What I thought was steering/suspension issues

So I'm driving to work yesterday morning and the car starts wandering about a bit in the back end, and I have to put about 20 degrees of left turn on the steering to keep it going straight.. very odd I says to myself, so I book it in to get it looked at, thinking it's HICAS or suspension related...

Well, I discovered the problem as I was driving home... I hear a big CLUNK from the rear left wheel as I go round a corner and the car starts wandering all over the road in the back end... pull over and have a look at the wheel.. hmm.. I don't think it should be sticking out like that... the wheel is shoved up into the guard and looks like it's got about 15 degrees neg camber on it and about the same amount of left turn  So I have a look under the car.. the lower suspension arm has sheared straight through where it meets the chassis towards the rear!

Thankfully I was driving very carefully just trying to get home on what felt like a very unstable car, if that had happened at any kind of speed who knows what would have happened. So it's now sitting at the mechanics looking very sorry for itself... :( Wish I 'd taken some pics...

    no idea

Just looked sheared straight through where the arm meets the chassis. Didn't notice any rust, but I wasn't under there for long, it was raining... I'll wait for the official diagnosis and let you know, but yeah, definitely worth checking everything out, I've never heard of it happening before though?

    Damn...

I wonder what caused that to break?

If it was the top arm, I could have given you one as I have spares. As you said, luckily it didn't happen at speed!

EDIT: You were right, it was a suspension issue
