Whats it sound like when a turbo has gone ?

As in what does the engine/exhaust note sound like from that side of the motor if the turbos gone caput ?
not just oil seal , as in turbos come apart ...

Does it sound something like the turbos not connected to the exhaust anymore , as in heaps louder , kind of chugging noise from that side ?

 

Could be various outcomes methinks

 

It can sound like nothing, or it can sound like a tin of ball bearings in a clothes dryer or someone jamming a metal pipe in an industrial fan if it seizes. Should I continue? lol

 

I ask because today , I was driving , not particularly hard mind you , but under boost , when I heard a jingling noise like metal bouncing around in metal pipe .
I pulled over immediately , stopped the car , had a look around in the engine bay .
Start car again , ran well except for the passenger turbo side sounding like a loudish chugging noise from that exhaust area.
Because I was very close to home , I drove it back , stock boost gauge was showing dead zero . Normally is quite responsive .
The sound its making sounds like the egr pipe is disconnected , I have deleted it and blocked it off , but will a gone turbo sound like that ?

 

I'm going to pull the exhaust off tomorrow to have a look at the turbo also

 

You still make boost?

 

I babied it back home so as not to push it to hard not knowing what was wrong with it .
Car still pulled well , but I didn't get the rpms to high .
Silly me took the after market boost controller out a few days earlier , but the stock one showed nothing , when normally it would even babieng it .
I will know more tomorrow when I get under it and have a look .

I'm obviously in Bendigo.
I've got 2 worn but functional stock turbos removed, 1 of them dismantled. Plus 2 new stock CHRA's sitting on a shelf.

You're welcome to call in & inspect them if you think it would help you to assess the condition of yours.

If you do have a fuct turbo then you have some planning to do, happy to help you with this.

Thanks for the offer Mick , but I should be right for now , I'm up in Mildy by the way .
I think the turbo is ok , just the egr bolt blew out of the manifold causing the noises .
I'll grab a welder tomorrow and do it properly this time
