this is my understanding of the law.

    sounds a bit far fetched

but wouldn?t surprise me if that was their excuse.
Well turbo cars should be exempt from that anyway because I can?t see the vapours travelling through all the turbo piping.
    Sorry just having a whinge

    induction

most of the problem is in induction noise level, take older fords, holden, that have carbies, they have no air box to so call trap vapour,, place after market filter on it, you could be done for induction noise, pods do pick up the sound level a bit, most times you can't hear it over the zorts anyway. which is bullshit rule anyway. they just dont like people moding cars most of the rules and reg are made by people who have no idea on how to change a tyre, let alone deciding what we can and can't do to a car,

    vapour???

i have never heard of this vapour before.

what i have been told is that the box is there so that the heat from the engine doesn't increase the intake temp.

Overheard a guy ask for a permit for a pod filter down at the pits the other week and the inspecter said you dont need one their not illegal. Must be a new WA thing because I know a guy stickered for one a while ago.

Atleast Zeds cant get caught out

I was having a good chat to an ex-cop not long ago and I was asking about pod filters (hes into the car scene), he said they are not illegal but have to be securely mounted.

But 1 thing is annoying though, I have a pod filter and its a noisy bastard (my exhaust is quiet but the intake makes a huge noise :( )

    all of the above..

    Noise, emissions, and flame arrester,

induction noise is one of the biggest dramas Builders like HSV and FPV have, making good HP and keeping it legal,

nothing like the sound of a pair of 48DCOE's on a 2.2lt L series... yumm.. Driving Dunkerton's old Group G 1600 in anger.. now thats induction noise.. (symphony)

aca done a thing on pods, showing how dangerous they are.

pods are legal, if they are boxed.

if unboxed they are a pototiential fire hazzard.

im pretty sure the reasoning behind it is the danger that they oppose, other wise why allow them if they are boxed off.

other then that not sure, could allways ring up qld transport, or rta, or vic roads... wherever u are.
