ive pulled the dash to do a few things including fixing the lifted bit near the vents. What glue should and shouldn`t i use and where can i get some.i was thinking spray adhesive from spotlight(fabric shop)?
I would use something a bit more permanent..... the fabric spray adhesive might not stand up to the heat that the dash board cops. I think the spray you are referring to is only a glorified contact cement, which might be okay for material but vinyl gets a lot hotter. I would suggest one of the epoxies (not 5 minute araldite), one of the industrial strength epoxies would be a safe bet. You only want to do it once so it's better to use a professional glue rather than some of the "chewing gums" they try to pass off as glue. I seem to remember someone on the forum used Selleys "Knead it", it might be worth a shot if you can't find a decent glue style epoxy.
re; I would use something a bit more permanent interesting,i thought epoxy type glues may melt the foam underneath?if not then will use it for sure as its a lot stronger and lasts witht the heat
I used araldite not sure if it was 5 min or not. But its been a couple of years now and its been perfect. Just make sure you clamp it well.
USE SIKAFLEX 225 IB is correct, the best adhesive for this application is Sikaflex. You will need to scrape away the disintergrating foam residue (about a 20-25mm strip should be fine), before applying the glue, then use a few flat metal strips(or strong timber) to lay along the top edge of the vent opening, so that you have a smooth, even pressure along the full length of the repair when clamped down. Take the time to do it correctly and you won't have to do it again. It's a waste of time gluing it to the old foam underlay, as that will continue to degrade, and will simply let go again and again.
