I see some of the newest super cars braking close to 100 ft from 60mph to zero. What was the stock 300zx's distance?
Here's the spec sheet for the z32. http://www.zshop.net.au/Z32tech.htm Here is reference. http://www.csgnetwork.com/stopdistinfo.html And here is the stopping distance calculator. http://www.csgnetwork.com/stopdistcalc.html Appart from that there are too many variables such as co-efficient of friction of the road surface. Tyre compound, mass of the car (fuel+driver), temperature at time of test. 2+2 or 2+0, ABS or non ABS. How long is a piece of string?
That didn't give the 60 to 0 braking distance for the 300zx. Better yet I have a 2+2 TT with ABS. What is the distance.
My best guess would be approx 120feet. A 2+2 TT is heavy and that is a lot of mass to pull up. Better still find a quiet piece of road and do a 60-0 test and tell us the results. don't forget the variables.
The whole 300zx is heavy comment is way over used. 1500-1600kg is not heavy by todays standards. A typical STi WRX, Evolution all way more than our zeds. So stock, 120 feet. With the brake upgrades available for the Zed, probably a feet less. I have the brake brace, SS lines, brake coolers and 6 pot front Brembos.
The Z was built in the era of performance cars that was least concerned with braking performance. Dont expect anything special in stock brakes.
Stock brakes are fine, as long as you only want to stop once. Suspension also greatly effects stopping distance. Tyres also obviously. Next question?
But in the era they belong to, they're heavy. This was when an Evo was 1300kg, and the very-comparable Supra was ~100kg lighter (depending heavily of course on specification) as well. And everything else from Japan was lighter, making the 300 the heaviest of the bunch. But you have a point about modern cars. Isn't the GT-R like 1900kg? Ridiculous! And yet it's just so fast...
If this is correct than it is more than comparable to the top of the range sports car today. So if you have upgraded them like me and have 6 pot larger fronts calipers etc, our Z's braking is just as good as a lambo or ferrari's?
Doing it once is one thing, repeating it multiple times is another. Braking once is more of what your tyres will take than your brakes performance.
Good point - as they mention after the braking test, there was noticeable brake fade around the track with the stock setup. A weekend warrior going through the twisties might have gone off the road because after an hour of thrashing it around, they braked while anticipating their brakes being able to handle the same limit...
A set of suitable high performance brake pads with stock zed brakes will be capable far in excess of all but possibly an elite few on this forum under all but Targa or race track conditions. E
Apart from the 2+0 slick tops (like I have) you can EASILY feel how light they are compared to 2+2 targa's. It's not all zeds, just the majority that are heavy
